DUDE! I had the exact same experience you described at the beginning of the show. I moved to Hanoi to teach English and at first glance, I dreaded what I got myself into, then everything changed with literally my first bite of food. Great show!

I really felt relaxed as soon as I got there. I was coming pretty much straight from India though with only one day just outside Bangkok to catch a connecting flight so my sense of reality was probably pretty warped at the time. The food is something else though. Such an amazing country.

EGG COFFEE, KEBAB BANH MI AND BUN CHA - YES! Was there just this February and I miss it already. I spent about 48 hours in the city but this video is still a revelation, in so many ways. Hanoi was my first ever trip outside the PH (alone too!) and I think it was a good call, since Hanoi did feel a little closer to home but also very different from Manila. Food was the highlight of my trip - so cheap, yet SO GOOD and there was also being mistaken several times for a local. Great video as always!

What i like about Vietnam is the place gives you a choice. The main streets of tourist hubs are not on local rate, you can survive in a cheap budget. Certainly having the unique, genuine experience. Contrary to other neighborhood countries, when its a tourist area, you have no choice but spend and the tourist district is not a first hand experience of the culture unless maybe when you spend some time more
@brucenolan43846 жыл бұрын
Just getting the feel for Viet Nam, cities like Da Lat and Hanoi don't seem so touristy as some of the well-traveled and publicized spots and still hold on to the culture of Viet Nam. I never would have thought Hanoi would be a place of interest and then people (like you) are saying it's one of their favorite places. I will definitely have to do a see and tell. Thanks

I enjoyed watching them because you have such a clear voice, right volume and very detailed and most of all very informative. Vietnam's GDP is growing at roughly twice the rate as the USA's GDP. Yes, Vietnam's economy is largely dependent on both China and the global economy, but it still is growing twice as fast as the USA. Given these numbers, I am unclear as to how the communist party is blocking development.

Received notification yesterday on my mobile, wanted to watch it immediately. But I refused myself the pleasure as I would only want to enjoy this with good speakers and a big HD screen. Traversed Tagaytay hurriedly moments ago, braving the day-from-holiday traffic. Reached home, threw stuff from the trunk to the bed, wifi on, connected the TV, boom. Hanoi Overnight, here we go. I totally agree on Hanoi and Saigon being very different from each other. the same elements are there, but man - what a world of difference 1160 kilometers make. And you described it perfectly. Been to Vietnam twice but still learning a lot from your vids. You always hit the spot and get the message across in a contemporary yet familiar kind of gritty poetic way. Another awesome vid, man. Cheers to more Overnights! PS 18:56 I can still see the effect of the balloon in you. LOL Last part, always my favorite when shit gets real. When the culture, food, music, arts boil in the same pot and create the real taste and feel of the country you visit. The Solenn surprise insert is both hilarious and eye-soothing. ;)

Second, u can have egg coffee with $1.5-2, i highly recomment u try it at Giang coffee, if u r a fan of coffee, there r a lot of other must-try Vietnamese coffees, such as milk coffee, bac siu (in Vietnamese,it's bạc sỉu).Finaly, it is not bad, but u shoud be careful when travelling by bus. Clearly one, if not The Best, 'vlog' I have visionned on Hanoi, a place I am currently evaluating as as 'expat' retirement places to be worked on besides Thailand or Indonesia; only the first two being high on my list for Asia as I do not feel that the Phillipines are as easy to embrace, even though I have enjoyed travelling through it in 2004 for thirty days as I needed to be in that part of the world for my work. This is a very nice Hanoi travel guide. I tried both the Bun Cha 34 and the Banh Mi 25 you recommended, and it was two delicious and tasty experiences. I told one of the owners (this little man who actually spoke very good english) at Banh Mi 25 that I saw this place on a KZbin travel guide watched by over 200k people, but he had never heard of it. He asked me about the name of the video which I wrote down for him on a piece of paper. Thanks to that he gave me a free water. I asked him how many pieces of banh mi he sells every day (from 7am to 7pm), and his answer was freaking 500! That's unbelievable. We're talking about an income of €500-600 a day just for the banh mi, which should be really good for a street food restaurant in Hanoi. One funny thing is that I wasn't alone going directly from Bun Cha 34 to Banh Mi 25, so I guess I'm not the only one who's taken advantage of your travel guide. Thanks for the tips!

Great job on the overnight in Hanoi Erwan! You are always on top of the latest places to eat so when i go back to Asia I know where to check out next. Thank you! When you mentioned the deep fried donuts in this video, the origin behind them is really from China, which is called, Youtiao. It is normally accompanied with congee (rice porridge) for breakfast in Chinese culture. This deep fried donut has spread throughout Asia and you can find it in almost any Asian country now. In the Philippines it is called, Bicho. Or in the Visayan region, they call it "sia-koy," usually twined like a rope. Reference to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtiao

who are these uneducated people? banh mi is inspired by the French baguette (pate is one of the most famous ingredients in banh mi and it's French you idiots) Pho is influenced by China what the fuck!!! The flavor is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COZ THE INGREDIENTS IS FUCKING DIFFERENT FROM NOODLES IN CHINA! the only thing common between Pho and Chinese noodles is they are both flour based with soup same can be said for ramen/beehoon/mee in other asian country

