What to Do When You're Suffering | A Monk's Perspective
In honor of Mental health awareness month, I wanted to bring awareness and give a general overview of mental health along with buddhism. Both of these can be seen as models that help to address change and suffering. I hope learning about both the east and west helps to give you more tools. For anyone who is struggling with mental health, please feel free to reach out for support. #monks #mentalhealth #buddhism

Not so good.. I am talking with a therapist and trying to get back on medication. I am reading Thich Nhat Hanh's "The Miracle of Mindfulness" and doing some meditation.. I find that my back hurts and I always fall asleep during meditation so it's hard to keep practicing.

Perhaps this can be helpful to someone. Remember, sad feelings will eventually lift. You are not your emotions. Try to remember that moods will come and go. Have the strength to allow them to exist and know they’re not permanent. Take them a day at a time and accept that “this too shall pass”. God bless all.

Ven. Nick, I am at PaPae and have two of your books. This place is beautiful and amazing. Just as the city, so many temples one after the other. There are people from all over the planet. The monks are amazing and you were the reason why I came here. I am here like a lot of the others, looking for a way to stop suffering. I’ve practice for over 10 years, but need help with some issues(like family). I’m here for the extended retreat and have no time restraint. Much Metta. 🙏🙏🙏 Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.

"See things the way that they are and not the way that you want them to be"- Niccolo Machiavelli. This was the way that he felt government officials should view opponents and opposition. However, I took it and applied it to issues involving people who were unhealthy for me regardless of our relationship and/or how long I may have known them. In the end, people will either add to you or take away.

I’m struggling with my mental health right now. Anxiety & depression. And at this moment, I feel like I’m living inside my head instead of the real life. Everything that has happened in my daily life feels like a dream. I can’t focus on anything. When I tried to stay focus, my mind wanders around and creates their own scenarios. I feel like I’m detaching away from the real life. I just want it to stop. I want to feel happy & content again. I want to feel alive again. I tried doing meditation but my mind always wanders around. And I got tired trying to bring back my focus. But I will still continue practicing meditation & mindfulness because I know that I need to practice to control my own mind. Whoever reads this, please pray for me and to the others who also suffering from mental illness. 💚💚💚 And to Ven Nick, you are an amazing human being. I found your videos while searching for more info on mindfulness and I’m glad I stumbled upon your videos. It brings me peace when listening to your videos. I hope I can live happily and feel at ease like how you & your brother monks live.

I am having a rough time at the moment. I don't feel understood by some important people in my family, it's like we have a hard time connecting. This is painful and sometimes makes me sad. Also, I have been seeing less my friends since the pandemic started and I feel a bit isolated, as I work from home. Sometimes it's hard to find motivation and that makes me feel anxious or confused. The good news is that I am learning to regulate in a healthy way, by taking care of myself, sharing with my partner and friends and taking some steps to feel more connected. But it takes time and sometimes it's hard. Thank you for your kind words.

I have terrible anxiety and depression that comes and goes. I'm seeing a good counselor and listening to your videos as well as those from Yogney Mingyur Rinpoche. I have a photo of him giving a thumbs up on the display of my phone to remind me to meditate. Silly, but it helps. I don't want to keep wasting my life with anger from fear (and other things under that iceberg) and being too afraid of everything to live. I appreciate your unique perspectives and telling people it is okay to seek help.

This was great-really something for me to think more about. I love the "stop doing bad, do more good, meditate" simplification. :) I had a video idea if you were interested...could you (or someone you know) speak about being a Buddhist who also identifies as a member of a faith group (Christian/Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/etc.)? I feel like the perception is that you have to be one or the other, but you can be both, because Buddhism is not a faith, but a way of life.

Thank you so much. All you said is so true for me, included the last part as I feel sort of "shy" to seek help. Hoping that starting to meditate 5 minutes a day will help me to relieve my pain, depression, anger... In these past year I discovered myself having bad thoughts like hatred with lot of anger too and this shocked me as I've always cared about others, and what's more my body followed as I've just found out in my blood test results that I've got something wrong in my autoimmune system... this surprised me less. It's so obvious but could I change enough to cure my mind and my body? I don't know but I definitely need to start having my best, positive and caring thoughts for anyone and myself, I've ever been able to ... Thank you

Nick, thank you for another great video. By the way, I am still doing the 5 mins mediation and committing to a year since you made that video way back when. Some days the 5 mins is easy but some days the mind would not quiet down. I just want to let you know again. Thank you.

This comes at just the right time for me... I'm working on changing things in my life that aren't working. But that takes time and luck and in the meantime I'm struggling to stay in a good place mentally. I'm (finally :) ) going to give meditation a go. Hopefully that will help me stay positive even when things feel hopeless sometimes. Thank you as always, Ven. Nick.
