I went to Peter Luger about 20 years ago with my folks. Even back then the servers were gruff. Someone at another table tried to order a well done steak, a manager came by and told them to go to McDonald's if they want that. Also back then I recall the bar not having seats at all, it was standing room only. The food was excellent though, I still think about it to this day.

@@travelfuller In a way I kind of agreed with the staff that time. I mean who goes to Peter Luger and orders well done steak. Also despite all of that I would still recommend Peter Luger to tourists and out of towners. It is a New York experience.

Thank you! It's so hard to decide and there are reasons to choose a bunch of them! Keens is probably our top pick instead of Peter Luger for a historic New York steakhouse, Gallaghers in Times Square is amazing for a modern upscale NYC steakhouse, Hawksmoor is probably our personal favorite but is the least "New York" of any of these and St. Anselm in Williamsburg is the best for a cheap laid back steak!

Your anecdote of the table behind you seems to be like the steakhouse itself. One table is not happy with the steak and gets treated like shit while another table is very happy with their steak...and gets treated like shit. That explains their odd new slogan: _Peter Lugar Steak House: Good luck!_

I love that luger won't change. There's a particular romance to actually taking out a few hundred dollar bills out of a bill fold to pay for something. To me Plastic is cold and lifeless . Just one mans opinion of course

The price for the tomatoes and onions is ridiculous. The service is equally disappointing. For the price of the steak, how was the flavor and seasoning? I hear if it's a good steak all you need is salt and pepper so I'm curious to know if that's the case on your experience?

We both felt like the sirloin was very good but not exceptional. Without the steak sauce it left a lot to be desired, but we were told by a few people that ordering it medium rare would have supposedly made all the difference. The filet was incredible, but unfortunately you get a small amount and the only way to get it is by ordering the porterhouse for two

It's actually not cash only. Peter Luger is actually like an exclusive club and a select few have the Peter Luger's card which allows those few people to sign for the meal with no cash or credit. Peter Luger has two locations, Brooklyn and Great Neck. I grew up in Great Neck. I was fortunate to have a very close friend whose father had a Peter Luger card and we would go pretty much every weekend. In fact, we had our own table. We went by ourselves and brought a couple of other friends from high school and went frequently enough that they reserved a table just for us. We never had to wait on a line. We would bypass celebrities occasionally, who on the weekends, when we would go, could be waiting over an hour for a table. It was quite an experience for a kid like me who grew up in a middle class household. You should have ordered the wedge salad not the tomatoes salad, it's more traditional and comes topped with their exclusive bacon which is the best in the world. You are correct that you ordered the steak at the wrong temperature. I prefer the rib steak even though that's not what they're known for. The rib steak naturally has more flavor. Even though the regular fries are excellent, you should have ordered the German fries, They are amazing. Finally, you should have gotten the Chocolate Mousse pie with extra schlagg. It's the best Chocolate Mousse pie in the world! The other issues are the charm of the restaurant. There's an argument to be made about them taking credit cards but why should they? They're not hurting for business and it's part of their charm. I have never heard anybody argue about the doneness of their steak. I have seen people send their steak back because they thought it was a little under but it wasn't an argument. I am shocked that a waiter would cop an attitude about that. It doesn't happen in the Great Neck location and the few times I have been to Brooklyn, I haven't seen it happen their either.

We have had a few people reach out about bad experiences with their waiter and the receptionist in particular, all at the Williamsburg location, but I do think we caught them on a particularly bad night. We are planning on trying Keens next, so it might be a while before we get back here but we would definitely like to go back and make a follow up video

I'm going to give you the reason places like Peter Lugers don't take CC's. For the amount most people are spending, if they did take CC's, most people would use them. And their lies the problem. I'm going to give you some easy numbers. Lets say they take in 10k for the night, all on CC's. That means they're paying the CC companies around 500 bucks. Now, that may not seem like allot compared to the 10k. But, they didn't make 10k. After all their expenses, they probably only made around 2K. Probably less. Now, take away 500 bucks. Over 25 percent of their profits go toward the CC companies. Oh, and those CC fees they pay aren't tax deductible. So it actually counts as profit. That's why so many places are moving toward the chargeback system, where the customer pays all the fees. But then you pay that 5 percent.

Yes, of course. But Peter Luger charges the same if not more than most of its competitors like Keens and Gallaghers who accept credit cards. Their business practices, such as charging extra for sharing, are greedy ways of hurting customers that none of the other steakhouses in the city do

It’s definitely overpriced because of their name and fame. But the steak is still amazing and one of the best around. I was just there and paid with debit card no problem. Waiter did it right at the table. Maybe it varies from server to server.

idk that debit thing issue seems to be more you than them. you already knew about their cash policy beforehand and even brought cash with you just in case, why even attempt with the debit card when the waiter was like "maybe". should've just taken it as a sign to go with cash. it's a terrible policy and their service sucks but to hold that against them seems unfair when you were aware of it. I'd be more on your side if you were unaware but you were so aware of it that you were nervous about it.
