It's easy to think that things like algebra, chemistry, etc are pointless if you never do anything intellectually challenging in your life, but the value of learning those kinds of subjects in school is to get your foot in the door for if you want to go further into those fields or something related later on. You can't claim those things are pointless when almost every facet of your life relies on other people being able to understand them. The value of math and science is that it extrapolates a vast amount of factual implications from what on the surface appears to be a small amount of isolated information that would often be useless on its own. There are plenty of possible applications of those things even in every day life, it's just that all people are content with varying degrees of ignorance and most forgo any of those applications because they are comfortable enough with how their life is, similar to how you can get through life without being strong enough to do a single pushup, but that doesn't mean that physical strength is not a useful trait to have. Similarly, people can hold blatantly unrealistic beliefs or worldviews (religion, astrology, etc) while still being able to meet the criteria of being a functioning member of society.
@KUblaikong
@KUblaikong 2 ай бұрын
yes and even though a subject might not be applicable later in life, studying that subject still Grows the brain and helps train you to think critically. They would understand this if they actually learned the material instead of cheating. The problem with the American school system is not that they teach a bunch of useless shit, the problem is that slackers like them are allowed to drift through until graduation and end up as ignorant adults who act like speed bumps on the road to societal advancement.
@bunklypeppz
@bunklypeppz 2 ай бұрын
@@KUblaikong Yeah, a lot of subjects are worth learning for the sake of improving your ability to think and improving at the learning process itself. The idea that it's smart to cheat your way through school is like believing it's smart to cheat on physical exercises because it is easier to do them improperly without actually working the muscles. It's not smart; it's just short-sighted and it reinforces the kind of mindset and behaviors that cause most people to plateau and eventually degrade. The belief that most people shouldn't bother learning academic subjects because they don't expect to "use" what they learn as an adult is how something like the plot of the movie "Idiocracy" could become a reality.
@GTlFit
@GTlFit 2 ай бұрын
So glad someone with a brain actually exists in this comment section. How tf is someone supposed to discover what subjects strike their career interests if they don’t dabble in it in school. Probably a 0% chance I’d be a chemist without being forced to take chemistry in high school.

I don't even live or study in America, but I completely agree with the discussion of education and school. And I think the system has similar problems all over the world. All I learned at school is to memorize the material for a couple of days or weeks, in order to put the correct check marks in the test and forget the material forever. And after 13 years, I couldn't even write a sentence in English. Later I just began to watch interesting topics on KZbin and internet in general and learned English in less than 3 years just watching what I like, and ended up learning more than my friends who have more than 15 years of education with mandatory English. Now I literally translate games or information for my friends who have more years education(with mandatory English), so we can play together even if a game doesn't have translation to our language. Nowadays I have the opposite problem, because I realized that 90% of people in my country "learn" English the same way but don't find their interest in it later and now I have literally 0 people to talk about any part of English side of KZbin or internet in general. And I have a similar story with other subjects too.😅

Regarding the public school system: it's not that they're teaching kids stuff they don't need to know. It's that most of the kids don't need to know most of the material after middle/high school, but the ones that do are the ones who civilization depends on. Like, 99 kids out of 100 don't need to know Trigonometry, but the one who does is designing bridges and buildings where hundreds of people will absolutely die if they don't learn it. In some parts of Europe, they solved this problem by having kids choose their targeted careers in middle school. Then, they only take the classes in high school that are relevant to their targeted field. This means the typical EU high school graduate is smarter than the typical American college graduate, but less "well rounded" (because for some reason, we Mericans' consider that important, even though there are basically zero well-rounded adults anyway. Everyone is good at something and bad at most things and only interested in a couple of things. No human adult is a true generalist.) Of course, the other, more cynical reason is funding. In the EU, school funding is based on need. Here, it's based on performance on standardized tests - which locks most schools into a downward spiral where every year they get less funding than the year before until eventually they're closed down when the paint starts peeling off the walls, because they literally couldn't afford both paint and textbooks. Anyhow tl;dr yes it's a mess but it wouldn't be hard to fix. Fund schools based on need, not performance, and career-test the kids in middle school. Give those two things a decade and you'll see drastic improvement.

a good tip for kids in school, most primarily high schoolers. Learn Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. These are basic functions you need, it's as Asmon says, you will be finessed to taken advantage of. Learn what bills are, maybe pay for your own phone bill? That's a good first time bill. Then learn what's a common bill people pay for in general. Learn what credit is and make it grow. I don't care what anybody says about how bad credit is, especially Asmon. YOU NEED CREDIT in the United States. You need it practically for everything if you plan to live on your own or with a partner, you'll need Credit. Some of you might say "this is dumb we all know this" you'd probably shit yourself from the amount of people that dont know any of these basic things. Edit: Oh yea, learning to Read is probably big lmao.

One of the reasons they teach subjects which seem like the kids are never going to use is because they want kids to practice critical thinking skills. You show different subjects to kids so that they have to use different types of thinking skills. You might feel like you will never use geometry, but practicing it gives you better spatial sense skills which translates into things you actually will do in life.

On the school system part. I disagree. By removing the sciences and maths from the school curriculum, you basically deny kids their chances at succeding in science fields. @Kolvarg
@Kolvarg Ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with the US education system so I can't discuss specifics, but I think the biggest problem with modern education is not at all that they are teaching kids "things they don't need to know", because you can't really avoid that. Yea if you're a streamer you probably don't need to know a lot about chemistry or physics. If you are a scientist, that's not so true, is it? It makes sense to prepare kids to be able to do whatever they might want to, and to actually expose them to those things so they can even know if they like them or not. More importantly, learning those things help develop logic, reasoning and other analytic skills that will remain with you even after you forget a lot of the specifics. I think the bigger problem is 1) the teaching metods haven't kept up with the quick techonological advancements of the last few decades, 2) a lot of teachers aren't properly compensated, have the resources or the knowledge and will to make their classes enjoyable, and perhaps most importantly 3) the grading systems often value memorization over understanding.

How has tech been talking about the gym for so long but look the exact same lol
@TheSeth256

Because contrary to what he says you don't get a great physique just from going to the gym for 3 months. It takes years of regular workouts unless you have some insane help like movie stars do.

i went and got bloodwork done and its not true that the average test levels for 18 is 1100, thats just the peak range, the real normal range would be 300-1100 . for a male over 30 it would be around 200-800

A far better idea for the shorts strategy is to have your editors make a shorts dedicated channel, not on the main channel.

People who don't like tectone, don't dislike him due to him just existing... it's that he's got an audience of kids who love to hear his naughty words and watch the big baby have tantrums and victimize himself cuz its the new cool.

Do audio books count as "reading" the book? Because I've burned through so many books while at work. I didn't technically read it but I also didn't just use spark notes for the synopsis.
