Also, be prepared that the first session is an intake and you probably will only be able to touch surface issues, since you’ll be giving a background on your life and family medical history and such.

Golden answers, thank you, I went in therapy some years ago and the therapyst told me one thing that changed my life :always live your life as a main character, not as a victim, nobody has the power to do anything to you unless you're letting them! Great job!

This was a great reminder of what the true reason for therapy is. Sometimes I find myself desperately searching for that external approval even from the therapist but it's not about them it's about me.

My therapist sits patiently while I do two things: get issues off my chest and more importantly see perspectives on my issues I've never even considered before. She has put forth a couple of jaw dropping theories (she always says that her observations "may not be true") and it has done wonders for my emotional growth. I hope that anyone seeking a therapist can get a great match like I found. The work has been hard, but ultimately will help in the long run. You make informative and thoughtful videos Kati, I think you are an excellent spokesperson for your profession.

Kati. I had therapy sessions with a psychologist about a month ago. But I decided not to meet with her anymore because it kinda seemed to me like she had no idea of what she was doing. There wasn't a plan really established. Also at some point I had a major temper explosion at home because some emotions that I really couldn't control really exploded. When I talked to her about this, she said that she felt embarrassed of what my mother and relatives would say about her since (according to her) instead of me improving, I did worse so it was like her being incompetent. I've seen alot psychologists over the years and I haven't really found one that actually works for me. I do have say Kati that I haven't lost faith in Psychology becuase of you. Somewhere where I live there must be a therapist just as good as you. I hope to find him/her soon. Thank you Kati you are awesome.

Several years ago someone wrote in to Ann Landers inquiring about the chances of finding a competent therapist. She answered that it was about the same as finding a competent plumber or electrician, i.e., 50/50. Incompetent therapists need to be hounded from the profession. Please document your experience on yelp dot com, and don't be afraid to name names.

Thanks for the information! One thing I would like to ask about goals is, what if the goal we have is too vague? My goal in therapy, personally, is to heal from my childhood physical and emotional abuse. But it seems too broad and general. If a therapist were to ask me for something more specific, I wouldn't be able think of anything concrete.

Have been enjoying your videos!! I’ve been to various therapists over the years, on probably my 6th now. They’ve all been similar in that they mostly just sat and listened without providing feedback. It felt a bit pointless with occasional (rare) helpful moments. My current therapist, I’ve been seeing 2-3 months, and she’s amazing. For the first time, I feel like the therapist and I are collaborating to help me. We are both working towards a common goal. Much, much different than I’ve experienced.

Great topic! I’ve already shared the video. I think people are afraid of therapy. But honestly, therapists are just people like me and you and they try to help. For me, I like to journal between sessions as well as spend time before each session seriously evaluating where I am and what I need. I talk out loud to myself for at least an hour beforehand trying to work everything out. That way, by the time I get to my session, I don’t ramble as much and hopefully I’ve narrowed down what is most important to address that week. I think the thing that makes therapy the most effective is a constant re-evaluation of where I stand and what I need.

Perfect timing for this video as my therapist and i had a "check in" with each other this week and it was good to discover we are both very much on the same page and this video just reinforces everything i think about my therapy journey and that i think i have the right therapist for me. Im not sure if it has been asked before but it would be fantastic if you could please do a video on how to deal with family and friends "opinions" on you seeing a therapist in quite a negative way ie "why are you going?' " you don't NEED to go, DO YOU?" etc etc. Ive been experiencing this recently and i always feel like a child who's doing the wrong thing when comments are made........like im disappointing people by trying to look after my mental health (and i do have diagnosed mental health disorders). Thankyou so much.

Hi Kati! Your videos are amazing! I’ve been seeing my therapist since last October. It was so hard for me to open up to her but she kept saying : ,,Don’t be so hard on yourself, give yourself time.’’ And i did what she suggested. And it was such a good advice! It took a while but after a couple months suddenly i opened up and started sharing things i’ve never thought i would ever be able to tell her. I feel like a lot of people give up on theraphy after a few sessions saying: ,,it’s not working.’’ It is so important to give the relationship some time. Sorry for the mistakes i’m watching your videos from Budapest, Hungary. :) Have a great day and thank you so much for your videos! I am more capable of speaking about mental health issues in English with my American friends because of you. Hahaha ❤️❤️

My therapist never gives me homework, which I found weird at first, but now I understand it’s her approach. On another note, I believe you have already talked about this, but it would be great if you could talk more about what to do when you develop strong attachment to your therapist. How to talk about it, what to do, etc... it seems like an extra problem, often a completely different problem than what the client came to get help with.

I got strongly attached to my previous therapist. She said some things that hurt me a lot like she suggested i shouldnt marry my husband (we were engaged back then). Our relationship was and still is tough but that's not what i wanted to hear, instead i wanted to know how to be with him that it's good for me and for us. Now i realize she was right but the wound is still there and it's more difficult for me to fully trust my current therapist, to just surrender to her and to the process.

"If your therapist is doing more work in therapy than you are..." This was my story when I first went to therapy in the 90s. I didn't know what to do, and my therapist at the time didn't tell me. I really wish, at the first appointment, that the therapist would have taken some time to teach me what it means to work, like, that I had to do the work. I've since figured out that my therapy is about working together, but it would have helped to have a lesson from day one. Thank you for sharing this video!

Hey Kati, I'm kinda new here but your videos helped me a lot. I'm a first year in high school and am now in the process of getting therapy. I've been feeling down for months, not eating because I don't have an appetite, not being able to sleep, losing interest in the things I loved - like drawing and painting, I've also had suicidal thought and have thought about sh. I told my mom that I want to go to therapy and told her a few of the things I struggle with for context (excluding the sh and suicidal thoughts) and she told me that it's just my hormones acting up and that it'll get better, to just deal with it. I don't know what to do. I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks ^^

I wish I had this knowledge before starting therapy. I really didn't know what to expect of the therapist or myself. When you don't understand the process it can be very damaging.

Hey, Kati. Can you talk about what family therapy is like in general and in the first session? I've done individual, but I'm about to do my first family therapy and I'm nervous about it, particularly talking about conflict.

Hi! :) I really love your videos, you're an amazing person ❤️ Can you make a video about 13 reasons why? I mean, about the 2 season. I'd love to hear your opinion about it :)

Thank you for this video Kati :) I have to say I've recently had my first therapy appointment and never in my life have I felt so belittled before. The therapist basically tried to talk me into believing I felt something else than I really did, would give me advice such us: you feel anxious - try swimming! and it made me feel really awful and I never want to go back into that office again. She didn't even care about any goals that I might've had coming there, and wanted to persuade me into believing that I don't struggle with things that I struggle with. It was such a mess.

I am sorry you had such a negative experience with your first therapy session. Therapy is all about you and you need to connect with your therapist in order to get better. Sometimes that means trying out a few therapists or trying different types of therapy.

Ugh that's terrible!! Unfortunately, not all therapists are good at their jobs, so know that you can find someone else who listens to you first!! xoxo

This is really great and clarifying! I really just wish there was some top 20 things to consider "working on" list so I'm not so damn overwhelmed to begin with! Ugghhh... :-/
