With violent extremism on the rise, and trust in governments on the decline, Manal Omar believes that it’s time for the peacebuilding community to change its approach to conflict resolution by inviting women, with their full sexuality intact, to take a seat at the negotiating table, where currently less that 10% of negotiators are women. Manal Omar is CEO and Founder of AcrossRedLines, which aims to address the gap in women’s knowledge on sexuality, gender, and intimacy within an Islamic framework. She was an inaugural fellow for Foreign Policy Interrupted and is a 2016 Truman National Security Fellow. She has over 20 years of experience in humanitarian work, conflict resolution, and peace building. She served as the Associate Vice President for the Middle East and Africa Center for the last nine years at the United States Institute of Peace. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

One word.... Wow! Such a powerful message that can only be told so uniquely as it was through your personal story and is so relevant and speaks volumes for all women around the world. I am amazed Minal! Thank you for your courage, your dedication and your voice. You are soo much more powerful than you even know!

Thank you for this powerful talk, and the force of the thoughts within - based on experience and the realities we find ourselves in. This shift is not "nice" but necessary, and I am inspired to be a part of the change.

Nice job Manal! The transition from the first part of this talk to the second honestly caught me a bit off guard--refreshing. "As soon as this war is over, we can talk about your women." --- "This war isn't going to be over until you include the women."

Bravo! Thank You for speaking so well about this very significant issue ... We make up half the population and we have yet to claim our positions of power as required. Required ... We, women equally along with men, Are Required ... so that we balance the energy ... We Are Required to bring Peace. Now, May We Show Up and Do No Harm. May We Allow The Time Required to DO What IS Required and Then DO What IS Required. What are We waiting for? Love & Peace to All

When did people trust the government? There are a ton of inaccuracies here. She did a good job, but most was subjective. Especially in 2018, there were no real conflicts under Donald Trump.

No -because no Middle Eastern man (or any really) would work that hard for women’s rights. If she is trans, well, brava, she’s doing a great job.

@@lbrowning2543 " no - because no Middle Eastern man (or any really )would work that hard for women's rights.". How absurd to stereotype men in such a way.
