personally, I don't believe gangnam style was significant to the general public's relationship with kpop. while gangnam style was monumental, people mostly saw it as a funny meme, not as an entrance for other kpop songs to break into the west. it was years later when bts rose in the scene that more and more kpop started popping up everywhere. psy himself said bts achieved gangnam style's "unfulfilled dreams", which is pretty interesting
@shelley63732 ай бұрын
This is a really great point! I love PSY and he is definitely a pioneer in the sense that I can’t think of another K-Pop act that garnered that kind of attention and success in the West before BlackPink and BTS. But BTS opened the door for my K-Pop acts to become popular in the West because they were seen as musicians and their music was music, whereas it felt like Gangnam Style was received more like a meme. I saw a lot of people who loved Gangnam Style and enjoyed dancing to it when it came out but none of them was interested in getting into more K-Pop acts after listening to it. The same can’t be said for BTS and BlackPink.
@jisoosforehead95352 ай бұрын
@@shelley6373 yeah. BTS def the one who paved the way for all kpop groups to promote in the west and made kpop as mainstream as it is. like even the grammys acknowledged kpop as a genre in their articles when hearing BTS music. blackpink set the revival and standard of girl groups in the late 2010s after so many western girl groups like fifth harmony and little mix being inactive and eventually not many people are interested in ggs until blackpink came. basically both bts and blackpink set kpop groups to be the ones to take over boy bands and girl groups. while yes, psy and girls generation were there before them, them and kpop were seen as a popular trends by the mass population.

You‘re right, Psy didn‘t give exposure to the K-Pop world. The same thing about Pikotaro (also probably AKB48, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and BABYMETAL) with the J-Pop world. Imagine if people know B.A.P., Block B, T-Ara, Sistar before BTS and BLACKPINK. I even know the groups who are nugu and some Idols/member redebut into new groups.

Psy has always been iconic, his concerts always look lit and fun to be at compared to other artists where fans tend to just sit or stand and look while waving their lightsticks. International people (or at least, people who are not in contact with kpop) tend to see him as just a gag show or an asian guy being silly and funny but he makes some good bank and his dance routines are a real workout! I still remember telling my classmates that kpop had a chance of becoming big when doing a presentation centered around kpop 2 months before Gangnam Style came out and they mocked me. I guess I ended up with the last laugh.

PSY currently has his own record label named "P Nation" or really just PSY Nation lmao. He's busy looking after his artists under his label so he's quite a hardworking man. He has been continuously releasing hits in Korea after Gangname Style. Many western audiences just never heard of it cuz it never made it to the west, mainly due to the songs having more Korean witty lyrics that most international audiences cant understand or even cant sing them. But rest assured, he is a legend in Korea with soooo many top hits throughout his discography. In the global aspect, he is seen as a one-hit wonder, but in Korea and Kpop, he is a long-term hit-maker. Bop after bop. So check out his top hits if yall are wondering lmao.

as far as i know psy has established his own label after leaving yg entertainment. yg entertainment is known for their restrictions on their artists and ‘untouchable appeal’, however, yg groups have been the trendsetters and biggest in each representative generation of kpop. their hip hop/ pop like approach has always had a massive western appeal leading to yg groups succeeding overseas and every artist under their company having at-least one hit that is known amongst kpop audiences. the idol industry is harsh tho. as far as i know that psy, despite being much respected amongst enjoyers of kpop, idols themselves & the korean public, doesn’t seem to have the best management and ended up losing big names who have signed under his label.

Since I'm a heavy K-Pop fan, he has his own agency called P Nation, Hyuna and Dawn were signed under him along with Jessi but they left because Psy wanted things to go his way instead of letting his artists have creative freedom. The only artist under P Nation is Hwasa based on my knowledge. Besides that company doesn't produce good music, every K-Pop fan knows that P Nation music sucks. This comment was made before I watched the video.

Nothing "happened" to him. Those that were listening to him because of the novelty, stopped doing it after Gentleman (which, don't forget, was a Top 10 hit in so many countries 1 year after Gangnam Style), while he's had a pretty decent number of casual listeners outside of Korea. All of his albums except for the most recent were Top 10 in Korea, he's had 4 more #1s in Korea and 12 Top 10s since Gangnam Style, and after Gentleman he's had 3 more singles enter the Top 100 in the US and Australia (among other countries). Gangnam Style (MV) has over 5B views on KZbin, Gentleman sits at 1,5B, Hyuna's parody of GS is at 830M and he has 10 videos in total with +100M views (7 of them for different singles). Gangnam Style has an extra 450M streams on Spotify, That That has 250M, Gentleman 113M, Daddy 93M, and he has over a billion streams there in total, and an average of 5,6M monthly listeners (and as Spotify is not big in Korea, it's safe to say most of them are from overseas). I think it's easy to tell I used to be a fan lol
@Ana-zm7ox2 ай бұрын
Really didn't know Gangnam Style had changed things that much, he's a bigger icon than I even thought. Anyway since then he did get a new hit even outside of Korea with That That, founded his own label (which has widely successful acts like Hwasa) and has his festival that's still going strong since 2011. He's doing just fine.

I won’t repeat other comments but it is fascinating how PSY is basically a superstar in Korea, but in the US he was just treated as a meme one hit wonder. Even with the title of this video u wouldn’t know that he currently owns a company and even collabed with BTS’ suga which was extremely popular. Idk just interesting how looking at something through a US centered lens can change how u perceive it vs how its viewed globally

It's interesting for you to say that because while yes Gangnam Style was huge and did break some barriers it didn't do a whole lot for kpop as a whole in the west. It was around 5 years after Gangnam Style came out that BTS broke out into the west in 2017. The 2 successes were completely unrelated, BTS would've had the same success even if Gangnam Style didn't happen. PSY has even talked about how BTS has been able to achieve things that he couldn't. To most people PSY was a 1 hit wonder and this video kind of proves it with so many people not even realizing he's still successful in South Korea. PSY has even said that at the height of Gangnam Style people didn't even know his name they just called him Gangnam Style. But BTS has been able to maintain longevity in the west. They've had multiple number 1 albums and songs, Grammy nominations, sold out stadium shows, etc. Kpop groups now actively promote and tour in the west, American award shows have started to incorporate kpop categories, and chart on the billboard charts more often. That only started to happen after BTS.
