@@wingoreviewsboxingandmma3667 Socialism is any system where a non-economic entity exerts influence over the economy. By definition, every civilization that has ever had a formal government practices some extent of socialism. Taxation is socialism, tax cuts are socialism, regulation is socialism, deregulation is socialism. Laws are socialism. You cannot have a group with authority without them influencing economies. I think you may need need to work on your definitions of social and economic systems my friend because that premise can't work under a socialist system because the system demands that the extra resources I worked for be allocated to benefit others; such is the foundation of the schism between socialism and capitalism. And we were ready to die, just for a chance to run away. Many did. Can you even imagine standing in the queue for few hours every day, not to buy a new iphone, but to get a smelly piece of meat for your family? Bus to get kids to school? You dumb fucks, our children were going on foot for miles and buses were often so overcrowded it was impossible to get in. Free healthcare? Sure, but if you don't give a bribe or know someone important, you'l die waiting for your surgery. Can you imagine going to prison for telling a fucking joke? That's our experience. We're still fucked economically 30 years after socialism collapsed. Socialism, not communism. I like Jim, he's hilarious, but he's one of the dumbest mofos I've ever seen. Derek Lowe Look, I get it. “Socialism” has been successfully used to scare folks like us for decades, so why stop now, right? Here’s the thing, you’re not actually afraid of socialism. You, and I, and all of us, are afraid of authoritarianism. Authoritarianism can be delivered through capitalism, too (see “oligarchy”). Democracies can also deliver authoritarianism (see Adolf Hitler). Socialism isn’t a problem in England, Sweden, Denmark, and many other European countries. As Jeffries points out, Australia is a socialist country. It hardly looks like a dictatorship. Meanwhile, back in the US, the southeastern states of this country have a pre-existing condition called hurricanes. That’s ok though, because when hurricanes strike, the country bands together for these states to provide funds and other aid to rebuild and repair. That’s socialism. You know who kinda likes certain dictators around the world? President Trump. Just ask him about Putin, Duterte, Bolsanaro, and other dictators in power at the moment. Lastly, enjoy this bit of reading. I found it highly informative... m.dailykos.com/stories/2012/5/21/1093478/-A-Day-in-the-Life-of-Joe-Republican

Each department was paid by a private property owner to protect, and the owner was given a special plaque that stated that the house was under protection of a specific fire department. @@Travis_Marshall im living in a social democratic country and we are a free liberal democracy. What you need to you is: there are countless socialist movements in history which each had different theories on how to make a prosperous equal society. There where the syndicalists, deleonists, Reformists etc. But around 1900 a new socialist movements (the Bolsheviks) emerged in russia which declined a only on trade unions based revolution and favoured a more strictly organized party of revolutionaries who seized control of the nation until its industrialised enough for a democratic centralised government to set in. (If you dont know what democratic centralision is ask me). Lenin describes that really good in his book "What is to be done?. His movement was as i said different from mainstream socialism because while they still wanted a democracy at the end the were ready to combined more power in fewer people to achieve the liberation from the tsars. ( Russia was a police state at the time and dissidents were hunted down thats why the Bolsheviks couldn't organize themselfs like other way more democratic movements like the syndicalists for example.) But after the first world war the Bolsheviks succeeded while in all other countries the revolution got cracked down. This left the most authoritarian wing of socialism as the leader of the workers. After Lenin's death a power struggle made Stalin chairman ( which Lenin wanted to prevent by all means) which therefore brought the most authoritarian wing of the already authoritarian Bolsheviks in power of the Revolution. What followed was a crack down on all other democratic socialist movements that were left and gave us nearly a century of struggle between authoritarian socialism, fascism, Capitalism and what was left of democratic socialists. Now after decades of struggles the stalinists and fascists are dead and the capitalists have problems to maintain there grip on power as the workers are fed up with being sacked by the state and being betrayed by there leaders. Authoritarianism and Corrupt Capitalism have no more place in this world. Only a peoples democracy can help us. Today's socialists reject people like Stalin and look back in our Past to focus again on democracy. For only a democracy to bring freedom and socialism to end the class warfare can bring humanity in its future. ( I really overtook this but i hope you maybe get to see a other perspective now)

The first ever fire brigade was private, in ancient Rome, led by Marcus Licinius Crassus. His road to become one of the wealthiest individuals in HISTORY went something like this (from Wiki): "He took advantage of the fact that Rome had no fire department, by creating his own brigade-500 men strong-which rushed to burning buildings at the first cry of alarm. Upon arriving at the scene, however, the fire fighters did nothing while Crassus offered to buy the burning building from the distressed property owner, at a miserable price. If the owner agreed to sell the property, his men would put out the fire, if the owner refused, then they would simply let the structure burn to the ground."

Nick Bund wrote: "Under socialism, that state owns the means of production and is Australia that is far from the truth" No, that isn't socialism at all. Socialism is about the democratization of the workplace and economy. In the Soviet Union the state took over the all industry primarily as power play to deprive capitalists of power. But you cannot call it socialism, because if there is no democracy it is by definition NOT socialism. Nordic countries and Germany are much closer to the socialist ideal about democratization of the economy and workplace. The key idea is about giving workers a lot more power in the economy instead of having all the power over the economy sit with the capitalists. That is very much a thing in Nordic countries and Germany through union friendly laws which means historically 80-90% of workers have been part of a union. In Nordic countries and Germany 1/3 of company board members are elected by workers giving workers increased say over how a business is run. In Germany it is even better in the coal and steel industry where 50% of the votes are given to workers. Still both Nordic countries and Germany are mixed economies and not purely socialist. In a real socialist economy the workers would have had most of the power. That means voting rights would typically have to be 50% or higher in most companies. The difference between the Soviet Union and Nordics/Germany is that in the former radical socialists fighting a dictatorship got power through an armed revolt. In Nordic countries democratic socialists won elections in a democratic system, and began trying to create socialism through gradual reforms. It is worth nothing that both the Soviets and Nordic democratic socialists failed in ever creating socialism, but I would claim Nordics got much closer.

