i wanna throw in a critical and common oversight about "the middleman" (dispatch in this case): while yes profits aren't at their max because they are there in the middle, part of their cost is covering insurance premiums and waivers you would otherwise have to cover yourself independently. you also have to source your own work and calculate your own costs to charge accordingly. i personally am semi-retired and have my hand in a lot of cookie jars with a mixture of dedicated lanes, gig apps (i was dispatchs 3rd interviewee), direct book clients, and recycling/waste removal. with these things combined i have recently entered 6 figure territory; most of this involves "middlemen". i'd argue that there are 3 types of people: the 2 you mentioned and the 3rd being someone that sees any and all oppurtunity (middleman or no) as exactly that: oppurtunity.

about dedicated lanes btw: i dont know if it's part of dispatchs plan (i still need to watch the webinar) to allow you to dispatch (no pun intended lol) your own driver to cover the lane but this is something i can absolutely do with my other contract. if i want to appoint someone to that route full time and take what would essentially be a brokerage fee to do it, i can. this can allow me to have a stream of steady revenue and do direct booking and/or recycling at the exact same time just for example.

I think that's both good, and bad that they want to go that route. Good for the people who are already on the platform, and have probably built some good relationships with customers. Gives them a chance to lock in some stability. Bad for the people, like myself, who aren't on the platform, and have been sitting on the waiting list. The preferred drivers Will be taking away some solid work from the newcomers. I agree though, if you want to be a business, be a full-fledged business and be the captain of your own ship. Cut out the middle man, and lost revenue. I have met a few drivers though, that make quite a good living off gig apps, and are happy with it.
