Our first trip we picked up my mother in St. Louis, took her to spring training in Florida. After two weeks mom was ready to go home, we were in Huntington WV. Told her we had one more stop in Indiana, she gave me a look, so that day we drove 9 hours to get her home. Never again, we full time. So now when we make our plans for the season we never drive more than 3 1/2 hours. Being full timers we have that luxury of taking our time. We enjoy arriving at our destination and not feeling exhausted.

When I was in drivers ed in the early 70's they taught The Smith System, 5 Keys to safe driving. Key 1. Aim High In Steering® Key 2. Get The Big Picture® Key 3. Keep Your Eyes Moving® Key 4. Leave Yourself An Out® Key 5. Make Sure They See You® ater when I drove for UPS, they used and taught the same system. 54 years later, I still use these 5 seeing habits. As on OTR driver, I always took a break at about 2.5 - 3 hours and use the same times with our camping rig. Furthest distance driven was 610 miles, Tucumcari, NM to SW suburbs of Kansas City. Would not have attempted if our destination wasn't home. Thanks for covering this important topic.

Our longest trip was from our home in CA to DC then Kitty Hawk in the Monaco Beaver motor home we had at the time. What an AMAZING trip we had, no major breakdowns or meltdowns for that matter. Our kids were teenagers and we wanted them to see DC and the Atlantic coast. Another great trip was Yellowstone again another Amazing trip. A week was not long enough! Longest ravel day over 18 hours (up the east coast in one shot). Hit Traffic in every major city. Even the back ways were jammed. Never again. Now I am 8 hour driver starting around 5 or 6 am. When I stop most areas are in gridlock. Rest stops, well being old I get Miles Per Bladder so need to stop every 1 to 1.5 hours. Empty myself, buy road snacks (or quick meal), top off car's tank. If I feel droopy hit a rest area or gas station to get wake up food. Then a good night's sleep at the hotel and repeat. If I need to drive somewhere I can do 12 hours but am drained. Plus my car keeps me on my toes (26 year old Camaro).

As mostly Weekend Warriors, we rarely travel very far, but we typically stop for lunch and leg stretching once if the drive is longer than 3 hours. I also always top off at the end of a trip not just to be ready for the next trip but to keep condensation out of the tank.

We bought our Winnebago Adventurer in 2020 in California and drove it back to Florida where we live. We had looked all over for this model with the layout we wanted and that was the only one in the US during covid. So we flew out and bought it and took 3 weeks driving about 3-4 hours a day and stopping at campgrounds and Elks /Moose Lodges(we are members). We also stopped at several friends' homes and camped for a few days in their driveways. We are now on a cross country trip to see friends in WA state for a week and are now on our way home, again taking our time.

It wasn't in an RV, but the longest travel day for my husband and I was 15 hours. From the Poconos in Pennsylvania to Ellsworth, Maine. We did a lot of sightseeing along the way, which added the extra few hours that normally would have been about 11 hours. We had great conversations and listened to podcasts. We also plan future trips during our drive to keep us sane.

Fire on a 2019 29L Winnebago Last weekend. We were returning from a big car show in Ky from Al. On the way back, one of the cheap hydraulic lines to the leveling arms burst and the hydraulic fluid sprayed on the engine exhaust causing a fire. We had the hoses replaced and the mechanic said he would not have put these crap lines on his kids pedal car. If your folks have this type vehicle recommend inspecting these lines. We were very lucky no one was hurt. Expensive repair but no one hurt. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.

A pair of big rig truck air ride seats like the Legacy Silver was the "come to Jesus" moment for me. They reduced so much fatigue especially from those ill designed transition slabs from road to bridges. One trip on I95 entering South Carolina northbound with these seats will erase any doubt of the $900 each you spent on them . The only downside is you lose the swivel function.

Good tips, guys. As a recently retired truck driver, I would recommend checking the weather forecasts during your pretrip planning and again before you leave. Winter weather, thunderstorms, and especially high winds can all be extremely dangerous. Also, purchase a commercial vehicle atlas as a backup and know how to use it properly.

As a CDL mine longest trips have been up to 10 hours (legal limits) many times driving solo for work from California to Calgary, Canada (4 days at 10 hours each day), in a 45' Prevost motorcoach. I've done this several times back and forth transporting buses deadheading (empty). Not what I recommend but what I needed to do as I was on a time line. I chew gum, run movies (I have seen many times and know well) on my DVD, not to watch but to listen to and visualize in my head as I can hear it. I also will eat sunflower seeds that helps like gum. I will listen to upbeat music I can sing loudly to. I also do breathing exercises. Breath 5 counts in through your nose, 5 counts out your mouth. I tend to hold my breath without thinking and this type of breathing gets more oxygen to the brain to keep me alert. I will stop when I need to pee (I try not to drink too much) or eat of course. But sometimes it's a hard to find a safe place to get my big rig to get in and out of for a short stop. I am a good napper so a 30 minute (I can fall asleep immediate) and wake up refreshed. I do talk hands free to all my friends and family. Not really a coffee drinker. I don't like to drive in the dark especially to places I've never been .Plus I am 69 yrs old woman. I'm a newbie RVer and plan to drive for the most part in daylight hours.

