Dricus du Plessis is the new UFC middleweight champion after defeating Sean Strickland by split decision (48-47 x2, 47-48) in an unforgettable title fight.
It was an historic night for du Plessis, who became the first ever South African-born UFC champion.
On a lesser note, he also silenced his sceptics who believed a longer fight would favour Strickland given du Plessis had previously not gone beyond four rounds prior to Sunday.

I never doubted DDP having followed him before he got to the UFC. No one really respected his path to get into the UFC and for some reason, people kinda felt his wins over Till, Brunson, and Tavares were a fluke because he looked so unorthodox and looked like he was "tired" (which I never actually believed). So it was really only the Whittaker fight that people took him seriously and so maybe it does make sense as to why there's been such a crazy "unexpected rise" in the eyes of most people who didn't know who he was until then.

I have never even watched a full UFC match, yet here I am trying to analysie elite UFC athletes. Drikus is inspiring a nation, and that is good for future of the sport. In my non-expert opinion, Drikus fights in way that feels very SA: Relentless, physical, stubborn and calculated, driven by pride/intense expection to win. I dont think a sloppyish/unorthodox style is necessarily a SA trait, but a kamakazi, I dont care about my body or tiredness / Ill fight with whatever I have attitude, is. I remember watching the netball world cup last year and even the SA girls went into a sustained barbarian mode to graft out some difficult wins.
