A Wise Way

LAPD officer Jack Richter educates us on the process of becoming a police officer. We learn of the rigorous training and thorough background check required of aspiring police officers. Jack gives some examples of what the police academy will consider of the student officers, both physical and mental.

Mission: To help people act, think, and live wiser through knowledge provided by the experienced and well qualified.
A Wise Way Organization is dedicated to providing the world with the proper words of advice through video interviews, books, and written stories. We have developed highly valued material by interviewing professionals about their career, and individuals about their success in overcoming a particular hardship.
A Wise Way is aware of the rapidly growing trend of learning both quickly and easily. The younger generation in particular, is interested in learning the most information in the shortest amount of time or what we call “INSTANT LEARNING”. By creating concise material under 5 minutes, we appeal to those who seek this method of education for their primary source of information. We know that with our condensed informative content, we are improving this new way of learning.
Our committed staff consists of Humanitarian Award Recipients, highly experienced community mentors, and people who are going through the trials and tribulations themselves. Most importantly, our staff consists of individuals who have based their lives around helping others understand what it takes to succeed in life. We truly believe that everyone has the potential to share information in order to help others.
You can help us reach more people by sharing our mission, participating in an interview, or by simply sharing our videos. Your support is highly valued, as any effort is a major contribution in educating and influencing others.

Well, I have 21 years on the job, in busy city, Im 42. A few things 1. Don't expect to get rich. 2. Be prepared to be scrutinized on everything you do. Everyone else thinks they know your job better then you do. 3. You will be a different person in 10 years. 4. You WILL get injured on the job in one way or another. 5. Stay in shape, its a great way to relieve stress and and to stay healthy. 6. Stress is huge, never hesitate to talk about your issues with other Coppers. You have to vent now and then. 7. Were human too, you will make mistakes, just alway put officer safety#1 8. Treat people with respect, you never know who your talking to. 9. Never judge people by their background or skin color. Im white and my best partner hands down was a big black guy, we were like Crockett and Tubbs. 10. Your not saving the world, don't think when your off duty the city is going to crumble, enjoy your off time. And always stay safe, stay positive, stay in shape and put in for every training thats available. Oh yea one more thing, if you can go Federal, better pay, benefits and you an travel a lot.

I guess I should say what I tell others. Being a police officer isn't just a career, it consumes you and you simply are a police officer forever, even when you retire the cop in you never leaves because that is who you are, not just what you are. You are subject to numerous tests, written tests, oral interviews where you are intimidated, physical fitness tests, psychological tests, lie detector tests, doctor exam and IF you pass the academy you go through all that again and put on at least a one year-18 month probation. If you don't make it do not feel bad. Many people don't and in fact we released many people who just were clearly not assertive enough or there as back up when needed...it truly is a calling. Remember, as people run out of buildings because of robbery, burglary or someone out of control, your instinct will tell you to run in and eliminate the threat as others run out for their lives. You realize you put a vest on before duty, I took that time to also pray for direction and safety so I could come home to my kids. It is everything only more than you think it may be. Good friends on the force but not many friends that are not police. You will find that you only trust other officers and they trust you. It is a life changing career and you come home each day feeling exhausted because you don't ever have time to not pay attention to what is happening around you or fellow officers... In all though, If you are single it could be a good job. If you are married or plan to be, date for a couple of years. The stress effects not just you but everyone in your house.

Kids can make it from highschool to the academy, but it's very rare that a kid from highschool will have sufficient life experience, involvement in their community and dealing with people, maturity and carrying themselves like an adult with a cool head and understanding of human nature, as well as a deep desperation to put all of their chips in to this basket in being a cop. That's what police forces are looking for; physically fit yes, desire to be a cop yes, but personality, life experience, work experience, are you willing to put all of your chips in to the cop basket? Are you willing to wait years (potentially) to get accepted in to the academy and to improve yourself in all areas constantly in order to do so? That's what it takes.

