Kristen Davis, star of Sex and the City, has recently been criticized for her changed appearance, and has reported feeling self-conscious, anxious, and ashamed. Today, Dr. Karam is sharing why Kristen Davis' use of fillers as an anti-aging solution was a mistake, and what you should be doing instead. We're all under pressure to stay youthful, and this is especially so for actors and celebrities, whose careers are largely dependent upon their appearance. So often, the automatic response to aging changes is to get fillers or Botox to replace volume, which are oftentimes used in areas where volume hasn't been lost in the first place. The truth is, aging is a compilation of several things in addition to volume loss. With that in mind, it is easier to see why using fillers as an anti-aging solution will result in dissatisfaction. In the long-run, it is far more effective and budget-friendly to go and have a facelift done like Dr. Karam's Vertical Restore. When you opt for a facelift instead of continuing to get fillers, you will end up with a more natural, beautiful result.

I wish my mum had chosen that same path as yours. She had eye surgery, and it didn't go well at all. The dr botched her, she had revision surgery which prob made it worse, as it was done while she was still swollen. Makes me so sad to see her, and I know its ruined her life. She doesn't want to go anywhere. She told me once that when she's driving, and she looks in the rear view mirror, all she sees is a monster 😔 I just can't ever justify the risk? I told her not to do it. But she didn't listen and obviously I hate to see my mum like this, so I feel it's made a major impact on both our lives. Its hard to be happy, when someone you care about is depressed. I love your mindset. I wish you a long and healthy life

I’m 66. Never had Botox or fillers because 1) I don’t need Botox and 2) I understand that filling my cheeks with filler is not going to solve marionette lines unless I want to look swollen all over. I understand the only way to diminish marionette lines is through a face lift which I’m not going to do because then I’ll have to do my neck, then I’ll have to rub Retin A all over my body. I ask myself, For what? …….I just can’t come up with a good answer. So, I just take care of my skin so it looks healthy, soft and supple, get a great haircut and smile more.

Dr. Karam is spot on in his discussion about how women who are aging "badly" feel about themselves. I lost a lot of weight too quicky...due to an illness over 5 yrs ago. It ravaged my 56 yrs old face. Now, I am about to become 62...and look 72. I can empathize with actresses and actors and any celebrity caught up in the "race for the perfect face"...no matter their age. I also had HA Fillers injected into my gaunt face 5 yrs ago. They did not work. 1400 dollars later...my face remained gaunt. It has taken me 5 years to build up my weight and fix whatever I can afford to fix. Fillers are useless...and topicals are what I can afford. Celebrities have the $$$, and the need to look good on camera. I look terrible on camera. Worse than in person. Difference between us...is that they have the means to get a facelift, or any other expensive procedure required for them to "feel good about themselves"...and I don't. Heck...it is probably even TAX DEDUCTIBLE since their careers DEPEND ON LOOKING GOOD. Average Women do not usually have the same MEANS. So...we try to get by with fillers and topicals and laser treatments and all the rest of the medical interventions that are affordable enough for the AVERAGE woman to GET. Someday, if I hit the LOTTO...I can afford a facelift.Men can be in the same situation, sometimes...so I cannot skip them. However...their face issues are often much less severe than women's are. A man with a CRAGGY and WRINKLED FACE looks DISTINGUISHED to some. A woman with a CRAGGY and WRINKLED FACE...looks "rough" and ugly to many. Ain't that a bitch?

A lot of us think she looks fantastic "for her age", but that's the problem... When people use the term, "for your age", that isn't a compliment. She's working in an industry that is brutally honest about ageism. Ageism is a thing, and it isn't a good thing, and sometimes looking "good for your age" isn't what you want to hear. What you want to hear is; " WOW! You look fantastic!.. you haven't seemed to age in 20 years!" A great facelift done right does that.

@notfalling84 - I disagree. I believe getting a light lift in your early 40’s. Small increments save you in doing filler and Botox over time. I got my first mid lift @ 45 and now 57 yrs old - Ill get a forehead and sides done. 14 days was my turn around time in recovery. Remember - surgery becomes more risky as you get older. Take care of the luxury things younger, save the older yrs for serious health surgeries later.

Once a year or every 2 years at approx $2000/ per treatment. I love your videos but when you say “SAVE UP” I feel that’s a little unrealistic for MOST people. Just for fun I asked my Doc what a facelift would run and he quoted me $15,000. Well I got better things to do than pay for that. I have been saving for some time as I know it is costly to get into a reputable assisted living home. My friend bought into one for $300,000 and then it runs anywhere from 5k to 8K a month. So that is more important to me than doing anything to my face. Only if you have a great deal of money saved for retirement should anyone consider spending that on an appearance which does not even last a lifetime.

