For those interested in 90s alt rock culture, I recommend checking out Skunk Anansie, a band that got screwed by industry racism. They had 2 black band members, including the lead singer Skin, a queer woman with a phenomenal voice. But when their first album came out, alt rock stations thought they were an RnB band because black people were on the cover, and record stores put then in the RnB section. If everyone in the band had been white, they would have been huge. They had hits in the UK, but never broke in the US. Check out the tracks "Hedonism" , "Weak" and " Selling Jesus", which they performed in the film Strange Days.

Just because they weren't popular in the USA doesn't mean they weren't huge.

The segment on SA & R* Culture in the 90s was so hard to listen to because it shows how much society hasn’t changed regarding the protection of women… BLACK women especially. I often hear the same regurgitated discussions in new cases and it really makes me angry! It’s hard not to be angry when I think about all we’ve had to endure and continue to endure.

Hey Im genX, listening to MC Lyte, TLC & Queen Latifa right now actually so i get it haha... but there's def been artists following them up over the years. Especially in R&B- got H.E.R., Kehlani, Ella Mai, SZA... Rappers like Megan Thee Stallion & Snow Tha Product carry on some queen latifa vibes- Anxiety & Plan B from Megan's 2022 Traumazine hit deep, Snow's always a turn-up like Waste of Time. Jean Grae, Tierra Wack, Rapsody, & NoName also warrant way more attention. Cant replace Missy Elliott, but there's some really talented women playin with genres like Janelle Monae & Princess Nokia... some artists that've been around since we were young have really evolved- like Beyonce's grown from radio pop to a whole run of genre-bending concept albums. There's not many groups anymore, i miss Salt'n'Pepa & TLC. Theres a few like Oshun, but its mostly just solo artists on occasional collabs now (hey bonus shoutout to Doechii & Rico Nasty, that Swamp Btches collab EP was 🔥

This video is making me try to think more about women in Canada of the 90's that aren't Celine and Shania. Susan Aglukark, an Inuit singer hit #1 on the Canadian charts with her song "O Siem", which was awesome. It's a nice song, I wish more indigenous music cracked our charts like this. Jann Arden hit pretty hard up here in the 90's. Deborah Cox! How could I forget her! K.D. Lang was going strong too. Bif Naked was rad as hell. Alanis Morrisette kinda dominated up here for a good while as well. Michie Mee was tearing it up still too.

Aileen Wuornos is one of the few serial killers that I actually feel sorry for. Her life was doomed from the start. I don’t agree with what she did, but I just think after constantly being abused by men that one day, she snapped.
@lovethyself744Ай бұрын
I feel the same. They were WRONG to execute her. Her case was not criminal but political and it said a LOT about women's treatment in this society. The thing that shocks me the most is, the condition of s3x workers today hasn't much changed. Wuornos was white, but look at how her white society treated her? Imagine if she had been a black woman? I feel so sorry for Wuornos they messed her life up
@lovethyself744Ай бұрын
and her horrible gf betrayed her so many times. She stood no chance. Everything went against her. SMH they wanted to make an example out of her and I am happy Patty Jenkins did her justice with Monster. She put things right back in the context.
@lovethyself744Ай бұрын
The guy who made her "snap" was Richard Mallory, a convincted serial rapist. Wuornos said he t0rtured her for many hours and then she managed to free herself and sh0t him. I read her description of what he did to her, and I should not have done it. I totally understand why she snapped. She should have been sentenced to life in prison because she had become too dangerous and her reality was altered from the psychosis. She did NOT deserve the death penalty

