I agree with you that this wars more or less a pointless discussion. Re taking Kiev, that could mean different things to diferent people. He was certainly a couple of miles away from Kiev but what he wanted, as I understand it was, to quash the current administration of Ukraine - Zelensky - intsall a puppet government that would slowly but ultimately suppress all free MEDIA, neuter JUDICIAL independence, destroy or drastically CIVIL SOCIETY and suppressed all Political Opposition same as he did in Russia so that he remains supreme untill he dies. Remember that if Putin were to lose control of the Media, The Judiciary, Civil Societies, and Opposition leaders and not to be able to somehow get rid of their leaders; what he did to Magnitsky and why he died (since everything is documented) would be enough to jail him for life. And now the illicit invasion of Ukaine - the invasion point alone - which no one supports including China, India and all; and the atrocities that obviously followed since today we can all see Huge Ukrainian cities completely burned and wiped out for ourselves on TV; that was a huge mistake which has placed him in real tangible dire straits. And unfortunately he cannot turn back time.

The war in Ukraine is a polarizing issue in the states. One side doesn’t want to be involved while the other wants a repeat of Iraq and Afghanistan. The us could barely keep Afghanistan together. Ukraine is not even winning, its just that the Russians are not advancing as they have reserved troops in case NATO joins the war. Ukraine is stuck in a quagmire. With millions fleeing the country as refugees and young men dying in battle, the future of the country looks bleak. The only way out is a peace deal.
