I thought it was made pretty clear in the movie that the engineers were running from a physical thing. You look over your shoulder at something in pursuit of you with the expectation that you will be able to physically see it. No one looks over their shoulder when running from an area of breached containment while fearing some invisible pathogen. Obviously, one of their "weapons" got loose and cornered them. End of story.

I agree. I hoped for something intelligent and I thought the film was dumb. The 1st scene wherein the astronaut scientist is poking and making goofy sounds at some tentacled life form set the tone. No scientist or explorer getting off a rocket in another galaxy would approach an alien environment this way. The film was just fucking dumb. It was hyped as some sophisticated prequel to Scott and Gigers comic/film. But it was laughably dumb and fell far short, despite all the nostaligic earnestness for the 1978 film where no one cud hear you scream.

I’m inclined to believe this theory as well. With the possible addition of time travel. Maybe David perfected his Xeno Queen, with time travel capability and stopped the Engineers from fulfilling their mission by releasing the Xeno on each juggernaut. All for Elizabeth Shaw who never got her answer. Maybe David discovered time travel behind the mural and created a time loop. Had he not, Earth would have been successfully wiped out. It would then make him God, Crestor and saviour of those he loved and despised. It’s no secret that Ridley is obsessed with AI. My offered theory may be a little on the incredulous side, but it’s nothing that hasn’t already been done before in sci fi movies.

When David activates the hologram you hear at the very beginning of the recording you hear some sound resemble the Deacons roar or scream. So they could be running from some sort of Deacon creature. The Deacon came from the engineer so it makes sense

I can imagine the Creators using the black goo and I would really, really like to see what that would look like. Up until now, we always saw the black goo being exposed to humans or engineers by accident, randomly mutating in a very chaotic way. But I suspect that there must have been a "correct" use of this substance. The creators would have the potential knowledge and technology to not only randomly create a monster, but to properly weaponize it, maybe even retaining some sanity or control over the thing that they created. As you said in the video, a weapons testing facility would have had countermeasures and likely some sort of military presence. So for the creators to be successful in breaching the base, they would have to have had more than just animalistic monsters. There had to be some sort of order to the chaos the black goo unleashes.

MrMartechi Yes!, I really appreciate your comment about the Creators "correct" use of this substance- I immediately thought- what if with their knowledge and technology they injected or ingested the goo or some form of it to prolong their lives or live forever; sorta the opposite of Engineers use of black goo as a weapon of deststruction, the Creaters harness a healing factor that repairs damaged or aging cells. Tonight for the 1st time I come to realize that the Engineers have the exoskeleton/suits whereas the Creators do not. But like in the vid at 2:56 I see the elder Creator has alot of darker skin (head, cheek, chin) and dark veins showing? Could it be that Engineers evolve to use the black goo externally and Creators evolve to use it internally? Could this further address the 2 faction dichotomy? Perhaps, the Engineers were running from an adult xenomorph, as I discovered there is art work that illustrates just how huge the creature is born from an Engineer, they're 3 times the size, that's a massive creature to deal with, however, a dozen Engineers should still be able to deal with it, since they're combat and military types.

My theory is the xenimorphs are not engineered, but rather the engineers used them to create the black goo, and adapted their dna to have a xeno type of exoskeleton as a spacesuit. I think a xeno got loose and did what they always do. The black goo didnt seem to be a problem until the android unsealed that door. Who knows the whole story until the studio makes up its mind what it wants.

Here's my theory: 2000 years ago, some very hungry Engineers passing by Earth on a space voyage decided to get some 'takeout' food. They swung low over Central America and beamed up some enchiladas and frijoles being offered on a sacrificial altar by the ancient peoples there. Putting the food in stasis, they hurried back to their home base on LV-223. Ravenous & excited to be eating the delicious-looking food, the entire base population tore into the meal. Afterwards, they sat back & relaxed, sated and content. Six hours later, Montezuma's Revenge hit......BAD. There was only one bathroom facility on the base, and realizing their plight, the Engineers all made a mad dash for it. Unfortunately, there were only four toilets inside, and the first four Engineers to get to the bathroom, sealed the door behind them. The Engineers outside, unable to release their bowels, suffered diarrhea explosions, some explosions tearing through their chests, some blowing off their heads. After hours on the toilet, the four surviving Engineers recovered. They deduced that the Earthlings had intentionally offered tainted food to their gods, the Engineers. Enraged, they decided to destroy all humans on Earth. But being groggy from their ordeal, they mistakenly programmed their hibernation capsules for an undetermined sleep period. 2000 years later, the Prometheus landed on LV-223, and the rest is history.

