Thank you for this review. I am currently a member of club pilates. In the beginning, I had the same experience with instructors. I was about to cancel my membership. Then, I decided to switch instructors. The instructor I have now is the absolute best. She is engaging, she uses a mic, she explains thoroughly, she walks looking for form, and she corrects me when my form is not correct. I love pilates now. I've gotten so much stronger since switching instructors.

So sorry you had this experience. My Club Pilates is very different. There is a brochure explaining each class type, as well as a posters that explains classes & class levels. I stayed at the Foundation level (1,0) for 6-7 months so I could learn the method, equipment & terminology. Once I started taking classes with the Master Trainer for our club, I advanced quickly. I now take level 2.5 classes - which is called "Mastery". It can seem slow at first to someone who thinks all workouts should leave you breathless & achy. That isn't so. Pilates is about controlling the body through the movements - building the stability, mobility & flexibility needed to function well. I do agree that there needs to be more consistency in the teaching, instructor to instructor; club to club, but in all fairness that is very difficult to control. Part of taking Pilates is finding a teacher who resonates with you. Also, the apparatus is designed to assist your body to perfect your form & make doing the matwork achievable. Mat is the hardest form of Pilates. Joe Pilates liked to brag that even the best toned athletics couldn't do his mat class in perfect form for the first time. It's designed to be difficult.

Wow…6 months as level 1?!? It’s great you have an organized club. The turnover of instructors at the club I tried may have contributed to my frustrations. I didn’t know there were “master instructors”. That’s pretty cool! Good luck on your fitness journey. ❤

Thank you for this video. I joined with no knowledge of Pilates based on them saying it was for all fitness levels. First class went ok and instructor was nice. Second class was awful. I don’t know what I’m doing and it was like the instructor was gaslighting me even though I told her it was only my 2nd class. She didn’t want to help with any modifications then told me at the end I needed to schedule a private class that was free to get some modifications and help. That would have been nice to know when I signed up. I left very discouraged. But I’ve got this 3 month thing I signed up for so maybe I can get some benefit. Will need to find a good instructor is key!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Modifications and additional explanations during class is so necessary and helpful to new students. Once you find a great instructor, you will feel more comfortable. I hope it works out for you! Let me know if you continue after the 3 month period.

Pilates is a practice. If it is not difficult you are doing it wrong. The springs on the reformer can aid OR make things more difficult, speak up if you need more work. If you would have stuck to foundational classes you would have learned your favorite stretch. Pilates is meant to be slow, controlled movement for the most part. If you can't hold neutral you shouldn't push yourself into more advanced classes. Jumps could use work... Your heels need to come down on the jump board. You are meant to land toe, ball, heel. If the heels can't land gear the machine out. As an instructor please quit telling others to skip the foundations class, it is dangerous if someone's not ready and you could be ruining the class for the practitioners that are ready along with ruining the instructors flow of the class because now they have to dumb it down so to speak.
@drajhoy

At my location the foundations class was garbage. After visiting another studio, it was clear that the instructors need additional training. Mat Pilates suit me better . And all of the instructions you gave above would have been great to have during my class-the instructors were just lazy. Definitely agree Pilates is a practice-and I’ve found what works for me-At home, on a mat with Move w/Nicole and Eleni Fit

@@drajhoy it makes me frustrated you had instructors that came off as lazy and not giving enough queues and just how you were put off by the experience. I apologize for them. I love teaching and if someone walked away from my class feeling they needed the gym afterward along with not feeling happy after class, I have failed as an instructor. But it's wonderful you have found an instructor and routine that's works for you! You are right, instructors should be speaking almost the entire class. I was not trained by Club Pilates teacher training but teaching is my passion. Wishing you many years of health and happiness!

I tried a free class from them and it was really fun! My instructor was great and very energetic and informative but sadly the classes are way out of my price range. The other thing I didn’t like was that I got so many calls from them in the weeks after to join even though I said I didn’t want to. Edit: also, they weren’t open about the prices. They only told me about it at the end of the trial class.

@@drajhoyI think it’s because each studio can set their own pricing based on location? I think this is the way it works with franchised studios, like pure barre, YogaSix, barre3, etc.

If you're new don't take 1.5 ... I did start at 1.5 as I didn't understand the numbers . I would do 2 back to back classes to feel a workout however I've been doing it for almost a year and now the 1.0 classes are even hard. If you feel it's too easy - your positioning is wrong. It's slow yes but it helps you focus on proper positioning. And again they will give you options as you're supposed to have taken the 2 classes before jumping to the 1.5's. Mat pilates is actually harder for beginners. I started with winsome but reformer is great for injuries (I had Planter fasciitis) and the instructors for reformers were very hands on to help me properly positioning my body. As I hadn't realized I wasn't doing proper posture on my own in all areas. Instructors do very I love the personalities of all my instructors I do have one who talks about her day but her workouts are intense and in 2 months of taking her classes I've seen such a huge difference. Puck the instructors and classes that work for you. I did more flow at one point but now I've switched to all the cardios and controls.now switching back to flow and some cardio. Just depends on what my body needs at the time. I also love the suspense class but I need energy for it and I do mine early. Always let them know if you have injuries they will give you adjustment variations. I couldnt bend my.knees either and my instructor jist let me know to do smaller ones and bend onky as much as I could (same with lunges) now I can jump no issue (not so much standing so much just yet) my gym does have mics. We also have a free intro class. I'm ready to start using more weights. I recommend Windsor pilates. Absolute fave !

@drajhoy wow so many typos I can barley read what I wrote. I was in the middle of falling asleep. Haha sorry for the typos. I mean take the 1's* not the 2's. Took me 6 months to realize I skipped the beginners classes where they explain things (example bridges I'd feel in my knees. In the 1's they explained pulling ur toes towards u if you don't feel it in the targeted area and how you should not be feeling it in your knees 🤦🏻‍♀️ oops) but yes I don't know if they explained numbers in my intro class ? I space out and stop listening 😬 but it's a very me thing if I skipped that. It was so full I just took whatever class had a spot and that's how I ended up there. 😂

I just signed up for a free month trial of class pass which does offer Pilates. I am nervous about Pilates , so I did sign up for the free 30 min intro class, before I sign up for a Pilates class. So far from what I’ve seen on class pass the club Pilates near me only offers the 1.0 classes no 1.5 or 2.0 which I’m not too concerned about at the moment since I’m only a beginner, but I wonder how I’ll feel once I get more practice. Anyway, thanks for your video! Very informative :)

I live in New York City and am a member of Club Pilates in both NYC and Madrid. I started in September and absolutely love it. My sister and older mom are absolutely loving it now too. We all thought the intro was so helpful, and all started at different studios/instructors. I think your review is your own experience, and honest. But also encourage folks to keep going because I absolutely ADORE Club Pilates and it helps my Mental Health everyday. My mother also started with a lot of learning like you had to do. Even with less experience. For example, if you do Pilates at home, I am surprised you don’t know what a butterfly stretch is…
