To be fair about the Breeder in Mass Effect 3 thing, that's actually not so much a case of ME3 punishing you for showing mercy then, as it is ME3 punishing you for NOT showing mercy in ME1 to the actual Queen, since saving the real queen in ME3 will have the actual Rachni help and contribute legitimately.

One of my favorites is AC Odyssey where You're giving a choice but to save a family that has the plague on kefalonia, if you don't save them they get brutally murdered. If you do save them they end up dying anyway, but not before decimating the entire island with the plague, and every time you return to the island for the remainder of the game it's in shambles.
@corbingarrett1206
@corbingarrett1206 2 жыл бұрын
@matt yeah, both choices suck for sure, but one choice doesn't involve the decimation of an entire island. But the way the quest is put together you're always going to save the family on your first play through it tugs on your heartstrings. But that causes the entire island to die. Hence getting punished for being merciful.

I find the most tragic thing about Joels death is that the Joel we meet at the start of part one would've left Abby for dead. Joels surrogate father relationship to Ellie had softened him over time making him a more compassionate person then he was previously. It's much like the fate of Tony Montana in Scarface, Tony's moral decision to not carry out a hit because he refused to bring harm to children costs him his life after he made one merciful choice in a life full of immoral choices and behavior

I never played Part 2, but it looks like Abby should have killed Ellie when she killed Joel, because if Joel hadn't killed her father, the man would have killed Ellie. Therefore, killing Ellie would have closed the circle. Based on another Whatculture video I saw... Ellie letting Abby live at the end allowed her to continue leading her group to survive the way they always had instead of leaving her to a fate worse than death like morality choices I've seen in other games.

Obligatory Undertale reference: Normally (and by design) this is a game that rewards you for showing mercy to whatever monsters you encounter in battle. But if you insist on killing monsters to the point of triggering the game's "genocide" narrative, near the end of it one character will try one last time to persuade you for mercy... ...only to promptly kill you if you accept his offer, because by that point YOU'RE the villain.

I wish there were more games where the bad ending is canon, for example, legacy of Kain blood Omen you have a choice, to Doom the world or to save it and doom the world is the correct choice so in a way the bad ending is the good ending while the good ending is the bad ending it flips the coin on its head from its tail.

@cericat
@cericat 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dontworryaboutit961 Yep, it's both a demonstration of the butterfly effect, so many people die because of a choice Joel made in the original game, then that comes back and kills Joel in 2 and leads to more personal deaths as well. That said there's no guarantee that Ellie's death in the first would have saved anyone from the infection, and it's hard to judge Joel on that one when Ellie has become as important to him as Sarah. The first game is a redemption story, it may actually have benefited from showing more of what shitty people Joel and Tess had been instead of leaving it primarily to voice lines. The second shows the vicious cycle revenge can take, and the cost even if you break it can be high.

I think that overly simplifies the story and completely misses the point. No one is depicted as being a monster with irredeemable qualities, not the people who murder Joel, or Ellie who can't straight up murders them in response. The story is about revenge and how empty the pursuit of it is.

No Walking Dead Season 4? James keeps whining about AJ turning into a killer if he kills again, preaching morality while he himself also pushes his zombie religion on you about how they're totally not monsters, and it all comes to a head when AJ has Lily, a cold hearted woman from Season 1 who appears as a raider recruiting kids into a war they can't say no to (they torture resistance and kill those who deny them) at gun point. Listen to James and spare her, she slits his throat and escapes to carry on doing evil. Tell AJ to ice her, James bitches about it but nobody innocent dies and AJ turns out fine. Honestly, it's horrifying how many people spared her.

"Demoralizing moralty" is what i call the generic lies irl, that the establishment throws at you from different sources. Frustrate a person in their imagination, and you achive the exact opposite of what art can accomplish. Instead of dreaming of a better world, people submit obsequently and subserviently to injustice. I find those demoralizing "moralties" in rpgs, almost unforgivable, depending on how frustrating they are.

