There is no such thing as a “fake” model. Just models manufactured in different ways. One may be an “authentic Games Workshop model”, but a re-cast is still “real”, just less valuable. It’s like a kit car of a classic car. It’s still real, it’s just not “authentic”.
@Obergfreighter5 ай бұрын
It's Games Workshop IP, I genuinely could not care less if it's a bootleg. It's not 'fake', it's just a figure, even if it is the worst recast I've seen in a looooong time.. I don't think there's any sort of moral dilemma here so long as you don't pretend it's the genuine article, particularly when you consider just how unattainably old, expensive, and rare this long out-of-print figure is.

Honestly when it comes to recast / knockoffs I see no moral dilemma to them if they fit under the following criteria. 1. The mini is out of production and games workshop has no intention of bringing it back. These minis are a good example as you said they were a limited edition run. 2. The only way to purchase it is through second hand at a ridiculous price. For example just saw one on eBay for $300.
@EDSKaR5 ай бұрын
That is a similar price to what I've seen before... This particular set had an official run of 1000 sets, and comes with a certificate proving it's real (my real set has a cert) Currently if one person wanted this diorama, there are a few around but are very expensive, I'm sure when the next wave of Ghost fans comes along the supply will dry out.

I’m not sure that there’s much of a moral dilemma, especially with a model so old. Whose profit is being stolen by the existence of these models? Games Workshop sure isn’t making them anymore, so they no longer profit from them. Are we devaluing the original models? Not really, those models still exist and it’s pretty easy to tell they’re real because they’re made of metal. Considering how much you likely paid for the originals, I think you’d agree that’s not happening. Unless you’re trying to pass them off and sell them to someone as ‘real’, because that would be fraud. Recasts have been around forever, like you say, they’re usually shit quality. Though I’ve honestly had better recasts from China than original models from Forgeworld which is a bit unfortunate. What should you do with them? Whatever you want, as long as it’s not literal-actual fraud.
@EDSKaR5 ай бұрын
Yea, I kinda agree with all that.
@paulfarr75 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'd just keep them tbh. Now you've got a diorama set, and ones to game with; that if they get knocked about a bit, you'll not be too bothered about.

It's out of production so I doubt GW would care and cast in a different material so I doubt it would be mistaken for a genuine collectors item which would be the only issue anyone should be concerned about from a buyers standpoint.

Before the Horus Heresy relaunched I got into it and was bummed a lot of the vehicle doors, pauldrons and other bits were discontinued so I did buy recasts for the legions I was making to make them the way I wanted to. Then HH relaunched lol and I bought the official stuff going forward along with the occasional out of production recast part. I'll buy official if its still in production.
@duncanmcdane3885 ай бұрын
I got burned a couple of times to by discovering the model I purchased was a recast. Softer detail, multiple and illogical moldlines, a different kind of metal, holes, incomplete formed parts etc, you know the things. And what I do with them? Easy, use them for exercise painting, use them for status or simply chop them up for scenery or conversions. I've paid for them in good faith, I'm not throwing them out on behalf of GW, I'm not selling them on, I just find some use for them. Same as models with lead rot, I don't throw them out, I clean them as good as possible and then they'll be used as ruined statues or on scenery pieces. It's a hobby, we use and or cannibalize whatever we can find. But the recasting thing has stopped me buying used classics online at the prices they usually are going for. It's not fun anymore, it's not just a couple of quid, it's serious money, including the shipping part of it and if you're unlucky customs fees.

@EDSKaR5 ай бұрын
Agreed, the quality of a cast or recast is based on the skill of the caster, not weather it's a recast or not. the generational loss of quality is tiny compared to the loss of quality of a bad cast. The ones I painted in this video are clearly not from a professional caster, just a fan who wanted a spare set I imagine.

You didn't make it. You did't buy it. You're not selling it. There's no dilema. Nothing wrong with simply possessing a forgery, only in trying to profit off it at another's expense. Far as I'm concerned, you could even sell it, as long as you made it clear that it's not authentic, and priced it accordingly. I remember when people were losing their minds over recasts of Confrontation minis, back when. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some higher quality recasts of those now. People want silly money for the originals.

I've personally recasted pieces to use for basing as I wasn't going to waste an entire guardsman's torso just to drill it out and have empty flak armor when I could use it to make an actual guardsman, so I cast the bit and drill out the recast which is worth nothing However I find it odd that whilst I'm perfectly fine with 3d printed & recast remakes of oop bits like hostile environment helmets from forge world sets of legs or torsos of the classic guardsmen for actual figures just feels wrong to use leading to figures where i had even made legs for my spare torsos getting broken up and the plastic put back in the parts bin Really, i think so long as there's no deception it's fine but for my personal preference i refuse to use fully recast minis (again, probably will get recasted or 3d printed forge world cadian upgrades because not only is it not sold anymore but I'm not spending $300 for ones on ebay)
