Perhaps this can be helpful to someone. Remember, sad feelings will eventually lift. You are not your emotions. Try to remember that moods will come and go. Have the strength to allow them to exist and know they’re not permanent. Take them a day at a time and accept that “this too shall pass”. God bless all.

Ven. Nick, I am at PaPae and have two of your books. This place is beautiful and amazing. Just as the city, so many temples one after the other. There are people from all over the planet. The monks are amazing and you were the reason why I came here. I am here like a lot of the others, looking for a way to stop suffering. I’ve practice for over 10 years, but need help with some issues(like family). I’m here for the extended retreat and have no time restraint. Much Metta. 🙏🙏🙏 Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.

"See things the way that they are and not the way that you want them to be"- Niccolo Machiavelli. This was the way that he felt government officials should view opponents and opposition. I’m struggling with my mental health right now. Anxiety & depression. And at this moment, I feel like I’m living inside my head instead of the real life. Everything that has happened in my daily life feels like a dream. I can’t focus on anything. When I tried to stay focus, my mind wanders around and creates their own scenarios. I feel like I’m detaching away from the real life. I just want it to stop. I want to feel happy & content again. I want to feel alive again. I tried doing meditation but my mind always wanders around. And I got tired trying to bring back my focus. But I will still continue practicing meditation & mindfulness because I know that I need to practice to control my own mind. Whoever reads this, please pray for me and to the others who also suffering from mental illness. 💚💚💚 And to Ven Nick, you are an amazing human being. I found your videos while searching for more info on mindfulness and I’m glad I stumbled upon your videos. It brings me peace when listening to your videos. I hope I can live happily and feel at ease like how you & your brother monks live.

I am having a rough time at the moment. I don't feel understood by some important people in my family, it's like we have a hard time connecting. This is painful and sometimes makes me sad. Also, I have been seeing less my friends since the pandemic started and I feel a bit isolated, as I work from home. Sometimes it's hard to find motivation and that makes me feel anxious or confused. The good news is that I am learning to regulate in a healthy way, by taking care of myself, sharing with my partner and friends and taking some steps to feel more connected. But it takes time and sometimes it's hard. Thank you for your kind words.

I am a Christian. I also have a mental illness. In one episode, I left my parents house without clothes, without my cellphone, and even without shoes and walked naked to a hospital. I told them, in my psychosis, that God told me not to love the things of this world. I was given paper scrubs and sent to a mental institution for two weeks. I left everything, including the people I love the most, my parents, for what God told me. Did I practice non-attachment? I believe I did. This is one extreme thing I did as a result of my mental illness. Thank you for speaking on this subject. It is much needed.

Ven. Nick. You have enough videos that you could transcribe them into a multi-volume set of books. Good for you. You mentioned the defilements of anger, greed, and delusion, but as you know there are others. They are the thinking mind, impermanence, attachment, and wanting. I know that thinking can lead to confusion, frustration, and depression. I know that impermanence makes everything illusive because it is changing. I know that attachment is painful because becoming unattached to it is painful. I also know that "wanting" is wanting something that I do not have above all else, but also it is not wanting what I do have but cannot get rid of. For me to alleviate such suffering requires mindfulness, which is paying attention to what I put into my mind and to what I take out of it. And, incidentally, chanting, such as "om mi padme om," keeps my mind from thinking.

I was raised very closed off to “Eastern religions,” being given the vibe of them being something to be avoided as a Christian. I’m agnostic now but I’m certain, to paraphrase what you’ve said elsewhere, that we can all learn from each other and still be good… whatever we see ourselves as. I’m really glad you’ve decided to take to KZbin, it’s helped me a lot, and I intend to explore more and hopefully find a teacher and community through one of the temples that are… somewhat close to me lol.

Ven Nick. Thank you for this informative video. So, many misunderstood Buddhism and Buddhist philosophy. They think Buddha is a “bald, happy man.” The Dalai Lama states Buddhism has 3 aspects. First, Religion is for Buddhist only, so do not try to convince or confuse people who are non-Buddhist. The Second aspect is Psychology. The Third aspect is knowledge. He says the Buddha said not to take his words for it, but to do “your own investigations.” With your background both as a Monk and a Licensed Therapist, I hope people will listen to your wise words. You, other monks, and other Western therapists have helped me to learn to cope with my sufferings. Not everyone have to go to a Brick and Mortar therapy. For me, listening to proper sources have helped tremendously.

Hi Nick. I would say that currently my mental health is great. Fortunately (I truly feel fortunate) I have always been good at dealing with "life", and the curve balls that it constantly throws. It takes a lot of negativity for my mental health to become compromised. I typically meditate to help stay centered and focused. I treat people how I want to be treated and I stay away from people/situations that I know have the potential to become a negative experience. One of the biggest resources I use are your videos, and videos like yours. Thank you for the great stuff my friend, I hope you're enjoying Alabama! 🙏👍🏻😁

This was great-really something for me to think more about. I love the "stop doing bad, do more good, meditate" simplification. :) I had a video idea if you were interested...could you (or someone you know) speak about being a Buddhist who also identifies as a member of a faith group (Christian/Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/etc.)? I feel like the perception is that you have to be one or the other, but you can be both, because Buddhism is not a faith, but a way of life.

Hi Venerable Nick. I dont know how you do it, but your voice is just calming. I dont even need to watch the video, just listening to you. Continue with your good work. :) I wish you peace and happiness.