Why should the workers of a company get a say in the way a business is run. If you mean in order to keep the workers interests in check then why not use union s like we've had since the 1920's. @povelvieregg165
@povelvieregg165 4 жыл бұрын
@@pedanticchicken2117 > yet democracy is a form of government and socialism is an economic policy No, you are confusing socialism and capitalism. Capitalism is a description of an economic system only. Socialism in contrast is a political ideology, much like say liberalism or fascism. As a political ideology socialism does in fact not give any precise description of how an economy should work. On can imagine may ways of democratizing the economy. Different branches of socialism have different approaches to this. > Why should the workers of a company get a say in the way a business is run. The socialist view of this is that political and economic power is much the same. You cannot have real democracy if a tiny rich elite controls the whole economy. The US is a good example. Studies show it is an oligarchy. Why is that, given that people can vote in the US? Because the wealth is controlled by a small elite which uses that wealth to gain political power. Wealth can be used to control media, ads, finance campaigns and thus ultimately control the political process. > If you mean in order to keep the workers interests in check then why not use union s like we've had since the 1920's That is part of a possible solution. As I've said, socialism does not give precise prescription of how economic democracy is achieved. Of course union laws matter a lot. For instance in the UK and the US union legislation is a joke and hence unions are mostly weak an ineffectual. Very few are in unions in e.g. the US and hence there is not much democracy in the workplace. But if you go to social democratic countries you tend to find a lot more workers democracy. > The average worker is not smart enough to make good judgement for a company in terms of how it is run. That is a stupid statement. If workers cannot make judgments about how their company is run, how on earth are voters able to make judgments about how their country is run? Or how are jury members able to make a verdict without being experts in law? There are plenty of counter examples to your claim. Mondragon is a large company that has existed for decades entirely run by workers. All German coal and steel industry has 50% worker votes for the board. This has been since the end of WWII. Examinations of these companies show they are well run. What makes the different is not economic performance but propensity to outsource and shut down profitable business. Companies with 50% worker votes tend to make decision more favorable to worker employment. E.g. they don't end up getting moved to China. Keep in mind workers voting on the board, does not mean a steel worker is making high level financial decision for a company. Steel workers are instead electing competent people who know how to do that. > Also none of what you said is socialism It is. What do you know about it? I have been member of two democratic socialist parties here in my native Norway. I know what the party program is and what the history of democratic socialism is in my country. Do you have any first hand experience with socialism other than what you read in the news? Do you live in a country where one or more of your mainstream parties is a socialist one? I doubt it. You have most likely read about the Soviet Union in your history books and think you know socialism because of that.

Imagine writing this whole monologue and not realizing that “socialized” and “socialism” are different things. Socialism means the workers own the means of production; i.e. your job is a democracy rather than a dictatorship. Socialized programs can exist within a capitalist country (eg Europe, especially Scandinavia). That’s social democracy, not socialism. Socialism can look a lot of different ways but Denmark and the military are not socialist. This is a matter of fact, not up for debate, no matter how much liberals and conservatives try to redefine it.
@samvanderplas7619
@samvanderplas7619 4 жыл бұрын
That's saying socialism and capitalism are opposites, socialism as an idea or a construct basically says that the governments nr.1 priority should be the care and education of all its citizens and should fund public programs to help the people have enough to get by. The dichotomy you're thinking of are Capitalism vs. Communism, which are both ECONOMIC theories, socialism is a POLITICAL ideology, a country can't be both Communist and Capitalist, while a Capitalist market could be socialist, and a Communist market could be dictatorial.

The fact of the matter is that that is not how the term is used in the US If you analyse what the “democratic socialists” in the US by policy and the systems they point to as exemplars, they are clearly advocating for progressive social democracy. pretending that the term is used anywhere close to its original use is helping noone
@drewrobertwinter7648
@drewrobertwinter7648 4 жыл бұрын
@@badvideosto Yes I agree that the term has been massively manipulated in American political discourse, but that is a testament to the systems of propaganda. The rest of the world still uses the correct definitions, and socialism still has a real meaning (eg in the works of Karl Marx). By allowing people to redefine "socialism" as "social democracy" you are doing the same thing as redefining "liberal" as "left" and "social democracy" as "communist." These shifts are not just changing the meaning of words, but removing entire political categories from the debate. That is only useful for propagandists who want to confuse people.
@badvideosto

@@drewrobertwinter7648 Realistically that happened a long time ago. For a very long time everything that is left of vulture capitalism has been labeled as socialism. Remember when the Obama Administration enacted a right winf freedom foundation healthcare plan that was literally copied from mitt romney? Socialism isnt really being redifined now, that already happened. Rather they are trying to reclaim a narrative as a preemptive move. Claim ownership before th other side forces it unto you. The political discussion in the US is far removed from the actual labels and has been for a long time now. I would agree with you that a discussion based on more original meanings would be preferable, but is most likely unfeasible.