Finally a doctor just telling it like it is when it comes to filler! What's surprising is that these celebrities with so much money tend to take this same approach of over-filling. I'm sure they're quite busy with their work and they probably have a doc they've trusted, but it's scary to know that these things can remain in your face and build up as scar tissue. Excellent advice here on the best options. Also it is so true that you can do a lot to improve your skin at home with active ingredients. I've specifically had significant results with glycolic peels, which anyone can easily do at home. It just takes consistency + skin protection. And, I've had great results with TCA peels too (those are a bit riskier if done at home). One other option that may help slow down some of the laxity issues possibly if done before you have those issues, could be microneedling. I think more research is needed, but I've found great results from that so far with skin tone, texture, sunspots and some lines on my forehead.

I am so glad I found your channel. In May I finally tried botox and fillers for the first time since I was turning 62. Here it is August, and I can't leave my house! I found a very well reputable skin clinic in a metro area. Great reviews. I wanted to start small, but she wanted to go big, so I bought into the package she was selling. The next day I started having blisters and cysts all over my face. My eyes swelled shut, I had two places on my forehead that swelled the size of marbles. When they bust, I had clear liquid running down my face. I had yellow goop coming out of my eyelashes, my eyebrows and front hair follicles. She put me on a strong antibiotic. It didn't help at all. I have never had acne in my life. My face is still breaking out like crazy. My husband said I ruined my face! Today I am sitting here with 2 more hard red big hard places on both cheeks. They are hot and burning. I don't know what to do. The breakouts just keep coming. Why? Why is this happening to me? Will my face ever be normal again? I have not been in the sun in ten years. I wished so bad I would have never ever let someone put a needle in my face. This has been a nightmare on going. I am miserable. It is painful too. S>O>S!!!!!!????

I NEVER allowed fillers to touch my face! A little Botox is sufficient. I am 61 and had an upper eye lift and lipo under my chin and neck 3 years ago, and I constantly have people tell me I look 40. My plastic surgeon suggested a facelift, and I am so glad I insisted on having liposuction instead!!! There is zero trace of having anything done.

The results on your procedures are amaizing. Something I don't get is why these celebrities don't go to surgeons like you, or other I've seen with incredible results, I mean, they have the money.

I'm 54, thought I'd never bother getting a facelift...but now I'm determined to get a vertical restore if I ever lose the considerable weight gain of the last few years. I stopped getting botox in my early forties and don't even use skin products. Always had full lips and big eyes. Thought about threads .. but not interested anymore

Dr. Amir Karam is my favorite plastic surgeon on KZbin! He is so real/honest! Less is natural, better to look underdone than overdone - don’t expect to look like you’re in your 30s again - I love his messages and advice.

I agree that she looks pretty good. People are just very cruel (not talking about this vid, but those attacking her for it). However i think she has the means to have a much better job done for her, one that minimises facial puffiness.

Thank you, Dr. Karam! I'm 47 and have been planning out my skin journey since I was a teenager. At 47, my skin looks amazing but I have recently gone down the exact path that you've described. I'm not ready for a lift, so I've done filler twice and Botox annually now. I'm going to stop doing the filler, keep doing Botox, and see where my skin ends up. It's hard when you're in that "holding pattern". I'll wait until I'm around 50 and reassess the need for a lift. Thank you so much for the warning. All I ever wanted to look like is the best version of myself.

I wish, most of us, all due respect Dr Karam cannot afford your $75,000 plus surgery plus hotel, food and airfare. At some point we have to accept the aging process. We are too hyper focused on remaining young.

Well, holy cow, Dr. Karam …… now THAT’S a ton of helpful information for people as we age. Though I’ve been asked if I’ve had any “work” done, I am more than relieved to answer “NO”!!! It scares me to death the thought of having needles stuck in my face!!! Though I might have a trick or two, I’m content to watching videos that help here and there using makeup. Thanks, Dr. Karam. You have a new subscriber!!!!!

I wouldn't want needles either stuck in my face. Tried it years ago and everybody could hear me screaming. Too painful. Only needles I am comfortable with is accupuncure but thay is not in your face.

Very interesting. I am 42 and never put anything in my face (yet) not Botox and not fillers. We shall see how long i can delay adding stuff like that or anything else. My mom died at 64 and and had the most beautiful age appropriate face and she never did anything. Not sure why aging had become so feared today. Sad.

Hi doctor, do you have any before/afters of your patients who have done your microneedling combined with the vampire facial (I believe) that you’ve mentioned before? Also, what do you think about sculptra if we currently don’t have the funds for facial fat grafting? Or does sculptra fall under the filler category for you?

Women don’t use lasers enough or good skincare. They drink a ton and lean on fillers and Botox way too much early on. I got C02 in my 20s and it definitely slowed down aging
