Well, I have 21 years on the job, in busy city, Im 42. A few things 1. Don't expect to get rich. 2. Be prepared to be scrutinized on everything you do. Everyone else thinks they know your job better then you do. 3. You will be a different person in 10 years. 4. You WILL get injured on the job in one way or another. 5. Stay in shape, its a great way to relieve stress and and to stay healthy. 6. Stress is huge, never hesitate to talk about your issues with other Coppers. You have to vent now and then. 7. Were human too, you will make mistakes, just alway put officer safety#1 8. Treat people with respect, you never know who your talking to. 9. Never judge people by their background or skin color. Im white and my best partner hands down was a big black guy, we were like Crockett and Tubbs. 10. Your not saving the world, don't think when your off duty the city is going to crumble, enjoy your off time. And always stay safe, stay positive, stay in shape and put in for every training thats available. Oh yea one more thing, if you can go Federal, better pay, benefits and you an travel a lot.

I guess I should say what I tell others. Being a police officer isn't just a career, it consumes you and you simply are a police officer forever, even when you retire the cop in you never leaves because that is who you are, not just what you are. You are subject to numerous tests, written tests, oral interviews where you are intimidated, physical fitness tests, psychological tests, lie detector tests, doctor exam and IF you pass the academy you go through all that again and put on at least a one year-18 month probation. If you don't make it do not feel bad. Many people don't and in fact we released many people who just were clearly not assertive enough or there as back up when needed...it truly is a calling. Remember, as people run out of buildings because of robbery, burglary or someone out of control, your instinct will tell you to run in and eliminate the threat as others run out for their lives. You realize you put a vest on before duty, I took that time to also pray for direction and safety so I could come home to my kids. It is everything only more than you think it may be. Good friends on the force but not many friends that are not police. You will find that you only trust other officers and they trust you. It is a life changing career and you come home each day feeling exhausted because you don't ever have time to not pay attention to what is happening around you or fellow officers... In all though, If you are single it could be a good job. If you are married or plan to be, date for a couple of years. The stress effects not just you but everyone in your house.

Kids can make it from highschool to the academy, but it's very rare that a kid from highschool will have sufficient life experience, involvement in their community and dealing with people, maturity and carrying themselves like an adult with a cool head and understanding of human nature, as well as a deep desperation to put all of their chips in to this basket in being a cop. That's what police forces are looking for; physically fit yes, desire to be a cop yes, but personality, life experience, work experience, are you willing to put all of your chips in to the cop basket? Are you willing to wait years (potentially) to get accepted in to the academy and to improve yourself in all areas constantly in order to do so? That's what it takes.
@ayyblyat94508 жыл бұрын
Would you say it is more beneficial to go into the military to better yourself before applying?
@06livefast8 жыл бұрын
Gabba Shanking No, it's a completely different occupation. IT will help like going to college would help, but it's more LIFE EXPERIENCE that they look for ie community involvement, volunteer work, ability to communicate with different personalities, which would pertain more to being a cop than going in fire fights and living in tents in a desert.

About the first thing he said... you do not have to be 21. In some states, yes, but it depends on the department. For example, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade PD allow you to be a cop at 19, one of a fee depts in FL. In my state, you can be a part time cop at 18/19, and full time at 20/21. In Pittsburgh, PA, you can be a cop at 18. You just have to have the proper credentials, such as a certain amount of college credits or graduate from a police academy and be certified (which you can do at 18)

I'm determined. Yes, we all make mistakes. Some of which I honestly forgot. But I need help with a question. I already graduated college, but for audio engineering and now in student loan debt. But I want to go to a different college for criminal justice, maybe for 2 years. I've attempted the ASVAB twice without study (I suck at math without a calculator and being timed). Am I doing something wrong in wanting to be a cop? and is criminal justice the way to go? It's 2017, and I need answers. Sorry to be so demanding, but to me? it's determination!
@Awiseway7 жыл бұрын
God's Son those are great questions and we do not have the answer for them since we don't specialize in that field. What we suggest is going to our local police department and ask those very important questions to a seasoned police officer. Thank you for checking out questions and having the drive to make a difference!
@RizzlyricistGaming7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. I shall do so sir/ma'am. I consider myself to being 79% of the way toward pursuing a career as a police officer as of this reply. What will be a part of that percentage is going to the actual police department in my area. With that being said, I've already spoken to many police officers at my current job. They tell me to go to school, some say that the department desperately needs employees, etc. I work with customers on a daily, so I see many people who are genuine, many people who have had a bad day, and in between (some very stressful situations with theft as well). I understand that not many departments require a criminal justice degree (but to most, it's considered a bonus so-to-speak). That's my only gripe; I just don't want to be placed in a situation where I am unable to provide for a future family and just live peacefully. Again, I will contact my local police department; and children, that doesn't mean for you to call 9-11. Thank you for all that you do.
@abeerwaheed86 жыл бұрын
God's Son I have done enough research. I have talked to 4 to 5 different police officers and went on a ride along with them. All of them said to DO NOT get a degree in law enforcement or criminal justice because being a cop is not for everyone. If being a cop doesn’t work out for you, you should have a different degree than law enforcement or criminal justice to fall back on and pursue another career. Just putting my two cents out there.

