I was half expecting to see The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons on this list. If you destroy 100 signs in the game and return to the sign loving subrosian, he’ll make the GameBoy Color startup screen play and make you think that he made you quit without saving. If you haven’t saved in awhile, this can be terrifying

Amen to that. Those sanity effects that made you think that something terrible was to your character were bad enough, but the ones that broke the fourth wall really brought it to the next level. It's too bad that the fate that developer Silicon Knights had brought upon themselves essentially killed any chance of a proper sequel or even a remake, as it would be interesting to see how they adopted those sanity effects to reflect the state of the new hardware.

It's too bad that Eternal Darkness was just more of an honorable mention; I was there when a friend was playing it, and we got that sanity effect, and panicked something fierce. Fortunately, the panic, tinged by rage, had set in so fast that he actually hesitated to reset the game, and Alex came back from her hallucination, allowing the game to proceed. It was infuriating, because at another point, he did basically have a memory card go off, and corrupted all its save data, so we were scared it was a defect of his particular console hatdware.

In Castlevania - Portrait of ruin, the Vampire killer might be the best weapon in the game, but you are told not to use it too much because it will take your life away. For what I know, nothing happens when you use it, even if it's the only weapon that you use.

The ending of Hellblade (which also sort of lies to you, just not explicitly) was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I even knew about it ahead of time but forgot in the moment so I still got to experience the gradual realization of what was happening. I haven't played the sequel but I don't really want to, either. It just seems so unnecessary. The ending of the first game was perfect.

I’d say the Telltalle Games Walking Dead franchise choices do make a difference. While the first couple seasons mostly play out to the same story points, some people get mad at you or trust you or you decide if they live/die. It may not offer huge branching paths or complete story changes, it does change enough that characters will treat you better/worse depending upon how you treat them.

Hellblade does NOT lie to you. Obvious, yes, it does misdirect to make it seem like you will lose progress. However…it says “if Senua fails and succumbs to the darkness, all progress will be lost”. Failing a combat encounter is not failing. In the context of the story, Senua failing is giving into her base instincts and being overcome…which is what happens at the end of the game. Story-wise she fails…but you finish the story…hit credits…and are returned to the title screen…thus “resetting progress”. Incredible

X number of games that have TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES... BUT... Remember how Mass Effect would be the GREATEST TRILOGY OF ALL TIME if it hadn't been for the flubbed ending? No Man's Sky has all but transformed as a result of hard work and dedication to making up for broken promises, and now you can explore a fairly diverse universe. BUT THE ENDING still hasn't been fixed. You reach the core of the universe, find that all the star systems have been discovered and explored and named after Rick Astley lyrics. Then you get dumped into an entirely new universe you have to travel tens of thousands of light years a dozen at a time. And that's not even the worst part. EVERY SINGLE PIECE of your gear and ship parts is shattered to pieces as you're dumped, once again, onto a hostile planet with nothing more than your life support functioning. No catharsis.