@06livefast

Gabba Shanking No, it's a completely different occupation. IT will help like going to college would help, but it's more LIFE EXPERIENCE that they look for ie community involvement, volunteer work, ability to communicate with different personalities, which would pertain more to being a cop than going in fire fights and living in tents in a desert.

About the first thing he said... you do not have to be 21. In some states, yes, but it depends on the department. For example, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade PD allow you to be a cop at 19, one of a fee depts in FL. In my state, you can be a part time cop at 18/19, and full time at 20/21. In Pittsburgh, PA, you can be a cop at 18. You just have to have the proper credentials, such as a certain amount of college credits or graduate from a police academy and be certified (which you can do at 18)

I'm determined. Yes, we all make mistakes. Some of which I honestly forgot. But I need help with a question. I already graduated college, but for audio engineering and now in student loan debt. But I want to go to a different college for criminal justice, maybe for 2 years. I've attempted the ASVAB twice without study (I suck at math without a calculator and being timed). Am I doing something wrong in wanting to be a cop? and is criminal justice the way to go? It's 2017, and I need answers. Sorry to be so demanding, but to me? it's determination!
@Awiseway

God's Son those are great questions and we do not have the answer for them since we don't specialize in that field. What we suggest is going to our local police department and ask those very important questions to a seasoned police officer. Thank you for checking out questions and having the drive to make a difference!

Thank you for the reply. I shall do so sir/ma'am. I consider myself to being 79% of the way toward pursuing a career as a police officer as of this reply. What will be a part of that percentage is going to the actual police department in my area. With that being said, I've already spoken to many police officers at my current job. They tell me to go to school, some say that the department desperately needs employees, etc. I work with customers on a daily, so I see many people who are genuine, many people who have had a bad day, and in between (some very stressful situations with theft as well). I understand that not many departments require a criminal justice degree (but to most, it's considered a bonus so-to-speak). That's my only gripe; I just don't want to be placed in a situation where I am unable to provide for a future family and just live peacefully. Again, I will contact my local police department; and children, that doesn't mean for you to call 9-11. Thank you for all that you do.

God's Son I have done enough research. I have talked to 4 to 5 different police officers and went on a ride along with them. All of them said to DO NOT get a degree in law enforcement or criminal justice because being a cop is not for everyone. If being a cop doesn’t work out for you, you should have a different degree than law enforcement or criminal justice to fall back on and pursue another career. Just putting my two cents out there.

DepPewTee We just interviewed Sergeant Jack Richter for his expertise and so we have no idea if this will affect your chances. What we can say is to listen to this video and heed its warning. Be completely honest about your college experience and explain why you didn’t do well and the reason why it will not affect your “commitment issues” when you get into the position to explain yourself. This is the best advice we can give. Please like this video and subscribe to our channel! Good luck on your career path as CHP

I actually really want to be a police officer, even in Chicago. Even if not there, somewhere I can help the community. This job isn’t like any other job, it challenges you day after day while still teaching you life lessons. You can experience different situations every day, even making someone’s day. I am honestly a very athletic person and at 15 years old have never gotten a detention or referral at any of my schools. The only thing that concerns me is my small size, so seeing small, female cops gives me hope. Wish me luck out there! 👮🏻‍♀️

