the thing is, I’ve always been told by my friends, “oh you’re so lucky to be an only child. I hate my siblings”. that’s gotta be the saddest thing I’ve heard. How selfish you have to be to think that like I’ve got the perspective of being so absolutely lonely to the degree I cried myself to sleep for a good chuck of time because I just realized oh my god, I’m so lonely. I have no one to turn to. I literally have had to learn so many things on my own because of the fact I don’t have someone to relate to. I can’t reflect on someone, I can only grow from my parents who essentially shelter me. As the people said in the video, thinking of my parents death TERRIFIES me. I’m going to be the ONLY one who truly had a strong connection with these two individuals my entire life and will have to go through that alone in the future. It’s disheartening. I’ve grown alone, struggled with coping, and I’ll end up continuing on this my entire life because I just don’t have anyone. If you’re the lucky individual who has a sibling, for the love of god be grateful of them. Give them a hug, call them stupid. Cherish that relationship. Don’t let petty feelings get in the way of you seeing how much you actually love them. If I could, I’d definitely trade the world for a sibling. :(

A couple downsides to being an only child: crippling depression, lonely, boredom, nobody there for you, anxiety, socially awkward, crying yourself to sleep, nobody there to stand up for you, nobody to comfort, hard to make friends, less quality time, overprotective parents Edit: Hey it's me from 10 months later, looking back at this comment I wrote, none of these match up with my circumstances at all. I lost my brother when I was eight, and I can confirm it was way better having someone closer to my age to spend time with (well there is a ten year different but it's better than the age difference between my parents and I lol). Anyways, the point is to cherish your siblings and not dwell on wishing you were an only child !!!

I have a similar experience. I was a miracle child that wasn't guaranteed life because of my mom's age, but I survived. When I was about three, my mom became pregnant again. However, she lost the child and in a later explanation she blamed it on herself. This not only left me with more questions but also the thought that I was so close to having a sibling and trying to imagine life with one. If that child never existed, maybe I would've been more content about my situation. But now I can't stop thinking about this life I could've had and it kinda hits me hard when people say that I'm lucky or that they wish they were an only child.

Siblings aren’t a magic pill that will improve your life. I know plenty of people with siblings who are extremely unhappy with their family dynamics. Did you know sibling abuse is often downplayed and the most underreported type of abuse? Plenty of people are in therapy or should be in therapy because of how they feel about their siblings. Only children tend to glamorize sibling life because they don’t know what it would have been like with siblings. What if you had a sibling and your parents’ relationship fell apart because of it? What if it caused your mother to be permanently disabled (many people develop chronic illness after they have a baby)? What if your mother or father developed depression because of the changes two children brought your family? What if your parents couldn’t afford much with more than one child? The whole point is, whatever your family dynamic pining after what could have been is so useless. It would be worth talking to your parents about why they chose to/could only have one. Your parents might reveal some very hard and beautiful truths.

I am an only child that was raised by my mom who was also an only child. I never knew my father so I dont really have a lot of relatives. People always pity me or feel sad or sorry for me but you know what? Its what I'm used too. I couldnt imagine it any other way. My mom passed away about a year and a half ago and I made all the arrangments and stuff by myself since there really is no one else to help out. It was hard but I did what I had to do. Just turned 20 and the more I grow up, the more I get really sad about not having any siblings and I’ve wanted them my whole life. Imagine not having anyone to share those little moments and memories with that actually shaped your identity. I had cousins but none my age, and I get so jealous seeing the inside jokes, the fights, the hate, the love they share with each other that I might just never get. Personally, I love my siblings but we don't really care about quality time with each other. Yes, we share inside jokes, fights, the hate and the love with each other but that happens only sometimes. I have 2 Big sisters myself but I feel lonely. I felt that way since I was born and I still feel this way now. We live together but we're more like neighbours who help each other but don't hang out. I've been taught that just because we're sisters doesn't mean that we'll have to bond or spend quality time with each other. We have a bond but it's not deep, it's the kind that says 'because you're my sister, Ill protect and help you'. But we don't mind. Sometimes, I envy my cousins for being so close to each other that they can't live without each other. But that's my life. I don't have friends but I'm used to living this kind of life. I also don't spend time with my parents that much. Right now I'm studying math so who has the time for bonding.

