What's The Deal With Apple's Titanium iPhone?

Each new generation of iPhone brought with it a new marketing gimmick. Apple promoted the iPhone X’s notch, the iPhone 11 Pro’s triple camera system, the iPhone 12 Pro’s flat edges, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island.
But this year, Apple took a different approach. Instead of promoting a feature or new design element, they chose to emphasize the iPhone 15 Pro’s material; titanium. Which many people have found confusing.

Greg, I appreciate your videos as always. But metallurgy is very complex. To begin with, titanium is not "toughter than metal. There are a lot of factors that must be taken into account. For example, I have dents on my titanium frame that look like what aluminum would show/beheve. Only weight is relevant, but in that case returning to aluminum only makes sense. This was a pure marketing move because titanium has been entering the mainstream in recent years. Thank you.

If I had to guess, I’d say Apple’s chief marketers were watch collectors. The benefits of titanium as a casing for wristwatches is fairly well known among watch enthusiasts, and so it’s possible Apple didn’t communicate it because they didn’t think they needed to communicate it.

It really continues to say a lot about Apple running out of ideas when it comes to coming up with something on a yearly basis. I don’t recommend this for most people using a iPhone 13 Pro or newer, but I went from the 14 pro max to the 15 pro max specifically for the almost thunderbolt USB-C port. In my case I say it was worth it as I’ve been using it almost everyday since buying it to offload files quickly into Final Cut Pro on my Mac. Not to mention while filming videos I can use an external microphone easily, along with a thunderbolt hub to keep my iPhone charged, have the microphone connected, and if I choose to record directly to a external hard drive all at once. If you do that use a external battery pack to keep your phone charged or your microphone will pickup the noise in AC current

Yeah, that was my plan until I saw the 15 Pro in Natural Titanium. As soon as I saw it I was like 'Apple, take my money!!!' I used to be in sales for a couple of decades and there are some true-ism's - one of them is people will pay much more for a want than a need. I do not care one bit about how much better the 15 Pro is than my 13, I flat out just wanted it because of Natural Titanium. Titanium doesn’t show fingerprints? I have had the iPhone 15 Pro for a week now and see more fingerprints on the edges than any of the previous models. It also has a less durable screen, (I assume so that the device looks older faster, hence you keep upgrading), and has about 20 scratches all over it. Additionally, the titanium sucks for grip, and I have almost dropped this phone on multiple occasions. Really the only selling point of this phone is the fact that it can shoot in ProRAW, and 95% of people don’t even know what that means. For the 5% of us that do shoot video, a mirrorless camera does a much better job shooting in raw and the color science of a camera like the Sony FX3 is vastly superior. And don’t get me started on them emphasizing the USB-C port as a “feature”. They changed it because they had to, plain and simple. Apple doesn’t give a damn about their customer base and will do anything to milk them for every last cent. The iPhone 15 is one of the biggest tech flops of the 21st century and this spiteful behavior, by Apple, will inevitably be their demise.

Sure, it’s 20g lighter, but was it worth making the phone far more fragile and easier to scratch than DLC steel? Should have just made them in matte steel.

Just to remind you all that the iPhone is NOT the first device featuring titanium. The first one was the Essential Phone, launched in 2017. It was made of titanium on the edges and ceramic on the back... really gorgeous Android phone, unfortunately discontinued.

They can launch the next iPhone with dual wireless antennas so that users can connect to a network while tethering it. This feature is already in macs and it’s called “Internet sharing”. This revolutionary feature (sarcasm) which is already a standard in android phones for ages would sell more iPhones.

Coming from the 14 pro max. 15 pro max has two distinguishable difference that happened to be big deal for me. 1. 15 pro max is lighter. 2. 15 pro max is more comfortable to the hand due to the softer edges.

I had been eagerly anticipating the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro Max as I was considering purchasing my first iPhone. However, I was ultimately left disappointed with the features and performance of the device. It simply did not meet the high standards that I had expected from Apple. As a result, I have decided to hold off on purchasing the iPhone and wait for the release of the Samsung S24 Ultra, which has piqued my interest with its promising features and technology.

Although 15 pro's release was disappointing, it's still a great phone for someone who never used an IPhone. But you could make an argument for the S24 ultra though.

whats special about titanium is the 3000 to 5000 degree sparks if you strike titanium like a match on a rock or cement. that is how golf course fires would happen.

Imagine usb c being a notable feature point on a flagship phone in 2023 when Apple forced USB C into the market before anyone else 7 years ago but refused to make it universal on their most popular devices. Innovation is honestly dead.

Apple couldn't give use a sapphire screen... 2:00 Titanium on a phone with glass panels front and back and scratches easily on anodized colored surfaces. (Around the charge port) Well, It won't bend much but that doesn't matter if the glass breaks. Titatinum has less heat transfer so the phones get warmer while charging or in use. Weight..your're not really going to notice the difference unless you hold the two phones side by side. Titanium is mostly not maganetic making recycling difficult and will likely end up in a landfill. Titanium is better used for aerospace and medical parts...not phones.

The materials have always been a selling point for practically every single iPhone and key aspects of their keynotes, you're definitely wrong on that one. Very wrong. Even their 2G/3G generations highlighted the polycarbonate as being very strong, the 4's with their glass, then the thin aluminum "aircraft" grade. Then the "surgical" grade stainless steel. Etc, how the glass seamlessly smoothed from the perimeter of the iPhone X. Each and every single iPhone had it's materials as a key selling point and differentiating feature.
