The only reason people dont inherrantly do wicked things is because established culture intervenes almost automatically before they are capable. I have seen a lot of comments that don't seem to understand what the story is supposed to be. This movie is based on a very long running Broadway which was based on a series of well written and very dark books (though thankfully the musical isn't as dark). The story isn't showing sympathy for a villain, but showing that there are complex nuances in society and how easy it is to villianize somebody who is doing the right thing. The whole "is somebody born wicked or is wicked thrusted upon them" is about how people treat others who are different, whether it is physical or ideological. Also it is about the importance to speak and act on the truth even if there is backlash. I saw the movie and I was honestly very skeptical about it because of my love of the musical, but I am happy that I was pleasantly surprised that it was a refreshingly good movie. There was pops of colors, good character development, and they stayed true to the heart of the musical. So I do suggest giving it a shot (unless musicals aren't your thing).

There was also a massive political narrative. The original Wizard of Oz was deeply esoteric and archetypal in nature. The Wicked story is an inversion of this. With Dorothy portraying the goddess/Persephone aspect, Oz being her subconscious mind/the underworld, the Wizard being her inner Christ Consciousness, the wicked witch and the good witch being the dualistic nature of the Sophia, the emerald city being the heart, the yellow brick road being the central channel up which the kundalini rises, and the characters in Oz, being unhealed aspects of her that get healed within the heart. There’s probably more to it than this, but you get the gist. To invert this is, quite literally, satanic/Ahrimanic.

I have loved Wicked since I first heard Defying Gravity in 2004. Then... I fell in love with the story. And I feel a lot of people are missing the brilliance of it. Wicked is about courage. It's about standing up to authority and speaking truth to power and standing up for what's right, even if that means you're on your own. It's about the power of propaganda and state character assassination. Who is good? Who is evil? It all depends on our level of courage and who we decide to listen to. And lastly, it's about female friendship. The musical will always be my first love and my favorite cause.. live is always better. That said, the movie was amazing.

The clothing I was told he was getting rid of equaled almost the same amount we brought with us, and everything looked like it had only been worn once or maybe twice and never touched again.

In the books, they used the word "Wicked" as a descriptor because it sounds as harsh as describing someone as "Hitler". The whole premise is about how pointing fingers and hyperbolizing someone's otherness is a reflection of the ones pointing. I think this movie both sides of the political extremes need to hear. Someone else may have mentioned (I can’t be bothered reading over 400 comments!) that “The Wizard of Oz” wasn’t the first colour film. Off the top of my head, I can think of “A Star is Born” from 2 years earlier, which was made in Technicolour, but there were also colour films made by hand-painting each frame, going back to the silent period. “The Wizard of Oz”, with its switch from black and white to colour, was revolutionary, which is why many think it’s the first colour film.

In spite of the fact that the biggest money making films are rated G, Hollywood will continue to put most of it's production money into the darkest and most violent films for public consumption and influence. The movie doesn't appear as terrible as the book though.

Elphaba does horrible things and it's not presented as her being awesome, so I don't know what people are talking about when they say it's a portrayal of the villian being the victim or being good. The overall message is that we are all flawed and our choices determine our destiny. Elphaba is no hero, and anyone who comes to that conclusion is missing the plot.

But until we come up with some original stuff they’ll just continue to butcher everything that came before it, sadly.

Oh the book is waaaay darker and NOTHING like the musical 🤣 I watched a documentary where the author of Wicked Gregory Maguire talked about why he let Stephen Schwartz (the original writer of Wicked for Broadway) have the rights to use his original source material to write his musical… even though he had people knocking on his door back then to try to make it into a movie and knew he would make more money to adapt it to film. It was very interesting. But Maguire had a meeting with Schwartz and fell in love with music he had already written and even gave his blessing to let Schwartz change the plot points of his original story.

This musical has been around for 20+ years and the political and social themes have ALWAYS been relevant. What you see people arguing about right now is interpretation in regards to how the political allegory makes “their side” the protagonists or antagonists as it relates to the modern political/social world… but as I said, this musical was never written with today’s world in mind. So guess what it doesn’t have to be controversial 🙄 I for one just wish people would shut up and just enjoy it (or not, if they don’t like musicals).
