👋 Do you want a V8 in your pickup truck? Let's put the 2022 Ford F-150 EcoBoost head to head with the 5.0L V8 Coyote motor! I know not everyone likes a V6 with twin turbos under the hood of a legendary American pickup truck, but Ford puts the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost in a good majority of their F-150 trucks. The 5.0L V8 is the standard engine tho and is a bit cheaper too. So does the V8 have more to offer than the EcoBoost? Lets compare the 2022 Ford F150 equipped with the EcoBoost vs the V8 and see what is the best engine for the 2022 Ford F150 truck?!

This is a a real review: I had a 2017 3.5 eco….Kept up on maintenance constantly and still ended up having issues. Low miles. After 80k miles… it was over. Traded for a 2022 5.0…. Love it. Feels like a truck. Not a large car! My opinion: 5.0L

I bought a 2021 with the 5.0 V8 instead of the twin turbo with the thinking there will be less to break having a classic V8. After my purchase I found out that the new 5.0 V8s have cylinder deactivation 🤕. I hope I didn’t make a mistake… 20k miles so far and my fingers are crossed.

What I like about the ecoboost is that I have the choice to go powerboost and get that generator. If I ever trade my 5.0... I'll get the powerboost. So far I LOVE the 5.0 and how it runs. And it keeps pulling. It doesn’t seem like it runs out of power on the top end either. If I didn’t have a f250 on order I would most definitely be tuning and possibly supercharging it. Sport mode on my 2022 5.0 F150 seems to hold lower gears in the 10 speed, in turn keeping the engine in higher rpm range for quicker acceleration. I keep mine in "Eco" mode 95% of the time. It has a cylinder deactivation system but I don't ever feel the transition and not much information as to how it actually functions. 80 miles daily mixed driving commute and my average at 8k miles is 22 mpg in my supercrew FX4. I cruise at 70 for about half my commute but don't hammer it from lights etc. I'm extremely satisfied with my truck. My '15 Explorer Sport Ecoboost averages 16-18 in same scenario but has AWD and 6 speed transmission. Quicker off the line but the 5.0 is a "revvy" engine and loves RPMs and pulls hard when you hit the sweet spot. Same feeling as the 15 Mustang GT I sold. I prefer 5.0.

I traded in my 2016 Platinum 3.5L Ecoboost for a 2023 XLT 5.0L V8. My '16 served me well for 136K miles.. But I did have coolant leakage around the passenger side turbo which cost about $1200 to fix. This came at about 110K miles. I don't have a heavy foot, so the low end acceleration and power differences are not really noticeable for me. I am indifferent to 0-60 timing. While I've only had the '23 for a few days, I really like the simplicity of the V8 and am looking forward to towing my 5000 pound trailer to see how it does.

One of the most unbiased and honest reviews I have watched. I had a 2010 with the 5.4L gutless fuel pig. Ordered a 2016 5L for simplicity and immediately noticed the bottom end lag. Practically no bottom end, dead below 3K. In 2017 I tried the 2.7 which was a great efficient commuter, lacked power towing. Ordered a 2020 FX4 with 3.5L and wow! Bottom end torque for days and decent economy. Like you said drop a $500 5 Star tune in it and you have another 50-60HP in ten minutes. I just ordered my 2023 with another 3.5L Ecobeast. I thought about the 5L and adding the Whipple charger, but those are over 8K now and require a weekend of labor w/ warranty issues. 5L has simplicity and sound, but after 200k of Ecoboost ownerwhip I have faith. Even after going through the cam phaser issues.

Lots of questions on gear ratio for these pickups. The only way these two have the same gear ratio is if they are both 3.31 which is very popular. At that point the 5.0 is rated for 9400 and the Ecoboost is rated for 11300. At max tow the Ecoboost has 3.55 and 5.0 has 3.73 and Ecoboost is 13900 and 5.0 is 13000. I go with Ecoboost due to towing in the mountains. The turbos with forced induction lose much less power than the NA 5.0.

@@peterjones4621 way off Petey. The Ecoboost burns more fuel towing and will fly by you and your airstream going up the mountains. For a couple reasons. The Ecoboost with the Max Tow package can tow 14k lbs. And the Raptor is the worst F-150 for towing, because of its off-road setup, so comparing your Raptor towing experience does not apply to the normal Ecoboost F-150. Ford considers the 3.5L Ecoboost as its premier towing 1/2 ton for a reason. You should really research this if you're making reviews and influencing people.

@@peterjones4621 After owning many v8's and currently owning the ecoboost with the Max Tow package, my real-life research tells me the ecoboost is the better towing experience. You're not going to get the torque down low on a v8 which is what makes the ecoboost a better experience. I love v8's, but they don't tow better than the ecoboost, unless you go diesel (which also use turbos). Putting twin turbos on a coyote is an option that I would love, but not very practical. You're right turbos get hot, but people that are educated and have towed with the ecoboost knows to lock out the overdrive gears to keep the rpm's higher, which limits the use of the turbos and keeps the engine cooler by circulating more coolant. As far as reliability turbos will wear out faster than NA, so just replace them when they do. If you can't part with a couple of thousand dollars every 150k-200k miles, then you should stick with V8's. For me the better experience for all those miles is worth the maintenance of turbos.

