What you can do, with the 0-1-2! Legal actions and creative footwork that can be used through the progression principles of the travelling rule. These are in relation to the FIBA and NBA rule book. All stakeholders (Referees, Coaches, Players, Fans) can learn from this video to develop the game.
BIG SHOUTOUT to Jard Schuit for posting this video which spurred this video and finding additional videos in association to it.

Gather step requires the dribble to be alive while the hand is in contact with the ball. Holding, carrying/underhand the ball means dribble has ended so no more gather/zero step. 0 step becomes 1 if you picked/carry the ball with 0 step still on the floor and the other foot in the air. The earliest you can pick/carry the ball for a 012 is when 0 is off the ground or 1st is already on the floor (so both feet are on the ground and you can pick 1 as pivot to take the 2nd step).

I understand your view and I have mentioned that until Lugo comes out with an interpretation, it will never be clear. I see what you see but some high level officials (Ronnie Nunn) deem it legal. That is why Lugo (FIBA interpreter) needs to clarify.

During the spin move it is a travel as it is not a zero step because the player carried the ball thus what you assumed the zero step is actually the pivot step.

It is not possible to limit how high you can jump during the 012, it is up to the ref to decide if a player jumped, or did a high 012 step similar to how a ref decides if a player is attempting a shot or not to determine if the player can be the first to rebound his own airball (except for nba which you cant), or if a player fumbled the ball or drops it purposely, or if the shooter extended his leg by natural or on purpose etc.

That is my interpretation as well. I think that a player jumping for a shot then using a step that was not used yet would be detrimental to the game. Current situation is this: A respected FIBA interpreter has a similar interpretation to you that the intent of the rule is not that, the official FIBA rules interpreter for the world has not weighed in on it. The issue is Ronnie Nunn, Former NBA official and Officials Development, has stated the height of the steps do not matter. Currently, that is the only interpretation that has been given from someone high up.

Do you know of any similar vidoes breaking down the "step through" move? In words, I suppose here it would be a stationary player with an established pivot (step 1) foot, say their right foot, who then takes a step 2 onto their right foot, lifting their pivot but shooting the ball before the pivot comes back down. I think the NBA, NCAA, and NFHS are very clear that it's a legal move ("pivot foot may be lifted but not returned to the floor before passing/shooting) but FIBA doesn't have that clear language. Cheers

The most simple way I can put it, FIBA's rules talk about jumping off the pivot foot, and not stepping off of the pivot. That is the reason it is allowed. It is not clear like the NBA in terms of description. A video in regards to it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHTFcqemi7OroNk&ab_channel=RefereeUniversity

How does this apply in a spin move?

Makes most spin moves legal, and can make it more creative near the end of the move

If after a dribble I set my left foot on the floor(this is the zero step) while keeping my hand above the ball without catching it, then simultaneously the moment my right foot touches the floor I catch the ball with my both hands(this is gather step) and for finishing I make two last steps for a shot. Is it a traveling violation?
@refereeuniversity
@refereeuniversity 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to picture but if I read it correctly, it would not be a travel. 0 step is when you gather the ball, so since you did not end your dribble on the left foot (because hand is above the ball without catching it), your zero step would be the moment you catch the ball while being on your right foot. Then the following two steps would be your 1-2 of the 0-1-2. Does that make sense?

His left foot= 0 step (Gather), His right foot = 1 step (control), both feet = 2 step (land both feet simultaneously) and No pivot allowed.

@@refereeuniversity Anyway this turns to be very awkward, call it handball not basketball, to many steps allowed. Who created this rules, James Harden? 0 step, gather step, 1 step....... hoping, dancing

lol the difficulty comes between the rules not being perfectly written and moves are all up to interpretation.
