TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Gabi Ury, who became the world female planking champion at age 16, was born with special needs that affected her spine, legs, feet, and a number of internal organs. Although she has lived through 15 major surgeries and related physical challenges, you would never know it by her graceful and playful presence on stage. Gabi talks about the continuous support from her family and friends throughout childhood and her desire to some day make it into the Guinness Book of World Records, a desire made more real when she discovered her ability for planking. Her closing message is that you shouldn’t underestimate others, and you should never underestimate yourself.
Gabi Ury, a 16-year-old high school junior, is the world’s female planking champion, as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Born with special needs that affect her spine, feet, and gluts, she decided to break the world record in order to raise money and awareness for the Children’s Hospital Colorado where she had most of her fourteen major surgeries. She doubled the existing the world record for holding the abdominal plank, a core strengthening exercise, with a time of one hour and twenty minutes. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her family and her dog Mia.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

What an amazing girl! Not only did she break the world record in planking (which I'm sure is extremely difficult), she is very intelligent and is a really great and confident public speaker. Way to go, Gabi! :)

Gabi is absolutely incredible and she has so many great qualities! Its wonderful that she has this opportunity to be able to inspire others! (I know Gabi has had it tremendously harder than I will ever have it but I wanted to say Gabi is inspiring not only because she is determined and ready to tackle anything and everything but she also never let any part of the disability she was given dictate how she would tackle life she really is inspiring to me as a premie because I always thought I couldn't do something or people warned me not to do something risky because it could hurt my health and all but I wished I could have been like gabi and I truly hope people like her are somewhere inspiring others like she inspired me :)

I held a plank for over 30 minutes in my athletics when I was 13 - it was a competition and it was down to me and another girl, and so the other girls friends (the popular girls) decided to come and grab my legs and pull me. I ended up with gym burns on my elbows but remained in plank. I have in when a girl stoop ONTOP of me, was kicking and yelling which still didn't get for me, but being extremely closer-phonic I couldn't stand it so I got up and pushed her off of me Moral of the story - middle schoolers are jerks

"Nothing is impossible" A Wonderful speech! A Wonderful life lesson! You have proved that you can do it. It is great that you took a challenge and achieved it. i talk to myself a lot. a few weeks ago, contemplating the direction my life is taking right now (laid off at end of October, it's now been over 2 months), i said to myself "if it wasn't for the vertigo, i would still be working at Hexcel"..... and now I'm handing out business cards (that i ordered from vistaprint 3 years ago), updating my resume in anticipation of some career changes, and removing clutter from my home office. i stopped myself when i heard those words come out, and i'm still contemplating what this all means. it was kinda nerve wracking at first, wondering how I'm gonna pay rent, etc, but in that moment of confusion over the words i mindlessly uttered, i realized that I do myself no favors trying to find something to blame. if i choose a negative mindset, i will miss out on so many of life's opportunities. i decided to stop defining success by anyone's standards including my own "The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.." Proverbs 16:9
