One story I read he was trying to go back to his old career as 'the meanest dude in the Wrestling Federation!' only to find out that lots of the wrestlers there were doping on crazy powerful new drugs. Insulted, he teams with Batman to find the culprit. Another time he fought against his own 'kind' when a legion of horrific reptilian monsters were summoned by an occult group to level Gotham.

The Brave and the Bold #111 (Death Has the Last Laugh) begins with Batman & Commissioner Gordon finding a family massacred with the Joker’s calling card, though it seemed the Joker made an oversight. Later clues leads Batman to believe the Joker was getting framed by a mob boss, and offers to work with him to find the guilty party; it was revealed to be plan to set up Batman to be killed by the Joker, but the Clown Prince of Crime underestimated the Caped Crusader.

That's what you gotta love about Batman. He puts the villains in jail or Arkham Asylum, but he'd much rather rehabilitate them. As Bruce Wayne, doesn't he help fund the asylum to better help the criminally insane? He doesn't just punch the bad guys and win the day. Batman wants the villains to stop being villains so their evil will be put to rest as humanely as possible. When Batman hears that a villain wants to get better or want to do something good for the right reasons, he's willing to give them a chance

Joker teamed up with a villain that managed to seal away the rest of the Justice League, take over Gotham, kill Harley’s best friend (and later, lover) Poison Ivy, and all to prove to her that she was stupid for leaving him! It was at that point that she swallowed her pride and went to Batman for help in taking him down.

I haven’t got to Detective Comics 1015 yet, but in New 52 we see a different back story for Fries where he becomes obsessed with Nora after working for Wayne Tech and working to cure her as well as killing his sick mum. So did they retcon the retcon and go back to Nora actually being his wife instead of an obsession?