No: what happens to Alexander at the end of his questline isn't punishment, per se - a duel is what he wanted from the best warrior he knows, even if it's from the Tarnished who he's aware is too strong for him. Rather than get an incredibly useful talisman from Alexander post-questline, having the Tarnished permanently lose something as an equivalent to that talisman would be an appropriate punishment, but instead, Elden Ring rewards your hard work for completing his questline.

For one of your next videos, could you do one on ways games honored those who died during production? A good example is Isamu Tanonaka who voiced Igor in the persona series. They had someone else voice a 'new' Igor in Persona 5 until you reveal the truth about Igor. Then you go the original voice (or close to it for P5 Japanese version).

Pretty sure Bloodborne had a lot of sadistic choices that were punishments: - Sending Gascoigne's youngest daughter to the Cathedral Ward gets her killed by a Maneater Boar; likewise, giving a Bloodstained Ribbon received from killing that Boar to the daughter's older sister leads her to commit suicide - Sending the Afflicted Beggar to the chapel in the Cathedral Ward and he starts killing all NPCs in the chapel - Asking the prostitute Arianna too many times for her blood and Sister Adella will kill her - If you send any NPC to Iosefka's clinic instead of the chapel at the Cathedral Ward, they get turned into a Celestial Emissaries (though on the plus side, this also affects the Afflicted Beggar).

Abby only survived TLoU2 because Naughty Dog wouldn't let me kill her canonically. I threw her off mountains, let Infected rip her to pieces and I must've let Ellie kill her over 20 times before I reluctantly did it the way the game wanted me to. She has got to be one of (if not the only) characters in a fictional story that I despise. What a waste of Laura Bailey's talent.

Exactly, plus I had little sympathy foy the fireflies deaths. Seeing as her father was about to murder an innocent girl when Joel stopped him. And she wouldn't have been the first, if you read documents in the firefly base then you find out there have been other test subjects. Also what doctor makes brain surgery the first call when you find someone immune to a deadly disease.
@Joe_Okey
@Joe_Okey 2 жыл бұрын
Obviously, you missed the point completely. First of all, no matter what her father did, he was STILL her father and his being murdered was going to affect her. Second, she was given a chance to redeem herself through her association with Lev and became a better person for it. Finally, and ultimately, Ellie did the right thing in letting Abby go as killing her would have made Ellie no better than Abby. If Abby was wrong to kill Joel, then Ellie would have been EQUALLY as wrong if she had killed Abby.
@rinraiden
@rinraiden 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joe_Okey She redeemed herself through Lev by... slaughtering countless people in WLF who trusted her? And killing Abby would be wrong of Ellie because it would have made her "no better than Abby"? Okay, so Ellie killing all of Abby's friends along the way didn't effect her at all? As long as Abby was unharmed things are... okay? No only was killing Abby the right choice (and the only choice Ellie would've made if they kept her writing consistent), but by not killing her all of Abby's friends died for literally nothing.

I still believe Last of Us 2 was wasted potential. The reason i despise the game isnt entirely because of Joel's death alone. But also because of how the story was told (getting to play Ellie all the way to the "boss fight" room before getting cockblocked and forced to play joel's murderer. If I was made to play Abby and get to know her first before the golfing scene. I'd probably still dislike her but not as badly as I do now. Bonus is the epilogue, after losing everything Ellie letting Abby go is another punch in the groin

@@Joe_Okey I never said Joels death wouldnt affect her, that much is obvious. My gripe as i said the original comment is the way the storyline is constructed. Its a lot like the film Passengers (Jennifer Larence and Starlord) where-in while I understand why the female lead hates Starlord. I couldnt take her side, because I saw how Starlord was suffering for the entire first half of the movie. Thats my problem with Last of Us 2. The first half of the game is you being enraged just as much as Ellie. So when i was forced to play Abby in the PEAK of my anger. It soured my experience of half the game. Thats why i previously said they should have found a way to interchange it. (Ellie and Abby's sections). Letting you bottle up your emotions while playing as Ellie after seeing Joel murdered and never letting you properly release it by killing Abby or some other way made the whole game in the end feel dark, unsatisfying and pointless. Especially after that epilogue
