anyone else have any misfiring issues after installing is38? I am running a eqt stage 2 tune w stock hpfp, and I have basically every other bolt on, the car runs fine just abt until I really floor it and then it sounds like a different car and starts misfiring after a few pulls. I also don't think I was careful enough taking out a cam shaft actuator and now have a check engine light for it and 1 of them cost 95$ so be careful when doing so. -Streetcamgti

I back the scientific fact that an AWD wagon is definitely cooler than an AWD hatchback! I bought an Alltrack a little after you started this channel and I do plan on tuning and adding the IS38 turbo. I have read and watched a lot of content and gotten a lot of different answers. So my question to you and everyone in the community is what is ABSOLUTELY necessary to install on my car BEFORE I install an IS38? I’m trying to budget myself and buy only what is necessary, but I also want to do this right and maintain the reliability of my precious MK7.

This is obviously pretty late but I just added an IS38 to my 7.5 Sportwagen. I have an IS38, a CTS intake hose and turbo inlet pipe, RS7 spark plugs (not that I’m concerned with using factory spec) and an APR tune. That’s it. After owning a 15 WRX and throwing tons of mods at it, little and big, trying to get the most out of it I’m excited to do less. Heading to work one morning I got behind a stock looking MK7 GTI and chased him around a left then right onto a long straight industrial road. My 315 AWHP WRX got left in the dust. This experience has informed every choice I’ve made with the Sportwagen. I will be doing an intercooler but as far as power modifications this is as far as I plan to go. It’s stock quiet, factory feel and my gf doesn’t even know I’ve tuned it, let alone added probably 100hp. But if I ever laid into it to merge on the highway with her she’d know something was up. It’s exactly the subdued monster I wanted.

Early on in my search I was wondering if there was a nice twin scroll option as the header seems set up for one from factory but I don't think you can beat the value and performance of the is38 at least without having to upgrade every other part of drivetrain...

"While you're in there..." is there an exhaust manifold (aka header) upgrade that could be done? This is something that I NEVER see mentioned in performance upgrades on Golfs, so I'm unsure if it's just not typically done because it's a PITA (like front sway bars), or if there is just generally no performance gains from it because of the extremely short run from the exhaust ports to the turbo.
@jasonmay6565
@jasonmay6565 3 жыл бұрын
There really isn’t much of a header on these cars, and it really doesn’t make a difference, so that’s why you don’t ever see it discussed. The turbo basically comes right out of the block

Intake manifold with MPI is def an upgrade, I think I’ve seen some Aluminum ones. The exhaust manifold is in the turbo and there are other options other than IS38 but then you run to fueling issues.

Plug in the Wastegate actuator connector before snugging the IS38 to the head, the connector is rotated compared to the is12-20. Also be careful of the top coolant port adapter on the head, the plug is plastic, it maybe best to have a replacement on hand in case you snap it. IMO if you’ve installed the DP, the Turbo swap is just as complex just maybe a bit longer. What’s next after this? HPFP upgrade? MPI + Intake cleaning DIY? Too bad unitroic doesn’t support MPI.

@H2oToGoWH
@H2oToGoWH 3 жыл бұрын
You can run the is20 on a jb4 and won’t void warranty and avoid having to tune it so your car won’t be flagged if you’re under warranty, as for the power difference it is noticeable especially at the top end as the is38 can carry the power a bit longer, only downfall is spool time. The only thing I can strongly suggest for an is38 is upgrading the fuel pressure regulator from a gti or an r, though the 1.8 can handle it, it’s definitely a safety net and less ware on it.

@karstgeo7290 3 жыл бұрын
It's there but not as much as you may think. I've had each on my 4Motion Sportwagen complete with logging and Dragy times. The 12 certainly is the fastest spool but of course dies off up top fairly quickly. The 38 and 20 are closer but again the 38 keeps on pulling up top.