Agreed QUAY is from Hongkong (taste and texture entirely different) but you said"the bread and noodles are Chinese influenced". that's YOUR word fucker. you said Chinese and now you say Hongkong LOL Try to educate yourself for once before you say anything is China influenced. if your answer was "Hongkong influenced" you might considered as true blood Vietnamese but having said what you said, you are a BETRAYER. THẰNG BÁN NƯỚC MẤT DẠY CHẾT MẸ MÀY ĐI
@evienoel31277 жыл бұрын
vesper malfoy Sorry, but Pho is really both influenced by the Chinese, French and it native region. The noodles and spices are imported from China (Guangdong and Yunnan, which is located in the Southwestern). Eventhough Hong Kong is a Special Administrative region in CHINA, it is run by the Chef Executive, currently is Leung Chun-ying (so it almost like an independent country). Cantonese (Yeu) are just one of the five main dialects in China, though, most people their would just consider themselves Hong Kong citizens, in real life they would still be considered Chinese. The noodles and spices are imported from China and the French popularized the eating of red meat. I'm Vietnamese, Chinese and French American so I should know something about the history. And next times, instead, of telling others that they're uneducated, check your understanding of history. Maybe others just have different beliefs and understanding on historical events, and I respect that. P/s: Watch your profanity.
@haylievu7 жыл бұрын
I don't give a fuck about profanity. I am 1/4 Cantonese I can speak both pu tong hua and Yue yu. and of course Vietnamese. and I hate people saying i''m Chinese. We don''t consider ourselves Chinese. Why do you think you need to educate me about who is the executive of HK the"Special Administrative region" though? That guy is uneducated saying that Quay and you tiao are the same thing and Pho is chinese influenced and he could have said it''s Cantonese influenced.ANYWAY, hey American, that''s irrelevant to you. Stay the fuck out of my face

So far, this is my fave episode! It gives more depth of the culture and food. I love it that you're interacting with the locals. I think the episode/s resonates well when you're the only one in it. I mean Jay-B - Jaypee (IDK) provides comic relief but could come off distracting. Just my humble opinion anyway.

If you pronounce "thit bo" incorrectly, it may mean your daddy's meat; which doesn't sound very good.
@dennisravago88377 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats the problem with Vietnamese. Comprehension depends on the stress of each word. If you mispronounced it they wont understand it...Of course, there is no daddy's meat...Vietnamese should also start learning how to comprehend using situations or sound like...

***** The vietnamese should be the one to understand the context not the foreigner who tries to speak vietnamese
@dennisravago88377 жыл бұрын
***** The foreigner is the one who is speaking vietnamese so the receiver of the message should be the one to take the contextual meaning without the right tonality sadly vietnamese are just tonal based without considering the context
@dennisravago88377 жыл бұрын
***** My point is context comprehension should be from the receiver not from the speaker. And unfortunately most of the vietnamese can't do it. They are tonal based not contextual

It goes to show that travelling is a good learning experience. Normally some (not all) well to do kids back home would never queue and doesnt even mingle unless you are from the same background, but when one travels you learn about culture, people, life etc, that when he or she goes back home they are richer with knowledge and humanity and therefore snobbery to the less fortunate doesnt even exist in their vocabulary. One thing I noticed about Erwan is you can take him anywhere and he will fit in. One thing to note is that the advantage of coming from a better off background afforded him to enrich his character... if that makes sense to you. Anyway its a positive attribute.

You should go to Australia and try the Vietnamese food here in Sydney. i reckon it's even better than the food in vietnam lol. Like I'm a Vietnamese but I'm even surprised when i first tried the food here :p We have a big Vietnamese community in australia :D
@tiffinypham387 жыл бұрын
lucas Nguyen lol, i dont think so mate. I have been here in Sydney for few years, but foods in Vietnam are still da best for me n all my friends who i know. 😀😀😀😀
@lucasnguyen55717 жыл бұрын
everyone has different opinion mate. When I went to Hanoi I didn't enjoy the food as much as I expected. Even the taste of Pho in Saigon are very different to the one in Hanoi. Most of Vietnamese food in Australia are southern flavor so if you come from northern Vietnam then of course you might have a different opinion
@tiffinypham387 жыл бұрын
lucas Nguyen at this point i agreed with u. I went to Hanoi in 2014, i tried "bun cha" in famous restaurant, it wasnt taste good as i thought. But the Trang Tien ice-cream was nice and foods in Sapa were good too. According to what u said above, viet's food in Aus is better than Viet's food in north of viet instead of vietnam. Am I right?
@asclol23687 жыл бұрын
I have been in Texas USA for 12 years. In terms of variety of foods and food safety, no doubt it is way better here where we have 1 mil+ from all provinces and regions in Vietnam. Central and Southern foods seem to keep their originality simply because most Vietnamese immigrants come from those areas. Northern foods, however, are not as authentic as what we have back in Vietnam (pho Hanoi, bun rieu mien Bac, bun oc, banh cuon Thanh Tri, pate, banh my...). But again, it depends largely on what kind of taste you got introduced to and hooked with at first. That would set your opinion and preference when it comes to Vietnamese foods.
@BananaCakeGirl20236 жыл бұрын
Luke Aloha agreed. I think because SYDNEY is so multicultural and made up of people from al backgrounds who make authentic food (and not just tailored for a western consumer taste palate) the food in Sydney is phenomenal.
