In the ring the he carried this aggression that made it look legit and it worked. Kurt’s one of the few guys who are acceptable as a face or heel. That shows how great he truly is.

I was born in 2000, and I started watching wrestling around 2003-2004 because of my grandad. Kurt Angle became an instant favorite of mine. I didn't know why everyone chanted "You suck" at the time, but I joined in because it was hilarious as a child and it still is. His time in TNA was really enjoyable as well. Whether he was the wrestling machine(my favorite version of him), being a chicken shit heel, or a an American hero babyface, Kurt Angle was putting on classic matches and cutting great promos consistently. If anyone reading this has a favorite or few Kurt Angle matches, I would love to hear them as well.

He isn't the G.O.A.T.. But he is my personal favorite and THE most well rounded performer of all time, hands down. His character work, his ability to be a snake like heel or cowardly heel or asinine heel lacking any self awareness, an ultra aggressive face, a dominant face, a funny face. His in ring technique, his catch-as-catch-can wrestling, his brawling, his mat skills, his ability to work with literally any other performer, and even some highflying moves. His absurdly quick pickup and advancement of his professional wrestling skills and fundamentals. His MASSIVE body of work across multiple promotions. His ability to draw out great performances from average or even mediocre performers. His mic work, although not all time great, is great and gets heat. He excelled at very single skill in wrestling, and many of those skills his legitimately one of the greatest ever. Name a single performer as well rounded as him, who's as top level as him in as many categories, and who has the multi-decade catalogue that he has. I'll be waiting.

Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar are indisputably the two greatest athletes in professional wrestling history and the two most skilled technical wrestlers ever, even if Brock Lesnar is frequently unmotivated these days. Their feud was absolutely amazing, and had the greatest legitimate athletic competitions ever. It is still mindboggling that Brock Lesnar stood up and carried on their Wrestlemania match after landing on his head, and his almost inarguably the only professional wrestler who could have done that, especially of wrestlers his size. Any other 250lb+ human landing on their neck from 15 feet in the air, with that momentum, after already going through what he did in the rest of the match leading up to it, would have likely died, at best broke their neck, fractured their skull, and been in ICU in a coma. Brock Lesnar got a concussion and finished his match. That is so inhumanely strong and just all out tough that it is terrifying. Their feud was so top level, and is a perfect showcase of why Smackdown was FAR above Raw in quality. Kurt's Wrestlemania match with Shawn Michael's is possibly my favorite match ever, especially knowing that it was done entirely on the fly, without planning, without them ever working together before, and without them even chatting before the match to lay out their game plan. It's absolutely unfathomable that ANYONE could pull of one of the absolute greatest matches of all time in a situation like that, and proves exactly why they're indisputably two of the absolute greatest of all time.

I was at Summerslam 2001, and can confirm that everyone there was 100% behind Angle and most of us were convinced he was going to win that night. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt a crowd deflate faster than that one did when the DQ happened (I was also at HIAC 2019... I’d say that crowd exploded, rather than deflated). I’ve really enjoyed the first two episodes of this series!

Having Angle debut as a condescending, straight-laced heel who thinks he's a face was a stroke of genius. WWE really understood their audience and the cultural zeitgest at the time and knew that his character would draw mega heat from the crowd. And Kurt knew how to work the crowd in that way almost instinctively. Dude was a natural at ring psychology, in addition to his obvious athletic talents.