@DadWagon
@DadWagon 3 жыл бұрын
All tuners suggest/require upgrades intercoolers, intakes and Downpipes. I assume there are reasons beyond just making money. At a minimum I’d assume at least going with a golf r components may be safer. Is12s we’re utilized to save cost - so it’s safe to believe that vw saved costs on the IC and down pipe as well in non r models. With the cheapest components or used items you’re lookin at $2500 usd. My setup with tuning is closer to 3500
@andreasford274
@andreasford274 Жыл бұрын
I know I'm about a year late to answering this one, but if it helps, I have personal experience: Is it safe? Yes. But does it perform? No....well kinda. I blew through two IS12 turbos (wastegates stuck open, known issue). First one was under warranty, second wasn't. My independent shop happened to have a used IS38 with about 10k miles on it, offered it to me for half of what a replacement IS12 would've cost. I was low on cash at the time, so it's installed with zero additional equipment, just the APR IS38 tune. When it's 65 degrees or lower outside, it's a massive upgrade over the IS12, especially from 3,000 rpm up to 6,000. But running it hard for any length of time and/or at high altitude (like 10,000 feet, I'm in Colorado), it'll suffer at the top of longer climbs at highway speeds. I believe they call it heat soak? I have about 50k miles on this IS38 so far, zero issues with repairs. I'm very likely doing this again when I buy a younger Alltrack, but when I do it next time, I'm adding additional parts, bare minimum a better intercooler, very likely cold air intake, and possibly but not likely a downpipe.

I'd be surprised if you're able to do it without pulling the downpipe, the leverage you need for removing the oil line on the bottom of the turbo (assuming yours is as stuck as the one we did) just doesn't seem possible from the top side.

@Zharsergey 3 жыл бұрын
@@danh1807 What about leaving the line attached to turbo and remove it from block instead?
@danh1807
@danh1807 3 жыл бұрын
The line on the block is even more buried by the downpipe than the line on the turbo, from my recollection it would be harder to get at. We also tried removing it from the block when we swapped a turbo, but found that the factory line was just as stuck at the block as it was at the bottom of the turbo. Enough wiggling the turbo around and enough curse words, and we eventually got the line to free up on the bottom side of the turbo.
@jasonmay6565
@jasonmay6565 3 жыл бұрын
You do not have to remove the Downpipe. It can be done by unclamping it and pulling back. The flex section will allow some movement. You may have to unbolt one or two nuts but that’s all.

Copying my comment from ShopDAP install video on the bottom line triple square bolt (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHzCY6ybdqqomK8): I found a good way to approach it: 1. take the long M8 bit from ShopDAP's Triple Square Socket Set and a 10 mm ratcheting box end wrench. 2. Use the wrench as an additional guide at the bottom of the socket 3. You can see the bolt from the front of the turbo, so use your fingers to connect the bit while actually looking at it. Go behind the actuator rod (as shown on the video) not in front of it.

I'm super excited I found this channel. I've been a volkswagen nerd for the past 24 years. My first car was an 88 golf. I currently have a mk1 cabby project that I am swapping a built 16v 9A into. My daily (a 2013 scion xb, dead reliable but quite boring) was totaled a couple weeks ago (dashcam video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4fQdIehe6x3rNk). I always like the golf sportwagen since they came out, and I thought one would make a great daily. I picked up a 19 GSW 4mo DSG last week, and it has me SUPER pumped. This is my first forced induction car, and I'm really looking forward to making it a bitchin dad wagon of my own. This video in particular has me drooling over the thoughts of swapping in an IS38 turbo. Do you have any thoughts on keeping my daily reliable while having some fun with it? I'm insane about maintenance as it is, and I want my cars to last. Thanks for the content!

Sorry to hear about your scion. I had one for a few years, and absolutely loved it... so slow... but so simple and reliable. Super stoked for you and your GSW. You're going to love it. 3. thoughts on keeping it reliable while having fun - 1. Try a stage 1 tune first. It requires nothing but software, and will add a ton of fun and spirit to the drive. with that and a rear sway bar - that might be enough to keep you happy. Try it out and go from there.
