Charlotte didn’t get better because of the trade, but at least they didn’t owe $220 million to, what would turn out to be, an injury prone point guard.

This feels like CJ McCollum in that you have an obviously talented offensively gifted almost 30 year old and your gonna pay him a lot of money to not win championships. Then you realize that scoring buckets shouldn't cost that much if your not gonna win that much and if you pay him max your just doing it to put fans in the seats.

CJ makes a lot, but not insane money like Beal would make. He's on a 3 year, 100M deal, for 33.3M a year on average. Beal is going to get 248M, he'll average 49.6M! Assuming he gets that deal, he'll be making 48% more than CJ and that's before you realize that CJ is only on a 3 year deal so at least it's something you can deal with in the short term. Supermax deals are often team killers. They take such a huge amount of money out of the cap to build a quality roster around. When you got guys that are mid 30's making 45-50 million a year (Harden, Lillard, etc) when their best days are behind them- it just hurts teams that thought they didn't have any other choice, but to pay, or put themselves into that position of being leveraged.

That has to be part of the analysis. The Westbrook and say Joe Johnson contract were bad contracts but they turned out pretty well for both teams that signed them. Both got a couple of years of good play on the deal and then spun it into a trade for positive assets. Even the Washington last year was able to make a good trade to get off the Westbrook deal so it was only a bad deal for the Rockets and the Lakers. For the Thunder and the Wizards the Westbrook contract was fine.

Beal probably (and realistically) cares only about the money and has likely given up chasing a ring as a basketball player at the current stage of his career. And nothing wrong with that, he gets paid a ton of money to play professional basketball and he's pretty damn good at it. But he's stated multiple times that he and his family love it in Washington and he wants to stay there for his family. The Wizards will likely just ride the contract out for 2 or 3 years before trading him in the future because I can't see ownership wanting to buy Beal out on that huge contract.

The Howard deal is misrepresented here. He actually signed that deal with Miami, who was then going to resign Zo after, so they could exceed the cap, which is done all the time. The problem was Zo went on ESPN and told them he already had agreed to to terms with the Heat before the signed Howard. Wizards owner Abe Pollin lost it, went to Stern, who voided the deal, fined the Heat money and stripped them of a 1st rd pick for “attempting to circumvent the salary cap.” Howard would have fit in great with the Heat, so they were willing to overpay him if it meant they could challenge the Bulls. So it wasn’t so much a bad deal as it was a case of an owner not wanting to lose an asset. Yeah that last part has racial implications ala Dan Gilbert and King James, but that’s how it was back then. Now the players have all the power, so Beal will get his money and then leave in a year or two.

I think NBA should change the rule. Someone who was selected to 3rd team All-NBA only once shouldn't be eligible for the super max! Once he is eligible, it is tough for the Wizards not to give it to him without affecting the player-team relationship (since the player would think he is "entitled" to it by NBA rules). They're discussing what pennies someone should be willing to pay him, I mean Bill even very clearly said that he doesn't begrudge Beal if he gets the 248M offer and takes it, the debate is around whether that is a good move by the Wizards or not. Beal's already earned 178M in his career and is pretty much guaranteed another 300M regardless if he signs this deal or not, so let's not feel too bad for Brad for discussing his contract.

let him go for free, he doesn't have max contract value ,same thing as Kyrie case, just more friendly (but way underachieving)

Westbrook WAS a top 10 guy though. How about just flat out, sometimes it ruins your franchise no matter how good the player is.

Fans are so deluded. Beal is not worth any of the trades fans on a whole bunch of teams have been offering. But hey...if the Wizards smartly accept...more power to them. But heh that's why fans are fans and the professionals utterly ignore them. Now if media would stop giving oxygen to some of these stupid trade scenarios.
@K81Patel2 жыл бұрын
They'll trade him to a garbage team in 3 years and he'll have to take a buyout in the last year and sign with a contender - there's templates for this now. Please see Blake Griffen, John Wall (current), LaMarcus Aldridge, Goran Dragic (okay, obv. Not a star, but you see the pattern of behavior here)
@andrewshandle2 жыл бұрын
The difference here is Griffin, Wall, Aldridge and Dragic were complete shadows of their former selves by the time they took the buyouts (assuming Wall takes one this year). I think Beal is overrated and I wouldn't pay him the money, but he has a heck of a lot more in the tank than any of those guys you list.
@K81Patel2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewshandle Completely agree Beal has a lot more in the tank NOW. But in 3-4 years, when his contract is $47-49M per year, what will he have? He'll be traded for parts on the dollar and then take the buyout. Since posting my comment, it's being reported that Wall is taking a buyout and will sign with the Clippers. The template is here and working beautifully.
@andrewshandle2 жыл бұрын
@@K81Patel I think Beal in 3 years will still be a lot more valuable than a Washed Black Griffin...but I think the player Beal is today isn't worth 49M let alone 3 years from now, so it's a moot point. I wouldn't sign Beal to a "regular" Max, let alone the Supermax.

@@catman-du8927 Lakers have their own 1st in 2027, Brooklyn has some 76ers picks from the Harden deal. It's technically possible, really would come down to Washington wanting to tank.