I owned two Chevys pre-cylinder deactivation with no problems but the ones I owned afterwards never made it to 300,000 and I put 60k a year on for work. A chum of mine is the service manager at a Ford dealer and he told me not to get the 5.0 now where before it was opposite. He's knows whats coming in and filling his shop. Ford is fixing them under a certain mileage but they’re replacing them with the same parts as opposed to a redesigned part. It makes you wonder what’s next. @BrosFOURRSpeed

But at that sea level the V8 is probably making even less power. Turbo engines can work at high levels easy without loosing power. I don't think a few cents in gas really adds up to make any sort of difference that makes it or breaks it. If you average 15 MPG and drive 10k miles in a year. If you save even 30 cents per gallon. Thats just $200 bucks in a whole year. That's $16 a month. I don't think anyone is hurting to save $16 a month. 3.5 will give you much more out of your $50k truck and make that price of the truck much more worth it's value then having a boggy V8 that high

Without knowing the gear ratios on each, this is a meaningless comp. A 3.31 ratio on the V8 will give you better gas mileage but much less power lower down the power band c/w the 3.73, and would also be inferior to the 3.73 for towing. The right comp is the 5.0 with 3.73 vs the 3.5 with 3.55 ratio

3:31 is the lowest available gear for the 5.0, 3:55 and 3:73 only available with V6. In 2wd models, btw. I didn't check the 4x4 because I don't need or want it.

True but at the end of the day the eco definitely has more torque at a lower rpm. Every 3.5 I’ve driven at work feels stronger down low than my neighbors 5.0

@@r2ba435 It will naturally feel stronger, read my comment above. The only way to really tell is if the trucks are Identical other than engine, which Ford doesn't sell.

Buddy, you need to look at Fords specs on towing! 3.5 out tows the 5.0 by a lot!! I get tired of hear about how the V8s sound better. I have a 2022 3.5 and I haven't found a naturally aspirated V8 that can beat it. This motor is amazing!!

Yeah before filming the video I only found what I mentioned. Now when I look I see about 13k lbs for each truck. Both are pretty capable for sure!

Equal?? Not hardly, My truck will tow 11,300. A similar 5.0 only 9,300. This is based off of Fords 2022 towing guide!. Guys don't get me wrong, the 5.0 is awsome, but the 3.5 is in another level! There is a reason Ford uses it in the Raptor and the Ford GT! As far as the TRX, who can afford the gas? I guess only the guys from TLF!!

I've heard more horror stories dealing with the twin turbos then I ever have with the naturally aspirated engine. If you want more towing get a super duty.

Towing is not the issue, long term reliability IS. The V8 is a proven, long living and trouble free engine, it can pull up to 13,000 pounds which is more than enough for most haulers, my Airstream maxed out is 8,800 pounds leaving plenty of leeway. The 3.5's longevity is questionable and unproven. You come back here in 5 years and we'll talk about reliability, until then all you have is hype. The gas mileage between the two is not significant so I fail to understand why someone would choose the 3.5 over the V8, it doesn't make any sense.

He got the max towing capacity wrong. He said it's around 10,000 lbs for the ecoboost. That's true for the 2.7L ecoboost, but he's showing the 3.5L ecoboost. The 3.5L has a max towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. That might have changed his analysis a bit.

I’m on my second 3.5 ecoboost. 2015 XLT 2x4 and now 2021 STX FX4. Of course I love V8 sound but the 3.5 is just so fast. Speed wins over noise for me. A turbo 5.0 would be outstanding. Not going to happen though.

It depends where I live and what work I’m doing. Pulling a trailer above 2000’ msl the eco is going to be a lot better. I’ve owned both. My son in law and daughter in law have Ecoboost in an f-150 and Expedition . None of us have had any issues.

The ecoboost tops out towing at 14k lbs not 10… it has more power than the v8 and tows more. I’ll never go back to the v8 vs ecoboost, and all the comments about repairs are ridiculous.. take care of it and it will last they’ve been test hundreds of thousands of miles and still rock solid people who say v8 because that’s what a truck should have don’t have a real argument

I have a 2020 with a 3.5 l equal boost. Then my brother has a 2022. With the 5 l. If we both hook on my trailer. The Eagle boost tows it quite a bit better than the 5 l does. The five liter does doesn't want to take the tenth gear with the big trailer

I'm not sure where you are but the 5.0 isn't the base here in New York State. Its actually a $2,000 upgrade. From the 2.7 liter. Plus when you turbos go out. Well sluggish would be putting it mildly. Woth the 8. It's the 8 and if you have 10k more. Whipple has a supercharger kit that will bring it to 775 hp. Insane. If ford does it will be covered under warranty.

Is the lack of low end torque in the 5.0 due to it being designed for the Mustang? I love the Coyote but it seems like it was designed as a sports car engine and thrown in the f150 as an afterthought.

I’ll take the eco boost all day. Had a 5.0 in a 16 f150 and it was complete dog. They just don’t make enough low end torque for a truck in my opinion. Had to be revved to the moon to make any power. I guess that’s just the nature of the beast with a naturally aspirated DOHC engine. The eco boost drives more like a diesel with its low end torque and is much better suited for a truck in my opinion.