@Awiseway7 жыл бұрын
We dont know if that incident will be enough to turn you down for the job. What we can say, make sure to be absolutely honest about that situation when you are asked if you ever been in trouble in the past. Make sure to align your life with your goal to be a police officer and stay out of trouble. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and talk to a few seasoned police officers now and really get a inside look on what it takes. This isn't a guaranteed way but it will certainly give the knowledge you need to make an informative and give you a little bit of a leg up on the "competition"..... Good luck on your endeavors! please reply. I'm 19 years old in college, I have been doing well and have struggled alot. My heart wants to be a police officer, and I'm willing to put everything on the line to be an officer. I wanted to know what I'm able to do in college to get those qualities to become an officer, because I'm in a leadership program helping out communities. I want to take classes in college to be ready to become a officer, and I'm definitely ready to put in 18 month of training in the academy. I'm just wondering if I have that chance, because hearing it as 1 out 1000 get chosen just broke my heart right now. I won't give up, I want to work hard and wear that badge with honer. my only fear is if i put so much effort and fail. but my mindset is not a fixed mindset, it's a growth mindset. I'm willing to put everything on the line.

juan martin we think you shouldn't be afraid to fail.... even when we fail we learn a lesson that makes us stronger, better wiser for the next task at hand. As far as what you need to do, check out the LAPD requirement website here, www.joinlapd.com/recruitment.cfm?section=qualifications We think it very important to research the job of police officer, even spending some time with a lot officers and asking them questions... real life, real world experiences... You may even want to see if there's a Vader program for your age group. As far as the 1 out of 1000 in the LA county, you have to understand that there are 88 cities in the county and so they all have a branch of officers and police departments. This job isn’t like any other job, it challenges you day after day while still teaching you life lessons. You can experience different situations every day, even making someone’s day. I am honestly a very athletic person and at 15 years old have never gotten a detention or referral at any of my schools. The only thing that concerns me is my small size, so seeing small, female cops gives me hope. Wish me luck out there! 👮🏻♀️

I’m currently in college with a 3.7 GPA about to get my Associates and transfer but at 24 years old it seems like a long shot that I’ll ever get to work at the federal level. I’m contemplating becoming an LEO at the local level but can’t decide. I feel like it would be a better fit for me but I also don’t want to give up on what I’ve been working so hard towards
@MariiJJk Жыл бұрын
Hey, it's been about 5 years, how is everything so far? What do you do now? Did you reach your goal?
@TheHenchmen69 Жыл бұрын
@@MariiJJk wow this comment seems like it was from a past life. Covid really did a number on my outlook/plan. Ended up graduating in 2020 but never did transfer to a university. I ended up using the money I got from unemployment to start a business, I currently run a marketing agency (lead generation) and am working with an AI startup. The bot can do things like lead generation, appointment setting, customer service etc. I also have an e-commerce deal with Amazon. Sometimes I think back and wish I would’ve just powered through and continued on this course (entrepreneurship is hard) but I’ve learned a lot and met some amazing people along the way, and I think I’m making a fair bit more than I would’ve in Law Enforcement lol. But, law enforcement wasn’t about the money. I have always felt like something was calling out to me and I was using law enforcement as a vessel to answer that call, but life works in mysterious ways and as it turns out, that calling and sense of purpose has been met by running my own successful businesses. Thanks for reaching out, seeing old posts really keeps me grounded and serve as a reminder of my growth as an individual. Much appreciated.. Edit: I’ll be 30 next month