One thing to add when it comes to the Riot Grrls & Monetizing Feminism sections that I feel should be added(to an already amazing video but this video is 2 and a half hours long so makes sense you couldn’t include everything about a decade lol) is Courtney Love(who in some ways, can be seen as an Azealia Banks of the 90s although more successful and better received) and her Band Hole(going to go on a bit of a tangent here.) Courtney, contrary to popular belief, was not a member of the Riot Grrl scene(she actually wrote a song satirizing the ironic conformity of the scene called “Olympia”) and even alleged to have said she hated Punk Music but she did write songs with feminine themes a lot of Grunge Acts didn’t sing about set to a Heavy Grungy Noise Rock backing(she literally said in an advertisement for people to join the band “I want to start a band. My influences are Big Black, Sonic Youth, and Fleetwood Mac.") while before evolving into more polished yet still heavy and abrasive sounds with Holes succeeding albums. Courtney especially is a good living sum up of many off the issues you discussed in this video. She herself came from a horrible childhood with a negligent Mother who abandoned her, a shitty father who drugged Courtney with LSD when she was a toddler and a row of changing stepdads, and an autism diagnosis at a time when autism was less understood now and especially less for autistic girls meaning she often misunderstood social cues. Eventually, as Courtney got older, she went to Juvenile Hall for shoplifting, entered foster care and and then became a sex worker(and even almost possibly became a victim of trafficking). Later on while she was in college, she started to dable in music and acting and even led an early version of Faith No More and was in an early version of Fellow Grunge Band, Babes in Toyland(You also mentioned Courtney and the band when you touched upon Kinderwhore in your fashion of the 90s Video). Eventually, she started Hole and they released their first album in 1991 to acclaim, a week before Nirvanas album, Nevermind, came out. She first began garnering hate when she started dating and then married Kurt Cobain because his fans thought she was “controlling him” and “ruining” his music, especially since Courtney is known to be very outspoken and abrasive as a person(both good and…let’s just say at times bad to say the least). It was Even rumored that Kurt had secretly written songs for Courtney(which wasn’t true obviously but it was a way to undermine her talent as a woman). It wasn’t until the Infamous Vanity Fair article came out where it was alleged she used heroin while pregnant with their child which later caused CPS to visit the couple when their daughter was born & take her out of their home for a time, causing a lot off stress for Courtney and Kurt who were already dealing with a of mental health issues, Heroin addiction and for Kurt, chronic pain. So while all of this happened, Hole was making their second album, Live Through This. A lot of the songs were extremely personal with the albums themes being about Fame, Courtney’s deep Insecurities, her experiences with Sexual Assault(such as when crowd members at a music festival SAed her when she tried to crowd surf), Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Courtney’s Suicidal Ideations, Drug Addiction, Her and Kurt’s relationship, and Courtney’s motherhood at a time when these issues weren’t being discussed from a woman’s POV in such a harsh unforgiving manner. Eventually, when Hole released their second album in 1994, it was the same week Kurt died of suicide after escaping rehab after Courtney tried to stage an intervention for them. both of which Courtney(and the public too) wrongfully blamed herself for to the point people started making conspiracy theories that she had pushed Kurt to suicide or even killed him herself. Around this time, Holes new bassist had also passed away from a Heroin Overdose so with all of this, Courtney went further into her heroin addiction to cope and toured(which was a horrible decision to do), exacerbating her emotional and mental health issues because of a public image that stripped her of any deserved empathy and made her out as a Black Widow. And Courtney, like many individuals covered in this series, is a complex human being and as much as she is a victim, there’s a reason she has a controversial reputation from this era and that’s due to feuding with a lot of figures in the Alt-Rock scene of the 90s including Tori Amos(Professional Widow was “allegedly” written about her), Trent Reznor(Starfuckers Inc. is about her having dated a lot of Rock artists in the 90s after Kurt’s death, including Reznor himself after Courtney allegedly sabotaged Trent’s and Tori Amos’s friendship) and even the other members of Nirvana(I’ll Stick Around by the foo fighters).(BTW She even feuded with Gwen Stefani who later wrote Hollaback Girls as a diss track so yeah….. There’s other stuff beyond the 90s she’s had issues with but this is sticking to the 90s. She also got into acting too, garnering a Golden Globe nomination for her role in The People vs. Larry Flynt with Woody Harrelson and acclaim for her role In The Man On The Moon, furthering her popularity. Eventually, Hole released their next album in 1998, Celebrity Skin. The album was produced a lot more slick and polished compared to their last albums and more power pop sound although still grunge influenced and based in Alt-Rock. The themes of the album, laden with references to T.S. Elliott’s work, are(unsurprisingly) about the manipulative & predatory industry of Hollywood, Exploitation of young girls by the media and their idols, dysfunctional relationships where one person tries to save the other to varying results(Northern Star is about her then boyfriend Edward Norton saving her from Kurt’s Ghost + other songs on the album about wanting to save a partner from addiction), death(Dying is about Kurt’s death), grief, twisted lyrics relating to sexuality, the public’s perception of Courtney and Courtney’s suicidal ideations(“Reasons to be Beautiful” literally starts with an announcement that Courtney hanged herself). While the album was critically acclaimed and performed better than holes last album commercially, the band wouldn’t last long as they’d eventually dissolve in 2002 amid infighting among Courtney and the other members and other issues relating to a Disastrous Joint tour with Marylin Manson. So TLDR: Courtney Love as part of her band Hole became a well known controversial figure due to her fashion statements, her actual statements, her marriage to her also famous husband Kurt Cobain and her music & lyrics that often fought back against a culture that wasn’t accepting of a woman being as outspoken and aggressive compared to her male peers who were lauded for being “Authentic” & “Emotional”(in a “good way”) for the same behavior she displayed in real life and her music that indebted her to conversations around Third Wave Feminism and the topics both Courtney & the movement discussed at such a momentous time for Feminisms Third wave while also often picking fights with other famous music artists of the time too and often winding up in the news for her addiction and arrests.