@@Alanislynx thanks for cheering me up^_^. I just felt so bad inside recently (sorry for the previous comment). Like, there is something inside my heart that makes me feel like I'm not fine. Telling my parents is my last option because I'm scared of how they would react. I would talk to my middle sister but my mom would somehow get involved and they'll start fighting (as always). My eldest sister is already busy with her college work and she's usually tired. Im scared of being involved in my sisters lives because to me they are sophisticated college students who will join engineering and I'm just a weak crybaby who will join high school next month. Im scared of what might happen if I do anything wrong. Also they are already busy with their own lives so who cares about me, right? Personally, I would like 2 kids in the future and I'll make sure that their age gap is small. But I respect your decision 😘

I dont understand all these lonley only children, I am an only child and I absolutely loved it. I was never board or lonley, I got showered with attention and because I spent so much time around adults I feel like I was very emotionally mature at a young age. I also think it was beneficial because when I left home I didnt find it scary to be on my own as I was use to it. I do understand everyones experiences are different, but I felt it was important to point out the positives as being an only child often gets a bad rap.

I do agree with some of what they said, but I just think that it's hard to generalize such a big group of people based on the experiences of 3 humans. My parents were always working for a large amount of my childhood and that made me a very lonely person. I guess I didn't realize it at the time, but that shaped me into having certain struggles that I feel like could've been avoided if I had always had someone there to talk to. That's just my story as being an only child, and though this video depicts a strong image of what it's like, I still do believe that everybody goes through loads of different stuff.

You are right about it being impossible to put everyone in a category. I hated having a sister because she was not a nice person. My husband was beaten up by his brother. I haven't met an adult only child that hated it but this comment section proves that many do. I think it's important for people to adjust because the grass is not always greener on the other side.

something that breaks me and makes me feel I've missed a part of life is that ill never understand that sibling dynamic of "I hate you!" playing tricks on each other and annoying each other. it's so beautiful and I've never been able to relate to that dynamic even when people try to be that way with me as friends, I just dont... know how to do it. in a way, you miss out on being a child as you're expected to act like an adult.

Aww! I’m an only child basically, and I am both introverted and extroverted. More extroverted because I LOVE talking to people. totally agree. for me it has always felt extremely lonely and now that my parents have died it is like a great big hole in my soul. And as long as i can remember I was always afraid that they would die, because that would mean that i would be all alone. Nobody I can talk to about how things were when at home when I was a child. How my mother would make peasoup in the winter, or my father could play the harmonica like nobody else. For me there is nothing great about it.

I love being an only child. I'm very creative, gained a lot of Independence. I was never spoiled. I worked as a teenager and made my own money. I'm not easily bored. I can do many things on my own. I'm only needy with my Mom but hardly with anyone else. You learn a lot about life, especially when you lose someone you love. I have been blessed with having close friends who became my siblings. I thank God for them. I do have half-siblings older than me. Out of all of them, I'm the only one that earned a college degree. I'm independent at work; I like to get the tasks done. I'm extrenely happy to be an only child. I never felt any loneliness or desire for siblings. But I'm introverted and independent. My best friend is basically the sister I got to choose. Both of my parents came from big families and their horror stories and even their fond memories of growing up with siblings seems like it would've been suffocating to me.

Suffocating is the right word: drama, noise, pointless competition, lack of privacy/discretion. I only ever theoretically gave thought to siblings (just one, preferably older and only around to help out with aging parents. Otherwise I enjoyed/still enjoy my quiet life that happens on my terms). I have a friend who comes from a large family and he freely told me he couldn't leave that environment fast enough. Other have mixed experiences. Siblings aren't for everyone.

