‘Til this day, I still don’t get why people are so in love with Shenmue. I could understand if you were a gamer when it was being promoted as “the next big thing” and when it came out, all it’s original ideas. But now? The series has been surpassed in pretty much every way. Compare it to something like the original Zelda. It’s been copied and iterated on countless times. Does it still have an appeal to certain people? Sure but if you want a top down Zelda game, pretty much everyone will suggest Link the the Past or some other game made after 1987.

@@leeartlee915 I played it brand new and loved it, same with LTTP, played LOZ later. Tech moves on but the real classics hold up. Shnemue has a cheesy charm, all the 2d zeldas hold up as do all the classics from that 2d era, outrun from 1986 is still fun today. Some of the so called aaa next gen masterpieces feel like heavily scripted movies to me, I'll probably never play them again, I certainly won't be returning to play them in 30 years time.

I've been playing Jet Set Radio on Steam and I remember the first time I played I was super frustrated how it played but I loved the aesthetic and music so I still thought it was okay. Now I'm almost completing the achievement list and I appreciate so much more. If you have problems here's some help: - If you go full right or left on the analog stick you'll be launched to the selected direction and then you can redirect yourself in the air; - Stick to one character, it's make it easier to play, for instance, I really like to go with Mew, I'd recommend Garam if you want an easier time; - If you are doing a wall jump, see if the wall will change direction, if yes then you can wall jump again, that way you'll do a lot of points fast; - To do Jet Ranking I'd recommend seeing each stages grinding loop, basically almost every stage in the game has grinding spots that you can combo and maintain the 100 point combo (probably the worst grinding loop is in the first level of Benten) What made the story so good for me it's how much of a cartoon story it really is, think about it, chapter 1 is all about the world you play in divided by 3 cities, each city having 3 missions with their villains/gangs, and you can choose it like an episode like "hey, I wanna watch the race between the GGs and the Noise Tanks" then watch/play the 3 episode set of episodes in Benten-Cho. Chapter 2 is explaining that there is a company that wants to control the culture via a Demon Disc and Chapter 3 is seeing all the gang's work to defend their territory where they are free. The gameplay could be better? Yes, but this is still an early 3D game with different type of movement, if someone can forgive the movement in something like Mario 64 or the styles in SA1 and SA2, then I feel like a different movement like JSR should be at least understandable why, but still criticized for sure. The worst this game has is low content, which is why I respect the achievements so much, they made my 9 hours to 43 fast. The reason it works so well is that they push the game to it's limits while still being functional for new players, in my original 9 hours I got almost half of the achievements while not trying. Good review, you are the first youtubers that I liked from the youtube algorithm this year, it hasn't been that good to show new youtubers. Good luck on your work :-)

I've yet to play Jet Set Radio, though it's on my list of games to play. It went up a few marks when I learned that the character Jet from Lethal League Blaze was inspired by Jet Set Radio. When you go against her in classic mode, her music is AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE A FUNKY BEAT by Hideki Naganuma. I'm 100% sure SEGA could work with Team Reptile and make hell of a new entry that people would play, especially being available on the Switch for the Nintendo audience and maybe on Xbox Game Pass, which Lethal League Blaze is already on.

Just watched this video and didn't realize you're the one who made interview video with Marty James from Scapegoat Wax, that one was really good. Great video! Found you through Scribblenauts video. Yeah, JSR is clunky, it's all about mastering the controls. I don't think it was intentional, but nevertheless these tight controls made trade-off for how little content there actually are in JSR. I tried JSR just because of unique artstyle, and it made me dig into the game, no matter how hard controls are, i kept going just for cool soundtrack and artstyle. Then i played JSRF and it felt way too easy. JSRF definitely feels good to play, especially after the first game, but it never really brings any challenge. The hardest parts of the game are boss fights where you get knocked all the time, which gets very annoying but it's also easy to just not get knocked if you know how to play well. Honestly i wish i could replay JSRF like the first time, when you get lost everywhere, spend huge amount of time in the game, fall off buildings and get knocked out by bosses, but just like the first game, cool soundtrack and artstyle makes you wanna keep going. I never played a game that made me digging it just because of visuals and stuff. This franchise deserves more love, that's why i'm working on russian translation for JSRF, to bring new fans to franchise. This franchise is more than just "that one dreamcast classic" game, there's absolutely no other game that is like JSR.

Very good video. Play the original a lot just to vibe and have recently bit the bullet to just emulate Future. Super confused about why they avoided consoles after, I get sales are important to continue a series but desire from devs with pull (or lack thereof) are just as an important factor of deciding that I'm realizing. They should've taken the hints from all the inspired indie stuff and even attempts to pitch to an official new title, but I guess they just weren't about it until whatever needed to change did recently. Looking forward to the next game, personally hope it goes for the atmosphere and vibe of the first with a mix of the structure if it and future. The real answer of what killed it I will give here. It is a different answer to the one you are probably accustomed to, but it is the correct answer. The Matrix on DVD is what killed not only Dreamcast but as an extension many of the beloved franchises. The reason is simple. People rushed out to buy a PS2 at launch because it was by far the cheapest DVD player to hit the market at that time. The PS2 launch was very, very lackluster as far as games goes, with nothing resembling a killer app hitting the console until MGS2 later after the launch period. But The Matrix on DVD was a very hot item flying off the shelves and people needed a PS2 to experience it.

The hard truth no one wants to admit, not even myself, is that Jet Set Radio(Future) was a flawless period piece - and that is the thing about why it was as great it was. It's based on a street culture that is nowhere near as prominent now as it was during the time of development. That culture was niche then, and it's way more niche now. Jet Set Radio Future is on par with only one other game as my favourite of all time, and if this supposed reboot is real, I am honestly not hopeful that it will be a success. To develop a new game in the series that tops Future, it will take a loooootttt of investment and attention to detail of the 90s street culture in Japan it was initially based on - I find it extremely hard to believe that getting the right staff on board to make such a game today in the current gaming industry that will allow the title to thrive with appropriate funding will be an easy task. Though there's a whole lot of growth in the sports genre of games and such, so I hope it gets significantly more attention.

The main strategy around enemies is to hit the bigger pieces first so when the enemies roll in u can do the single spray tags while maneuvering around them, since you don't have to stop movement to do them. If you do this you'll see a pattern where the ammount of big pieces is juuust enough to trigger the enemies to spawn

JSR controls is really good but they do require a learning curve. It's similar to Sonic games where you're going to suck ass first time you play them, but the more you play them the easier and more "buttery" your gameplay becomes. I played the game on Android first and managed to master it by my 2nd playthrough so I think the controls are excellent, but it's dependent on how frequently you play video games and have a feel for physics in general.

It's nice to finally hear someone offer criticism for JSR's gameplay. JSRF's only real problem is the constant failure to tell you where the fuck you're supposed to go in the overworld and missions. But JSR is a game that has so much constant bullshit in a lot of levels that it actually had me questioning why I should continue playing a game that's design philosophy seemed to be pointless masochism. I've never been so conflicted with a game that has probably the greatest art/music direction of all time imo, but also some of the most flawed and infuriating gameplay. I view something like Katamari Damacy as an idea of how great JSR could have been if there was the same level of stellar art/music, but with gameplay that matched that standard. I really really hope the new game fixes the bullshit instead of trying to stay faithful in the wrong places.
