I met Big L in 1998 during the Parade weekend in Harlem. I came up from Baltimore with a former friend that used to live on 140 th before he moved to Baltimore. It was around 3 in the morning and he was standing right in between 139&140th. We walked up to him and he dapped my former homie up and then I dapped him up. I was young then and a little star struck. I noticed he was very tensed and his eyes were still looking around and he was talking. The next day on Sunday we ran into him again and he gave us a pack a flyer’s to give around promoting the Big picture album. His vibe at the parade was chill but still staying on point. I went back to Baltimore like damn I just met one of my favorite rappers out. This was in September 98 and he died that February in 99.

These types of stories need to be included in a documentary. There's so little thats publicly known about BIg L outside of rap but I think its because up until a few years ago bodies were still dropping around his murder. His rhyming ability was biblical but he had a lot of beef and I used to hear back in college when he was alive that he was a foul dude to a lot of people in the street.

I don't think that Big L was murdered accidentally because of a mistaken identity (his brother). He was trying to make it big rapping, but he was actually involved in some street stuff. His brother (Big Lee) was part of a crew (NFL Crew) that would setup and rob drug dealers. That includes drug dealers that Big L knew, and he would let the crew know their location. Big L's brother went to prison, but before that he had beef with the guy who eventually killed Big L. He was a childhood friend of Big L's. His brother hired someone in prison to kill the guy once he got out. The word is Big L went to help. It didn't go as planned and the guy ended up finding out who was behind it, including that Big L was one of the guys that tried to kill him. Shortly after that is when the guy killed Big L shooting him 9 times. Big L's brother tried to get revenge years later when he got out of prison. Apparently he found out that someone was helping to hide the guy who killed his brother. He threatened to kill the guy and the guy ended up killing him. Big L's killer got locked up around that time for something else. He got out of jail in 2015 and moved back to that same area where Big L was killed. Then he was killed in 2016. Word is that it was Big L/Big Lee's people, but I don't know how official that is. It didn't stop there though. In 2019, Big Lee's son (Big L's nephew) was killed as retaliation. Cameron was in a crew (Children Of The Corn) with Big L, and they were good friends in the 90's. Cam went to the funeral of Big L's killer because he knew him as well. He actually spit a freestyle shortly after because people were calling him out asking why he would go to the funeral of the guy that murdered his friend Big L. In the freestyle Cam says how a week before Big L was killed, he tried to setup and kill that same guy. There's a lot to it. Most people think that it was a case of mistaken identity, but that's not the case.

While Blaze produced some of X's epic street anthems, Grease produced some of the darkest bangers for DMX like Stop Bein' Greedy. Let Me Fly and For My Dogs, that whole album was hot, dark and deadly like hell's tarpits. Him and P.K. put their souls in that record. Never have I heard atmospheric production that swallows you whole like that, before or since. EDIT: Man did Trina Moe and School Street for Christ' Sakes. That heavyweight shit would lift you off the ground when you turn it up. That "The Great Depression" cassette tape is one of my prized possessions still. My favorite X album.

@Dewayne Junior I had one specific song in mind (I'ma Bang) to help illustrate my point and differentiate the contrast between the anthems and the dark shit. Feel like he about to jump up and crip walk the way he keep saying Mayne. Went straight west coast on us. Sad that most of this interview has been confusing as fuck, but respect to him for making some of the best beats during his run.
