Why they have to? Is being Asian your excuse or the only ID? Not everyone got to stuck up on Lefty concept in Diversity Salads mixed with ketchup and mayo when all they can identify is JUST SALADS..No ketchup!! Will you eat anything even when you got choked off so you wont get called as racist? The way you view Christian as Religion ONLY is already striking different. Christian is similar to Asian as ID. Wei Du said she only recently saw Asian hate in Britain. But the fact is, Asian racism (and racism, in general) has always been in British society for generations. If Wei Du didn't witness it before, that's because it was lurking beneath the surface, waiting for a trigger. That trigger was COVID-19. Another possible trigger is China's frightening rise as an economic world power.

I am half Chinese. I experienced racism ALL the time when I lived in the UK from the 1970s until 1997, when I moved to work in the Far East. This involved verbal abuse, idiots trying to pick fights and throwing stones and snowballs packed with jagged ice, being chased through streets at night by thugs yelling racist insults etc. Most of the perpetrators were white men, but I’ve also faced racist abuse from black people and South Asians. So have many of my Chinese and Japanese friends. East Asians have suffered violent racist abuse long before the pandemic.

Same here in Australia. For my experience as an Asian student, I’ve been facing racism too since the rise of Covid. I’m from Kyrgyzstan but people think I’m Chinese just because of my mongoloid look. People think Covid comes from Asian people in general. For my experience, I’ve never been attacked but instead I’ve been pushed and yelled at mostly about Covid and China’s problems in their country and sometimes they would bump my shoulder real hard with a strong force sometimes on a train and a street. Of course, I wasn’t a coward. I just didn’t want to have a problem with them and continued ignoring them. For my friends who are Vietnamese, Malaysian and Filipino, a couple weeks ago a group of teenagers threw a battle of water at their heads telling them to go back to their countries and complaining about China’s problems that have nothing to do with them. My friends didn’t want to waste their time fighting back and explaining to them so they left. I can’t believe ignorant people still exist in a first world country.

Let's see:- we've lost all our manufacturing because China offered labour and production costs that we just couldn't compete with. They are ravaging the oceans of marine life vital to nearby poorer nations. They allowed their citizens to travel abroad AFTER knowing Covid was beginning to spread. When our government called for an investigation into the origins, the CCP reacted like a child. They have invaded Tibet and want to invade Taiwan. They own real estate, ports, farms and critical infrastructure in Australia against the wishes of the locals. Granted, it's primarily the fault of our useless leaders. But with all these dynamics occurring simultaneously, I just can't imagine why some of us are 'waysist'. China tells us not to interfear in it's internal affairs..........as it has spies and students stealing technology from under our noses. Most people in the West are reasonable and decent people. But when things happen around us that we don't like, we have a right to question it, and be angry about it without being falsely labeled.

I've been in the UK throughout the pandemic. Fortunately, I haven't experienced racism here myself though I cannot say the same on behalf of my ESEA friends... one was called f***ing Chinese by a random, racist passer-by, another was turned away rudely at a fast-food counter because apparently she "had Covid" because she "looked Chinese" - my poor friend was so shaken by that experience, especially because she was new to the UK... Whenever I am outdoors now, there is still fear of encountering racism and being unable to respond to any such macro/microaggressions. I also feel as if I am being made more aware of how different I am for being of Asian descent. That being said, I have met a lot of lovely, diverse people here in the UK - racism exists everywhere, including in my home country... we need to encourage people to speak up about racist encounters, validate their feelings & give them support (but also be careful not to pin every issue on racism) - thanks for this video!

To be honest, this doesn't strike me as surprising at all. I've always felt that there's a large amount of racism towards Chinese/Japanese/Korean i.e. East Asian people in the UK. If you were to have lived in the UK in the past 10 years, pretty much anywhere outside of London (where you'd have the option of never seeing a non-Asian person), you'd definitely have experienced some form of racism. Interestingly, I don't see it come from the older generation since most of them are far too polite to open their mouths and say something idiotic like that but the younger generation of Brits I feel to be disrespectful, angry and basically disenfranchised. I don't know if its all pervasive or only in the areas where I happened to be, which, admitedly, were mostly working class to maybe middle class places. (Do note that when I refer to Chinese I just use that as a blanket word to include Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean and other related but distinct cultures. This is not a comment on race or whatever, it's just easier than having to type out Korean/Japanese/Chinese. I would use the word 'Asian' but 'Asian' in the UK refers mostly to our South Asian brothers of mostly Indian descent. Note 2: I'm using the word "English" because my experience is in England. ) If you were to ask me to speculate on why this is the case, I'd wager that this is because of a few reasons. Chiefly being what is mentioned by one of the ladies here in this video in that whereas other minorities have reached a critical threshold where English have to pay attention to them just due to their numbers, the Chinese have not reached that level yet, population wise. Secondly, culturally, there is the Chinese belief of the iron rice bowl which is to say that they'll tolerate all sorts of abuse and all sorts of attacks so long as it doesn't affect the bottom line of their survival i.e. their livelihood. Lastly, there is a cultural divide. Like the Jews in Europe, the Chinese tend to stick to themselves and keep their heads down low so that they "won't be seen as making trouble." It's related to the second reason that I mentioned but also has the effect of them becoming very successful in businesses etc. That and the fact that there is a huge emphasis on education in Chinese culture also helps ensure their success. The point is that Chinese people do not have a voice and do not have the political power nor push to ensure real change. Lastly, due to the above reasons, there still is not very much contact between the Chinese populace and the English populace. You'd be surprised by how many Brits don't know simple things such as when Chinese New Year is or even what Diwali is about. The latter being extremely shocking considering that Leicester has the biggest Diwali celebration outside of India and that maybe 8% of the population is South Asian. When there is little contact between the communities and between the people, there is a lot of mistrust which can turn into something more dangerous over the years. I would have hoped that in the decade that I've left the country, things would have gotten better but it really seems like they're instead regressing. Hopefully it doesn't regress further and give into far right nationalism because that's the first step down a very very slippery slope.

