I always figured the vault at Fort Knox which houses the US' federal gold reserves was the most protected given that it is guarded by oh ya know THE MILITARY. We are not just talking about a normal vault (I hear even counting the bars is carefully watched) but also that it to my knowledge is the premier location to learn how to drive tanks. So it is a vault with all those vault protections guarded by the US military in a fully fledged military base.

I actually had the privilege to go into the vault, past the huge metal door, but not the bars blocking all the gold for an economics field trip. We did have to go through security, but if you hypothetically got a heist crew together it may be possible to schedule a tour, somehow sneak guns and something to hold the gold past the NYPD and make past the vault door easily with the tour The vault actually can’t be closed remotely, and 2 cards are needed to open and close it, so you’re pretty much set from there. Keep in mind during the tours they keep the vault open. Oh btw how can you say drilling in the middle of Manhattan would be suspicious when all there is in Manhattan is construction on every block lmao

YES it is! And since there is about 508,000 bars spread amongst 122 different compartments, that is an ESTIMATED capacity of about 600,000 litres of volume. NOW.....there is ONE WAY to break into that bank which is to dump 600,000 litres of water (600 metric tonnes) into the vault itself fully flooding it and afterwards ensuring the cylinder door is fully closed afterwards. Now add about 80 tonnes of liquid nitrogen around the outer casing and that water will freeze within 20 minutes or so EXPANDING with a force of MILLIONS OF TONNES of pressure being exerted on the ENTIRE CASING AND WALLS of the vault! The vault will literally EXPLODE into pieces shattering the steel and concrete into powder as the water freezes and turns into its crystalline configuration which takes up more volume than liquid water! Once the casing explodes into multiple pieces, the sheer amount of force will dig a giant cavity lifting the ground and buildings above by about 10 metres and probably destroying the guard facilities and the people in them. (don't rail at me for the cruel circumstances in this description, as this is just a hypothetical thought exercise on my part!) From there, the water and nitrogen ice-based vapour pressure explosions that will come AFTER the vault casing explodes will create multiple secondary cavities which are your likely best escape routes and those secondary explosions will likely connect you to other nearby utility tunnels and/or transport tunnels which are your final destination for escape. With all the damage, it will take responders about 5 to 10 HOURS to dig tunnels through to the vault area leaving you enough time to take about 5 tonnes of gold or about 12 billion dollars worth if you have some help using small wheeled vehicles. Of course on the black market, you would only get about 25% to 35% of it's value as you "Launder Gold" by remelting it and reselling around the world. So in the end you would have only about 3 to 4 billion dollars left over from that 12 billion to split amongst your partners. WATER! It's Powerful! and when it freezes NOTHING can stand against it's force!