Driving across the country back in the day, we used our CB radio constantly. One late night, a semi driver called us out on the channel we’d been cross talking on, to tell us to pull over at the next rest area just ahead and drink coffee and take a break. He’d seen our driver getting woozy and saved our lives, perhaps. At least he taught us there’s almost always coffee up ahead at night and to take advantage of those truck stops and rest areas. Things can get very hypnotic at night…bless you, good buddy.

Oh yes, I already anticipate what others are going to do. Always looking around and knowing who is in front, behind, and on my sides all the time. When I was younger, my husband and I would drive and make a 12 hour trip from Arkansas to New Mexico a couple times a year to see family. That was in a car not an RV and going faster than an RV should go. I would not do that today even in a car. There are more cars and trucks on the road. We would switch off drivers every time we stopped for gas. That helped a lot back then

Love the tips. Missy takes care of all the snack ideas for our trips. The longest trip we took, November 2022, was unexpected, 15 hours to Florida trying to avoid the projected route of a hurricane and of course it changed its route and we got hammered. We had a spot to stay in north east Georgia but the hurricane was expected on shore in that area that evening, so we took a right drove west then south right into the outer bands,... Good times, LOL. Luckily for us we had the Liquid Spring installed that spring. No way I could have driven that far without it. For me I'm all about music, i throw on the 70's, 80's, Classic Rewind or the Bridge on SiriusXM and I'm good to go.

Our longest trip is to a dog show in the Northern California Redwoods. With all of our stops and driving slow, half the trip is in the Redwoods, it's about 8 hours. Not worth splitting it up into two days. It's a pain to stop and setup for one night. I only drive 2 hours and then stop for fuel, walk around, hit the bathroom and perhaps eat/drink. Meanwhile my wife walks the dogs. I do this so if we cannot fit into the planned gas station - then the next one is, at the most, 2 hours away. I use the Trucker's Atlas, google map's street and stat views for the stops. Making sure the gas stop is doable. Having stops every 2 hours also helps focus and my back. Other trips are under 3 hours and we stop half way into the trip just to break it up. Me and the dogs got to pee about the same time. We do not do all that checking on the motorhome because if it is going to break it breaks at the campground or when we arrive back home. Not kidding, the first motorhome, except for one time, always broke down in the driveway as soon as we return from the trip. The second one has minor "issues" on the coach side while at the campground that needs addressing back home.

20 hours. I was driving from Denver to Florida with the largest U-Haul truck. At Oklahoma City, wife (in Denver) called with news that my younger daughter was just taken into emergency. So I had to turn around and "race" back, taking the truck right to the hospital. But I did have my older daughter with me to keep hitting me and squirting me with cold water. Cold water on the head and down the back of your neck works pretty well. (My little girl is all cured now!)

Many great driving tips when traveling in an RV! We always try to preplan the route and our stops. That said, our return from our last trip in Asheville, NC, we rerouted due to massive construction on I-26 that runs from Columbia, SC up to Asheville. Road conditions and traffic were terrible. The different route was a bit longer, but much better. So sometimes you have to be prepared for unexpected situations, you have to be flexible. I think that new Garmin with live traffic info would have been a really good thing to have! And riding motorcycles in my youth has ingrained defensive driving into me, you always need to look ahead and anticipate what someone else might do, and keep your head on a swivel, constantly checking your mirrors.

Our longest drive while towing our 5er was almost 11 hours. We had to be at the final destination for an appointment the next day. Unfortunately, we had to detour because of road closures and snow. :(

I use RV Trip Wizard by RV Life for long trip planning. However, my wife falls asleep almost immediately.. It's actually a form of motion sickness. I have found podcasts help. We've done 11000 miles in two days so 10+ hours per day. I stop every 2-3 hours for a minimum of 15 minutes just to stretch.

Just finished a round trip WV to west coast. Had a couple of issues (home AC went out, RV problems) decided to blast straight home: TX to home. A 1,195 mile jaunt completed in 24 hours without naps. Do NOT recommend😳.

9 hours, but that's pushing it a whole lot. 6 hours is doable, but if we have no agenda, 3 hours, stop for 3 nights, explore area then hop over 3 more hours in another area.

We enjoy your videos and realize you are well meaning, but perhaps you should not give your viewers nutritional advice. Ribeye steak is an excellent source of zinc, selenium, niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. And also a good source of iron. Do not take my word for it though instead, I suggest you may want to reasearch those stats yourselves. I agree it is a good idea to be well hydrated.

My longest road trip was 12 hours! My college roommate and I were driving to Florida. We were supposed to split the driving. I had worked a 8 hour shift at the hospital before we left. We had planned to leave around midnight and I was going to drive until I got tired and she was going to take her turn driving. She only worked part time, so she was supposed to be packed and go home but take a nap before our trip. Well when I got home, she was still packing and had not taken a nap!! I was NOT happy!! We got on the road about 1am! I drove until about 3 am and I asked her to drive for a while. She said, ok, let me get my glasses. Well guess what?? She forgot her glasses!!! I wanted to beat her!! We had to stop many times, get coffee, get some food, and get out to walk around. A few times she started to fall asleep!! I said oh hell no! If I’m awake , so are you!! We aren’t friends anymore! 😂😂 I wonder why?? 🤔🤔🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂
