Fantastic lesson! Bautiful playing,, and clearly explained. I really believe that there are very few people in the world who wouldn't love this song when they heard it, whether it's the original recording by Marvin Gaye, or just the chords well played like in this lesson. It's that kind of universal groove.

Everyone needs to listen to this whole album, in order, a few times a year. This song takes on new meaning when you realize "What's going on" isn't a question. This lesson is beautifully done, you spoil us, my man 👍🏼👍🏼❤️

You're the man Jon! It's not George Benson from my earlier request, but it's a killer jazz feel! 👍 🍻

Great lesson here. Los Lobos version ( Live ) uses Am7-Bm7 :// on the Interlude while the sax solos.

Wow - thanks for motivating me to finally tackle this song, thanks to your clear and concise (and nice-sounding) chord shapes on this! Just played through it all a few times, and in so doing, discovered two tweaks I like to throw in, one to make it easier to play that A triad with the B bass (which comes up not only in the verses, but also as the follow-up chord to the Am7 in the instrumental part), and one that I just like the sound of better. 1) Proposal for making it easier to play the A triad: If some folks, like me, find it a hard stretch to drop that first finger down to make that B9 afterwards whilst keeping the other strings in place, including the 3rd finger on the B bass, then try using your thumb instead of your 3rd finger to play the B bass (and mute the 5th string, of course) and line up the triad starting with your pinky at the bottom of the triad, followed by fingers 3 and 2 cascading upwards, PLUS adding the first finger on the high E string (not included in the chord shape shown in the video) one fret higher up than the top of the triad, i.e. making the cascade over 4 instead of 3 frets? That makes the chord sprawl over 4 rather than three frets, but it‘s more comfortable to then to just lift up the first finger (pressing the high E) and move it one string over, to the 2nd string, for that B9.😊Not only that, but the fingered high E string sounds really great, too - especially later on in my second proposed tweak…. 2) In the instrumental interlude with the Am7, it sounds really nice to add one‘s pinky 2 frets up on the high E string, thus accentuating the feeling of a building up of tension in that part of the song. Then, follow it up not with the triad A, only, but with the chord shape I describe under 1) above (the 4-finger cascade using the pinky on the D string, and the thumb on the B bass). At that point in the song, the added note on the fingered high E string gives me more of sense of resolution of tension, like in the original. My apologies to all for my not knowing how to call the chord I‘m speaking of. I‘m just a play-it-by-ear kinda guy. ;-)

I left a comment before, but after thinking about what you asked us, Jon, as far as what we would like to learn next, for me, it would be the melody to What's Going On.
