Join my friend Paul Thomson and me as we spend the day photographing a stunning waterfall on the east side of Vancouver Island. The hike into Rosewall Creek is about 5km, and the reward at the end is a truly beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush forest.
In this video, I share some of the thought process I go through when deciding how to compose my images-what works, what doesn’t, and how I approach the scene creatively. Along the way, I also stumble upon an incredible patch of mushrooms that becomes an unexpected highlight for some intimate nature photography.
Come along on this adventure and enjoy the serene beauty of Vancouver Island’s forests and waterfalls!

I always enjoy your videos regardless of the length Adam. I think 15 - 20 minutes for videos is ideal for me since I don't always have time to watch when they are first published, but I do eventually get around to viewing yours. Some photographers post 30+ minute videos once a week, and although I do enjoy their work it is next to impossible to keep up the them.

Make them as long as they need for you to say what you would like to say! The splashes of fall color were wonderful to see around the waterfall. The mushrooms were my favorite...

I feel I like longer videos for some reason. You do a lot of work exploring these places and figuring out the compositions. It is very good to know more about your process.

Thank you ever so much, Adam, for this beautiful impressions and fotographs! I like your longer videos (some 20 Minutes) very much, because I like to join you on hikes in your beautiful environment. And I like your videos with guests and friends - good entertainment and real fun from time to time. Keep going! I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and the best of luck for the next year. I think we all need this these days…

I prefer the longer ones personally. I know YT has been pushing shorter over longer form videos but I prefer the depth of understanding you can get from the longer videos

Enjoyed every second of the video. Long or short, they are all good, forced to choose, I'd choose the long videos, for the simple reason I get more of your mastery!

I love the pano of the waterfall! I didn't know that bark harvesting is why the cedar trees look that way, cool info! I don't have a preference for video length, as long as you judge it to be complete, I will watch it. This creative process must be fulfilling for you in order to be the most interesting for viewing to us.

The sound of waterfalls is heaven sent. I'll just sit and listen between shots. Been shooting waterfalls in video at 60fps and then slowing the footage down in post. 🙂I've discovered some amazing mushrooms, always on the lookout for them when in the woods. Sometimes I navigate by compass. I've seen birch trees that were stripped for canoes back in the 1960's.

Wonderful location, Adam. Really enjoyed the scenery and comps in this one. As for vlog format, 12 to 20 min is my sweet spot. Anything much longer than that is a bit of a time commitment. Maybe weave in longer videos every once in a while for longer backpacking type trips.

Such a beautiful woodland and a fairytale waterfall. You are truly blessed. The mushrooms I think were Galerina (very poisonous). Nice to look at, but deadly to eat. I enjoy your slow paced, longer Videos, but it really depends on the content. If you are finished saying everything there was to say, the video ist over.😂

Love your videos! Always look forward to watching them. I was at Rosewall Falls in October. No water was running from the pencil waterfalls, quite disappointed. I also photographed the big log with the Funghi! Quite bit of a hike to get there, I only managed to get two photos. I understand time is valuable in everyone’s lives. I think 20-30 minutes is a sufficient time I would think for your videos? I’m curious to know how much time it must take you for the entire process for a 10 minute video? Your drive to the waterfalls. Hiking to the waterfalls. Video recording and photographing the falls. Then hiking back Driving home. Then editing your photos and videos and finally uploading them to the web. Must be lots of work envolved? I’d have to guess 5-10 hrs of work for a 10 minute video? Your time is much appreciated Adam, I’m sure many of us enjoy your videos, I know I do!

Awesome mushrooms! 🍄 Love your visits there. “Long” and “short” are subjective terms. This video was 10 minutes long, I believe your average is 15 - 20 minutes. To me, length depends on the content. The longer it is, the easier to tell a more detailed story. Watching you get to your location with B roll is half the fun, which adds to the length. Of course, if you’re in a forest of mossy trees you can spread that out for hours! 😅

I love the intimacy of the images from the woods and rivers, and this episode especially the mushrooms. As to length, understanding how much work and time is devoted to your videos, I greedily want more! Also, a question about pianos: I shoot APSC, and I know a set of verticals to make a pano might (would) interfere with the continuity of water flow, but hope to try for a higher-resolution final image by segmenting the exposures around the boundaries of various content. Am I overthinking this? Just can’t yet afford a GFX!
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 15 сағат бұрын
The mushroom pano might have been hard to do as a stitched pano. I guess the question is does it matter if you crop the smaller files/ What is the final output? what are you using the photos for? Ver large prints then yes a larger file would be nice but other than that does it really matter?

I like the longer videos, but I realize they may take more effort that is not rewarded. Honestly, I'll be watching either way, sort-of hooked at this point ;-) Nice images, BTW. I might have done a vertical panorama of the pencil-thin waterfall with the moss-covered rocks leading up to it. I've been liking my 9x16 images lately. It took some getting use to, but it is growing on me.

15-19 minutes is my sweet spot, i tend to look at longer as too much of an investment and shorter as not enough substance. That said i did enjoy todays video. Some of my favorites, like yourself, i am going to watch no matter what but ideal 15-19 minutes.

Definitely prefer longer form videos for your type of content. I reckon 20-25 mins is best for your regular content. Indeed, would rather have that fortnightly than shorter ones weekly - but then you do have to feed that damn Algorithm ! For the more special events, places collaborations a periodic longer one, say 40 mins can also be good. Thanks for all the hard work and everything you do 👍😊

Lovely images as always. I generally prefer a longer video, in the 18-25 minute range. Just an FYI, I rarely have any negative thoughts or comments about your work, I am a big fan but I wasn’t a big fan of your pano crops this week. Preferred the full or uncropped versions for the most part.

It depends on the content and flow of the work. The content being the subject, your Technical skills videos can be longer as long as not dry (boring Professor), practical skills videos outside action how to videos can be shorter with one or two main points/details.
