He didn't even mention the massively bloated and over-designed websites that look prettier than are actually functional, and take way too long to load, or the pop up that asks for your email for their shitty newsletter, or the pop up telling you to disable your adblock (sometimes optionally for some reason?), or the fact that the content is covered up by a shit ton of ads, or that every result you get on search engines is just corporate advertising and government propaganda, and sometimes they show a pop up demanding that you pay or donate to see that shit, and that speech on social media is now insanely restrictive and you get shadow-banned for posting wrongthink. The internet fucking sucks now.

The saddest bit about this is that the data we lose isn't usually because of our own incompetence, but of the companies' willingness to give it away
@davidwuhrer6704
@davidwuhrer6704 7 ай бұрын
Also because of those companies' incompetence. Good IT security costs money for the sheer number of people who are just going to tell you not to use anything by Cisco, Intel, or Microsoft. It is much cheaper to hire the minimum of IT staff to play compliance theater and buy the equipment from the friendly consultants you have tax-deductible lunch at the brothel with. Maybe an intrusion detection system or two, cloud hosting, a host of payment processors, and of course a reverse proxy service that has more downtime than your Docker containers. So -if- when something goes wrong it isn't your fault, you've been compliant with all CYA requirements, and increasing the attack surface and the number of moving parts is just good economic sense. (Everything costs more and takes longer, plus there is zero resilience, but think of the synergy effects of having fewer direct employees!)

Yeah, if any app or website asks for you to accept their privacy policy try actually reading it lol the privacy policy isn't there to keep you safe it's so they can legally gather every bit of information on you and sell it to undisclosed third parties, and when I say every bit of your information I really mean every bit of your information that has ever existed on the internet and the privacy policy even gives them access to your camera and microphone and they can use your face,image or voice for whatever they want, the funniest part about this video is Ryan is all worried about a data breach when they're already gathering and selling all of his information

100% accurate. Only thing missed is how many sites also log you out after so many minutes like banks and most applications at my job. Only allowing the essential cookies is always the way to go, but a lot of websites make it intentionally annoying to only choose the essential ones.
@davidwuhrer6704
@davidwuhrer6704 7 ай бұрын
It's misguided anyway. The reason they show pop-up banners is because they are legally required to disclose how they are tracking you and who they share the data with and for what purposes, and they are legally required to get your consent before processing your data. And the default option is legally required to be opt-out. Opt-in has to be a conscious decision, not the default. Which all sounds reasonable, you would want to know who is violating your privacy and why. But the thing is, they don't need to show you any banners _because the default is to not track you_ and there is no requirement to tell you what they are not doing. They show you the banners in the hopes that you are stupid enough to opt-in, and then they blame the legislators for their own being annoying. As reasonable as the law seems, the technical implementation is bass-ackwards. Cookies are part of the header, not of the content, it is up to the user agent - the web browser - whether to store them or ignore them. So the browser can show you how websites want to track you, and the browser can block that, and the browser can remember your policy once and for all instead of each website setting its own separate cookie to indicate that you don't want any cookies. Of course what the browser doesn't know is for what purposes those cookies are in the headers. As annoying as those cookie banners are, they have three benefits: They show you just how much surveillance you are under that you would never think of or expect; they demonstrate how broken the website is on a technical level and why you should turn off JavaScript and disable CSS animations; and even though they are legally required to make the content accessible even if you don't opt-in, the banners are an excellent reminder not to go to that honeypot site, ever.
@AhsimNreiziev
@AhsimNreiziev 7 ай бұрын
That's not even mentioning the "Legitimate Interest" crap. While only accepting the essential cookies should (legally) either be the default or at least as easy as accepting all or some of them, there seems to be an exception for a "Partner"s "Legitimate Interest". Problem is, companies can decide entirely for themselves what their "Legitimate Interest" is, so accepting the "Legitimate Interest" cookies is basically equivalent to blindly accepting all of them. The biggest problem with this being, some sites force you to scroll through a list of 5000 vendors, and manually disable the "Legitimate Interest" cookies for each and every one of them separately. And some sites make it *_even worse_* than that, where you have to click on each vendor individually to even _get_ to the "Legitimate Interest" checkbox, meaning you can't even scroll through the list and click to disable each "Legitimate Interest" box mindlessly.
