What makes Alien: Covenant so bad?

Alien and Alien: Covenant share a lot of similarities, but why is Covenant so bad in comparison?

The biggest insult was killing Elizabeth Shaw off screen and killing off the engineers. The ending of Prometheus had people hyped. We wanted to see David and Shaw’s journey to the Engineer homeworld. We wanted to see Shaw confront her creators and ask the ultimate question. She was already a well established hero. We didn’t need another one… they did her character so dirty. And poor Noomi Rapace. I remember she was on a podcast. I forgot which one I was listening to it on my commute to work. she said she was suppose to have a bigger role in Covenant. And “decisions were made” to change the script which pretty much cut her out of the entire movie. The only time we get to see her is in the prologue of Covenant called The Crossing which premiered on KZbin. The Crossing was way more interesting than the movie itself imo

Thanks, this clarifies my feelings a bit. My basic theory is that Ridley Scott wanted to tell a completely different story but could only get funding if he included the references to the Alien franchise. I suppose I should blame my spoiling by Cameron in Aliens, but I like the idea of the creatures involved in the original movies just being what they are called, alien. Not gene-engineered, just freakishly deadly creatures that our crew had the misfortune to run into. The actress who played Shaw was the highlight of Prometheus, and I am so sorry they treated her character that way in the sequel. Both of Scotts newer movies had the budgets and the effects, but just no heart or story. My 2 cents on the subject.

great video. i think the biggest issue is fan expectation tbh. i think in prometheus, the director just wanted to explore another corner of a universe he created with some world building and fans wanted more of the first thing. with covenant he mixes two different ideas and fans of both ig were like who is this for.. me personally, a well shot, interesting scifi horror movie with characters to root for or think about is a win. i love horror movies and i just appreciate the fact he was willing to do something he thought was interesting because the fans didn’t like it but they sure love avatar and how interesting is that universe?

They made alot of stupid choices in covenant. No protective gear,the cowboy diude trying to fly the whole ship into orbit and thru a serious storm,poking at plant life they no nothing about,leaning over a giant egg thats clearly got something moving inside it to name but a few.In the 1st one they did daft stuff too,like them 2 that somehow managed to get lost and then decided to try and pet a pretty deadly looking snake type lifeform on a alien planet for example.

covenant makes me wish they made covenant a movie fully about david 8 after the events of Prometheus, but feels like they made a cake with 50% icing and 50% base, where neither aspect can be enjoyed properly without some effort to scrape off globs of icing to eat the cake. something potentially good ruined with a careless tossing of ingredients.

I think covenant was pretty sick and I actually liked the new ones more than the classics but some fans just get into the story to much

It was a badly-made and badly-acted film, but the real problem was Scott's story, the way he brought it all back to humanity, made it all about us, instead of developing the Xenomorphs and space jockey as races in their own right. It shows a lack of imagination and frankly a lack of ability in Scott's writing. Poor writing/vision harmed the third and fourth films of the original quadrilogy as well but at least they were decent action films.

i really wanted to like to alien: covenant. but yeah they were really stupid characters and the spores infecting them without knowing was such lazy writing, also the 2nd section of the movie got pretty stale

Covenant is an amazing movie ESPECIALLY when compared to movies that are coming out nowadays. There are thousands of ridiculous movies out there and you chose to nitpick at a movie that stands out among most movies that came out in the last 10 years. Interesting choice.

Also, alien covernant characters don't exist in real life. They're as superficial as 2nd rate Hollywood wanna-be actors looking for a job. It shows in the acting and in the dialogue. (the pc police by gay women was on set to make sure all conversation and relationship is pc wholesome) No one acts like that but in Alien the original movie, you can tell. all the people are very original.