I don't agree with this behavior, and I feel bad that this young man was hurt. I am from nyc in the US and have had good Asian friends (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) most of my life. My wife is half Filipino. I understand that my life experience may be different from others. I believe that the CCP is ultimately responsible for the negative sentiment toward Chinese people. I've known two westerners who were assaulted in China, apparently for being American. The difference is that very harsh, anti-American statements are made by the CCP through state run media outlets regularly, which are on a totally different level than what is said in the US. Until the CCP falls, both sides will continue to harbor suspicion and antagonism towards the other.

As a travel blogger, I would always give fair warning and recommend my followers to visit countries other than North America or Europe. The issue with COVID and hate crimes will not dissipate. If I were Asian British, I would consider relocating to another country. Several African Americans took the significant step of resettling in Ghana when the country opened its door. They are happier and don't have to deal with the constant fear of being harassed by Caucasian officials.

@@cholesterol804 And which East Asian and South East Asian countries have such prevalent problem? It's one of the safest region in the world for tourism. Millions of foreigners from countries all over the world come to the region every year. East Asia has one of the world lowest crimes rate, violence is a rare sight in public, almost non existent let alone hate crimes or racist attacks against foreigners. People can walk the public street late at night without fear of hate crimes, assault, harassment unlike in the West. Even in so called 'civilized' European cities, like London, Milan, Madrid, Paris... there's currently a public pickpocketing, mugging and assault pandemic against tourists. Look it up. Thanks for highlighting this problem. The point is well made that one way forward is to raise awareness of this, educating more people about this. I entirely agree with the comments of the Oxford Dean of Law about unconscious racism, as that can be related, in that wider awareness might generate better support amongst more folks in our communities. For instance, in the past few years, someone who knew me, or at least I thought they did, challenged me as to whether there was a reason for me experiencing racism, and suggested that I may have done things inadvertently perhaps to trigger that, adding a question as to whether any of my relatives in this country had suffered the same. I informed this individual that I was not alone, that family members had suffered racist abuse, not just me, and, no, I had most certainly not done anything to trigger such behaviour. The individual who had asked me those questions seemed surprised. I was taken aback at the apparent lack of awareness and insensitivity about the occurrence of racist behaviour towards those of East Asian origin. I would add that sadly, I have particularly experienced racially abusive behaviour since Covid-19 arose, a number of times, in one instance being called Coronavirus, in another episode being spat upon, in yet another instance having money demanded from me to compensate one abuser for the “trouble” my kind were causing (naturally, I refused and he backed off when I threatened to report him for an offence), and in another instance I was shouted at and elbowed aside in a supermarket, whilst in a separate shopping incident I was called a nutter who caused all this by someone who insisted on still standing very close to me whilst she wasn’t wearing a mask after I asked politely that she observe social distancing when queuing (at the time, we were still in the midst of lockdown).

I'd never gotten along well there myself, but I knew that if anyone could do it, she could--and she did! For some weird reason, they loved her. She was 13. When she was 14 and a freshman her teacher sent her to some big science fair their school had never had a hope of even winning a booby prize. She won first prize, thus giving the school third! Boy, did they love her. Some kids are born with a spirit that simply says--get out of my way. She entered college at 16--by the time she was 26, she had her BS, MD, Ph.D & Post-Doc. The foundation of this problem lies in the same place as many of the world problems. The lack of a good foundation in philosophy, psychology and debate in education. It is honestly impressive how well politicians, CEO's and religious leaders have thought us that we should leave such things up to them. Their tactics are no longer working that well due to the internet, many of the younger generation are finding their way to these subjects online. I just fear it won't be enough, we have many difficult, global, issues we all need to deal with. Otherwise this planet might not stomach us for much longer. Actually discussing emotions such as hate, anger and fear and giving our children tools to better deal with them through a basis in psychology would make a huge difference. Especially if you combine that with discussions on morals and ethics in a format that uses the many skills found in debate. We humans have the people, the researched, the knowledge, experience and technology. What we now need more than anything else is the wisdom to use it responsibly. I think we can all agree leaving this just to the politicians, CEO's and religious leaders isn't working out that well.

the same thing happened in Germany ( in Siegen and Essen ), mainly since the covid 19 pandemic. I am not from China, but more than some people turned to be violent in speech and behaviour at that time. my career path has also been more negatively affected by racism. I was called corona virus, humiliated in working place and private business. Ironically, I know more about western culture than china for example their language, cities. At this point, I realized that I should have learned more about east and south east asia culture because no matter how little I know about it , less educated people in other part of the world, which is unfortunately many, will blacken me if something relatively negative happens from those countries. However, i do respect people from different culture and race who judge individual not based on their origin. It does not need a high IQ and EQ to manage this.

