Roman Polansky has been hiding in (mostly) France because in 1978 he was charged with a serious sexual offense against a minor, pled guilty and was convicted, and decided to straight up flee the jurisdiction before sentencing because he thought it wasn't going to go his way. He is currently a convicted sex offender and a fugitive from justice. Polansky has French citizenship and France does not extradite their own citizens (in 78 Interpol did have him on their wanted list, which ended up restricting his movements to France, Switzerland, and Poland, he is no longer on Interpols' wanted list). Sadly, it is possible that if Polansky ever did come to be in US custody that he could get off on an appeal due to judicial misconduct (the judge in 78 agreed to the ludicrously light sentence for the plea bargain and then changed his mind before the sentencing hearing). The lawsuit regarding the 2024 allegations of his conduct in 1973 (yes, I have to specify all of that, the man is the subject of a LOT of sexual assault/abuse lawsuits and allegations) is a purely civil matter and has nothing to do with which countries he stays in.