Theory: The Engineers we're running from the Black Goo substance. But it wasn't a simple breach because they were after all wearing sophisticated suits that was probably intended to protect them in such a scenario. It was sabotage. When the human crew arrives eons later they find that pretty much all of the Engineers are dead. Save one, however. Why would one Engineer be spared while all the rest perished? Because he had planned it. He sabotaged the rest of the crew, murdering them for his own reasons and placed himself into hypersleep to survive the aftermath of what he had done.Why sabotage the rest of the crew? We know that our DNA is very similar to there's because they used their DNA to create us. And ultimately this would mean that perhaps our way of thinking was very similar. Maybe he had succumb to greed of some sort. After all a ship full of weaponized black goo would be very valuable or extremely powerful. A warlord of sorts amongst his people and a significant threat to others. Or maybe he was an activist who planted himself aboard the ship to insure the Black Goo never reached its intended destination and could never be used for its intended purpose.

Nah I think he just managed to get into stasis, as he was essentially the captain of the ship and on the bridge during the incident, so decided to survive so there'd be a direct account of what happened whenever he was found. There was sabotage though. Probably some of their leaders wanted to destroy the earth for killing engineer jesus, and others wanted the earth to be given a second chance, since it was still an experiment that resulted from the deacon blood, which was sacred to them, so even bad results from the deacon blood could be seen as intended consequences that must be beared, kind of like how people believe suffering and misfortune is god testing them. So there was probably hot debate about it among their leaders. I think the true purpose of seeding life on planets was to find a way to be able to procreate again. They knew the blood creates something similar to themselves, but basically strips away all of their biological engineering. So they chose to seed planets similar to their homeworld in their early development, hoping that eventually something would evolve that resembles their original early non bio engineered forms, which they can then use to recreate their civilizations ability to procreate, or create hybrids by mating with them. The engineers don't have the ability to procreate with each other, but that doesn't mean they are sterile. That may be what we saw on the engineer world that David destroyed. They weren't engineers, but rather, just another seeded planet that evolved something closest to engineers, and the engineers were guiding and preparing them to advance to their level, to replace the engineers and continue their civilization. In effect, since they could no longer procreate, they needed to seed a civilization that would be no different than if they had procreated, so they could impart their traditions and teachings and technology on them, because the engineers may live a really long time, but they knew they would eventually die off. As long as the seeded civilization resembled their original state before they took bio engineering too far, and as long as they followed their way of life, then they would see that as their civilization continuing, just in a somewhat altered form, and with mistakes of the past undone. And the mistake they were trying to undo was at some point engineers lost the ability to procreate in an attempt to increase their life spans. Maybe it didn't even happen at first, but eventually after a number of generations, they realized genetic changes were occurring that made them unable to procreate, but by the time they realized it, it was too late, and they didn't have what they needed to undo it. After all, for the engineers, 5000 years was nothing. It was like a single year in comparison to their lifespans. So imagine how much things happen in that time in their civilization. Information would be lost and forgotten. If you can't remember what you ate last month on this day, imagine trying to remember something you did 5000 years ago. It would all be fuzzy. So it would be very easy to lose information relating to their original genetic form, making them unable to clone themselves. In fact, they may have genetically programmed themselves to be un-cloneable, kind of like encryption for DNA, because of some point in their past making them philosophically opposed to cloning, and since they clearly had a lot of genetic traits, it might have been a security measure to keep people from being able to create clones of leaders and stuff like that. After all, when you live in a society where even basic technology is based on bio engineering, you need some security, otherwise bad actors could do all kinds of nasty stuff, making stability impossible. So they probably did some genetic alterations that essentially irreversibly encrypt their genome, while also keeping it from being further altered by additions (which is why they can live for 300,000 years, because they pretty much stopped all mutations that would normally age them). And so with this, they could not repair the damage when they realized an unintended consequence of all their genetic engineering lead to eventually become unable to procreate.

Hey Mr H, I'm posting this after Covenant was released, obviously, but what I want to say is this: There's a lot of dissatisfaction among fans about how Ridley Scott didn't make things perfectly clear in these movies. But I have been enjoying the hell out of all the different translations of what everything could have meant. A whole mythos is developing based on the extended fantasies and questions put forth by you and many others. I hope they do one final movie, but I think illustrated books are going to deliver this thing for everyone eventually. Keep up the good work.

Based on the mural, they've clearly created a xenomorph and throwing in the fact that Weyland Corp is obsessed with studying xenomorphs since they are the perfect bio-weapon, Im imagining that the Engineers are creating Xenos to perfect their bio-mechanical technology and there was an outbreak of not goo but rather facehuggers. Ridley Scott called their ships "bombers" because the idea was you would drop Xeno eggs on a planet and wipe out all biological life. Then you can come back 10 years or however long it takes xenos to starve and you have a clean planet. It also explains why Paradise is "quiet". Xeno weapon did what it was desined to do. Kill everything while leaving the planet undamaged for later colonization.