We dont know if that incident will be enough to turn you down for the job. What we can say, make sure to be absolutely honest about that situation when you are asked if you ever been in trouble in the past. Make sure to align your life with your goal to be a police officer and stay out of trouble. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and talk to a few seasoned police officers now and really get a inside look on what it takes. I want to take classes in college to be ready to become a officer, and I'm definitely ready to put in 18 month of training in the academy. I'm just wondering if I have that chance, because hearing it as 1 out 1000 get chosen just broke my heart right now. @@MariiJJk wow this comment seems like it was from a past life. Covid really did a number on my outlook/plan. Ended up graduating in 2020 but never did transfer to a university. I ended up using the money I got from unemployment to start a business, I currently run a marketing agency (lead generation) and am working with an AI startup. The bot can do things like lead generation, appointment setting, customer service etc. I also have an e-commerce deal with Amazon. Sometimes I think back and wish I would’ve just powered through and continued on this course (entrepreneurship is hard) but I’ve learned a lot and met some amazing people along the way, and I think I’m making a fair bit more than I would’ve in Law Enforcement lol. But, law enforcement wasn’t about the money. I have always felt like something was calling out to me and I was using law enforcement as a vessel to answer that call, but life works in mysterious ways and as it turns out, that calling and sense of purpose has been met by running my own successful businesses. Thanks for reaching out, seeing old posts really keeps me grounded and serve as a reminder of my growth as an individual. Much appreciated.. Edit: I’ll be 30 next month

If someone pressed charges at you when you were 14 would that affect if you got the job or not, my dream is to be a cop so I need answers please.

Letuz we all make mistakes when were younger. We are not in charge nor do we know if your past will prevent your from being hired. However, like Sergeant Richter says, be sure to be completely honest about your past and continue to align your life and goals NOW with your goal to be a police officer! Good luck and please don’t forget to like, share and subscribe to our channel!

I'm interested in being a detective, to my knowledge you need a certain amount of time as an officer, and need to meet certain requirements, this has been a dream of mine, since a lot of my family have been officers, (I'm 16 by the way ). Thanks and any info will help .

Hi, I hope someone can answer my question. I was in the process for correctional officer, but I got a withold on my process because on my phs form I answered no to the question, have you ever used drugs? The day of my interview I told to my investigator that I had an experience with cocaine in 2013. I answered No to the phs form because I only tried the cocaine once and it is not even in my records. I was trying to be honest with my investigator, but at the end of the day it was a stupid mistake. So, do you think if I apply to other departments they will disqualify me because of the withold that I received from the corrections department or do you think they are going to consecrate a liar?

Bryan Quiroga we as a company that interview different professionals, we are unable to answer this specific question. Your best option maybe to check a police forum or even talk to your local policemen/Chief of the department for a better understanding of your situation!

Okay. I currently am 16 years old and i am from Greece. I would love to live in the US, become a US citizen and become a police officer. How many years this procces will take to complete if i get to the us by the age of 19? And last but no least , do i even have any chances of accomplishing this dream ?
@Awiseway
@Awiseway 7 жыл бұрын
Savrawars We are not exactly sure how long the process will take for you to finalize your citizenship but as far as applying for the LAPD, you can be in the process of getting your citizenship and once you are hired you have to complete your citizenship with in three years after your academy graduation. As far as your odds, like Sergeant Richter said, it's 1 out of a 1000 applicants but we think it would be a shame for you not to at least try and pursue something you feel strongly about! One thing is for certain, if you don't try you are guarantee to never have a chance at! Here's is the link to the LAPD website for qualifications www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications Also please watch Sergeant Richter's full interview here, bit.do/LAPD-Sergeant-Jack-Richter

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE!!!One final thing.Is it hard to become a permanent resident in the US if you dont have a university degree for example or a higher education level? I mean, right now i speak 3 different languages Greek,Russian and English. The next year i will be in the final year of high school and if i want i would be able to go to university. However i want to know if its going to be easy for me to be able to live in the US without a university degree. I am also considering joinning the US ARMY. I know you probably dont have the answers for these questions but any feedback would be appreciated!!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!!!

4 year degree at a US university should get you a green card, makes you 23, depending on the agency; US citizenship may be required (eg All of Texas) that makes you 28, 20 years service makes you 48 so pretty easy in theory

Once a cop, remember it never leaves you. Even when you retire you will never shake habits of being a police officer. Still to this date, I only trust police. Most other people will not gain my trust.

Austin E We can’t be sure if tardiness will count you out from your high school attendance. What we can say is that, if you do choose to apply be as transparent and truthful about your past to your recruiter! Good luck in everything you put your mind to!