As an only child,i always found more con's than pro's,mainly because i didn't quite get to look at the pro's.The benefits of being an only child are that,as you grow all by yourself,you learn to be independent.I,myself,prefer to do works by myself as i don't have to listen to other's opinions and that i have to please nobody but myself with how i do it.Other benefits are that,after a whie,loneliness ain't that bad.Another benefit is creativity.As said before,an ony child is,indeed,quite alone.That's why we have to constantly find a way or another to entertain ourselves.I tend to talk to myself,for example.I tend to divide mysef into two different persons and just talk about whatever.I like to do that as it's like having a twin who knows everything about you but doesn't laugh at you,and you can talk about anything that crosses your mind. Con's of being an only child is lack of activity.Being the only one in the house of your(or close) to your age is very boring.Of course we,only childs have friends,but we don't share a house.We find ways to entertain ourselves,but after a while,it gets boring not to talk to someone like you,but only people who are *at* *least* in their 30's.And cousins,we all have cousins,but we don't see eachother everyday.The only cousins i met,for example,two of them are siblings,and they're young.One is 5-6 years old,and the ther one is 1-2 y/o.And the third and last cousin is only a few days old. Other things about being an only child is that,no,we're not spoiled,and we don't get everyhing we want.We're raised just like you are,but we simply don't have to share anything.And,by the way,there are some of us who actualy would *love* to have one or more siblings.

One of the worst things about being an only child is when your parents pass, it’s just you with those memories, and you’re the person sole responsibility falls on. My mom passed when I was 15, so it’s just me and my dad and my dad is starting up with dementia-I’m only 19. It’s hard, there’s no one else to rely on but myself, but I feel like I learned (for me personally) independence and how to be at peace with just me. It’d be nice to have other people around, but I don’t need them at the same time.

As an only child, I was blamed for everything (including what my parents did), I was lonely, was constantly watched regardless of age. It's true, I had a lot more than most, like more tech, a larger room, but I wasn't really allowed to share any of it because of my parents "you didn't buy it so it's not yours" mentality, I had no idea how to socialize, I always thought I was targeted because I didn't understand humor (my parents didn't want me to tell annoying jokes so I was taught everything was serious unless it was slapstick), and EVERYTHING was censored, my mother hated that I watched Star Wars as a kid, and hated even more that it was a huge part of my life (it still is), and I was essentially yelled at at school when I didn't know things, I almost got in trouble at school (early school) because I was "causing trouble" asking people how to space, since I didn't know how to use a keyboard (I wasn't allowed on the computer because if I had the internet, ALL the censorship would go out the window), I know my life wasn't bad, but in my experience compared to people, that I know at least, with siblings, being an only child absolutely sucked

I loved being an only child, and I still do as an adult. Of course, there are downsides but that can be said of having siblings as well. Some people hate their siblings. I'm thankful I was raised an only child because I grew up with an incredibly vibrant inner world that I still have. I always know how to entertain myself, and I am very very good at being alone. I'm more self reliant than I feel I would have been if I had had siblings. I can spend an entire day in my own company, not talk to anyone, and be completely fine. My parents and I are a solid trio, even though having all of their attention can sometimes be a double edged sword, like when I went through my rebellious teenager phase and all I wanted was space. There were times I wished they had someone else to focus on. I also feel like I struggled to relate more to my peers as a kid, my teachers would always put on my report cards that I was bright but did not perform well in groups. Of course, time and maturity helped.

I have seen so many people with siblings not on talking terms with each other or going through ugly fights due to inheritance issues as well. It’s fun since you get most of the attention, your the only disappointment your family has to deal with, you get stuff like a game system or something amazing you don’t have to share, no one can annoy you, and many other things. Downsides because there are many that it must be a list: - lonely - no one to play with - no one to fight with - no one to talk to when you need it - over protection from your parents (or whoever takes care of you) - the constant attention sometimes gets annoying - your parents expect the most out of you, even when you try - parents blame you for not doing specific actions that you didn’t know had to be done - no one to blame when you get in trouble (the pets don’t work either) - you rely on friends for social interactions - having the constant wish for siblings every single time you want one and the pain that you might never get one - no one to do your homework - no one to defend you from the adults in the family - no one to share moments with Tell me if I missed any downsides to having no siblings 😂

I'm an only child. I was wishing I had siblings from the time I was old enough to think. But I never got them. It was probably for the best, because then my NDad would've had more innocent children to abuse. I grew up scared, sad, codependent, anxious, socially inept, minimally functional, and completely, utterly, devastatingly alone. My advice to good parents is to have at least two children. For every only child who says they're more independent because of it, there'll be two people like me who were genetically hardwired to only respond to external cues and validation for happiness, and/or are an HSP like me (another lovely rare genetic mutation that makes you hypersensitive to everything). My advice to bad parents is to get sterilized.

It's all about perspective. There are definitely pros and cons to both. But it's also about the parent's approach. I probably would have a relationship with my mum if I didn't have siblings.