Mr H Reviews Only reason I think that the "Black Goo" isn't an issue for engineers is: 1. The dead engineers in promethus all had holes in their chest (chest bursters) 2. Their suits would most likely not be susceptible to direct bio attacks 3. There are alien eggs in the trailer, suggesting they're well beyond just having black goo based mutations 4. Theyre shown to be using and handling black goo for hundred of millenia. Even going as far to use it in ritual sacrificial ceremony.

Something always bothered in this movie. Why couldn't the engineers wake them self's up from the Stasis Pods? I am assuming they went into the pods to escape from what ever they were running from... but why would you do that if you can't set the pod to automatically wake you up. Also the ship did not look damage why didn't the engineers that survived just fly the ship off the planet.

Something I wonder about. In the hologram where the Engineers run into the Big Giant Head room, one fell and was decapatated. Fine. His head was just inside the door. BUT there were no bodies of the Engineers who went in ahead of him. The crew had a fair amount of time to explore- and if there was a door leading out, I'm sure someone would have mentioned it. And the goo cylinders were all perfectly arranged. A tiny mob of panaked giants would have left some sign.

This isn't a bad theory. It's very plausible. However, it could be argued that the "destroyers" caused their own down fall by an initial infection outbreak on one of their own memebers and turned into a zombified engineer, similarly to what happened to Fifield. So the destroyers destroyed themselves in a freak accident.

They were running from an Ultramorph, born from an Engineer. If you watch the scene where David discovers the Engineer alive in stasis you can see that the other three stasis units had holes in them about where the Engineers chests would have been, meaning there were facehuggers and subsequently Ultramorphs around 2000 years ago during the fiasco.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this in the comments I haven't been through them all... When David first activates the ships recording you hear a screen or something from what I assumed to be an xenomorph..?? And that is what they where running from.. A few Engineer's actually got away, one of them flew away on another ship and crashed on that planet at the start of Alien because something got on the ship, or the chest burster bursted out while he was flying and made home crash... Seems to more or less explain a few things to me...

Damn, I know this has been said in other ways, but you have a great voice. Idk if you have a career doing voice work or not, but you should. Video games, documentaries, even feature films. Hollywood needs a new James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman and you certainly have the same powerful/authoritative voice both of them had in their prime.

Hmm I guess it does trigger mutations, maybe the effect is like some sort of super cancer... Then there's probably 2 different versions of black goo right? the one on board the ship had a very mutating effect while the creators used something that dissolved an organism.down to its basic parts

My idea for a third alien/prometheus movie is as follows: The engineers are the main characters in the movie and comes to the planet that was in the Prometheus movie. There they find Weyland inside the crashed spaceship. They have a blue elixir which they empty all over him and bring him to life. In the next part they arrive at the planet from alien covenant and find the other robot(Walter) who is david's twin.The engineers use the blue elixir and repairs him. Once awaken the engineers and Weyland get to know all the horrible things that David has done, and weyland says "we have to stop David" . They set course for origae. When they arrive,they scans all the planet,and finds the planet is full of hostile organisms except on a high mountain where they discover that there are humans inside a cave. Inside the cave they meet a herd of children, who tell that when they had lived on the planet for over ten years, they began to be attacked by Xenomorphs and all the adults died or were turned into these creatures. There were also great giants developed by someone the children calls David. The engineers get ready to wipe out all the Xenomorphs that David has created, but the great giants manage to escape with one of the engineers' spaceships. The engineers and Weyland hunts the spaceship and manage to force the spaceship down on the planet lv426.Where it start sending a distress signal. The engineers return to Origae to find David, but discover that he has escaped. In the last part we see David arriving and meeting an unknown alien species on a tropical like planet.And that makes the cliffhanger that ends the third movie.

And I think he said something to the "engineer/destroyer" that got them killed, sacrificing himself, because he knew Shaw was capable to get rid of him, and then put David back together so that he could fulfills his plans.

I've been a huge alien fan since I was young and growing up in Baltimore, no one else did. They rather watch scarface or belly. But all this new information finally is such a good feeling. The Engineers in the beginning of Prometheus also had that saucer shaped ship, the Engineers with the bio suits all fly the classic Geigeresque juggernaut ships. I think your theory of warring factions of Engineers makes sense. I just saw Covenant and I am convinced that the beings that David destroyed are not the Engineers at all, I believe they are another creation of the Creator Engineers.

At this point I don't know what to think. Prometheus' narrative structure was so haphazard, the rules around what the black goo is and does so arbitrary, its explanation of the Engineers' motives and goals so fragmentary and ill defined, it's hardly worth the headspace to try to puzzle it out.

I figured it was an outbreak and they were scrambling to that room because with the door closed it maintains the goo, stops it from mutating the host. The severed head on the other side of the door was well preserved, and once it was exposed to air on the ship, began mutating again. It would also explain the dead pileup by another door (similar to the dead pileups in Covenant). The engineer looking back could've just been checking for the one that collapsed or if any more of his buddies were coming.