I was in the park with my daughters, as I was sitting down and group of teenagers walked passed me and one of the boy said to me “ching ching ching”. I was shocked and didn’t know how to react. His friend told him to stop while laughing. Last week I was walking to a restaurant in high street with my family. We walked pass a pub, there were many people drinking outside of the pub, they look like pupils from the university nearby, a group of smoking / drinking pupils saw us and started talking about “racist” and laughed. I didn’t hear what exactly they were talking about but it made me feel really sad. That night after the dinner I felt unsafe going to get our car through walking high street. In this modern world, the children should be more educated about races. The lady who claimed to be nationalist is upset about different races settling in the UK. What would she think if a white family settled in an Asian country and was unwelcome by the locals? To be honest, white people are very welcomed in my own country, why can’t she be the same?

As long as we live separate "china town" "little italy" etc etc we always have racism, when we start to live together mixed with one another then this problem will be much much little,in Singapore they have done this with law,they cannot live "all Chinese" in the same building same with all other nationality,they are all mixed and it's the law! The result are so many diffrent culture living together knowing each other and racism is so low there....sorry for my English btw

I don't agree with what you are saying, I don't think that matters to racists. The white white racist women, who claims to be a Christian does not care if a Chinese or any other Asian were Christian, she looks at you and you are "different and the other". I hate to say this but Asians can be VERY racist themselves. The way they treat Africans in Africa, their anti-blackness sentiments in the U.S., and their treatment of blacks in some Asian countries can make me apathetic to their "plight" at times. They're also very discriminating against darker skin people (who aren't black). It's like they're now getting a taste of their own racism.

Interesting and sad that people can be so ignorant. Chinese immigrants to UK generally keep a low profile and are themselves very hard working, law abiding and non confrontational.Let's hope these racist actions stop. Regarding the Victim, Mr VU who is supposedly Vietnamese, why does he speak Cantonese, a Chinese dialect from Southern China ?
@MA-fg5hz
@MA-fg5hz 2 жыл бұрын
Why doesn't Mr.Vu speak English,he's lived in the UK for 30 years. Anyone who takes up residence in another country should learn the language. Everyone. By not doing so it isolates that person. I lived in France for a while tho I didn't speak French when I arrived, I spoke it well enough to communicate by the time I left & that was only a couple years.

As someone who grew up in South Africa, I'm not going to say I've never met with racial prejudice, but the incidents were mainly incited by my actions and words rather than purely racial attacks. I went to Canada for secondary school, and unfortunately, race/racial is not a topic I found my white teachers like to talk about. Maybe the motto is to just accept and get on with your life. I applaud the filmmaker for making a movie about hate crimes to raise awareness.

Racism has always been there, pre or during covid. It just gave those racists another reason to justify their insecurities. What's interesting is they rarely experience the same in Asia, infact we look at anyone outside our race of more value and importance which possibly gave them the courage to continue doing so as they feel superior.

It's because mass immigration actually creates the intolerant attitude, as people see the countries that once were homogenous become very chaotic. Stop mass immigration to the West and they'll be more people. Start mass immigration to Asia, they'll be less polite to foreigners. Very simple.

have always been harassed by street kids, shouting at me, trying to jump scare me when im on a bike and even throw rocks at me, but if I take that in and perpetuate the hate within myself, I would have died by suicide long ago, and now I have developed a complete poker face and completely immune to those scares and shouts, much like whence you've watched horror movies 24/7 for 20 years, everything becomes plain and at times only slightly annoying, but at least I can still live a somewhat normal life

Part of the problem is that Chinese, just to name one, congregate in "asian" or "Chinese" communities. You cannot hide yourself away "among your own" and consider yourself integrated. By doing so you are helping to create the very divide that has formed between indigenous and non-indigenous people. When you are better at (again to name one) Chinese than English, when you havent adopted some sort of native English dialect, when what you eat, say and do aren't alligned with the English how can you expect them all to just accept you fully and without prejudice. And it is prejudice that leads the more aggressive among us to lash out. None of that is to condone racism or violence in any kind, but surely there is also room for introspection in the asian camp? If I could change one thing about asian foreigners around the world it would be just that. The removal of every "chinatown", "koreatown" and so on, a major shift in the attitude towards integration amongst imigrants especially in language and culture. "When in Rome..." We can never eliminate the hate entirely. Women, men, foreigners, homosexuals and weird non-binaries... there will always be hate when you aren't "one of the pack"
