May be called the Blues Brothers Band, but it is actually three-fourths of Booker T. and the MGs, sans the late Al Jackson Jr on drums, and augmented with a Memphis style horn section. With Al, they formed the nucleus of practically every recording to come out of Stax Records during its golden age. The late Duck Dunn was to the Stax Groove what James Jamerson was to the Motown Sound...its heartbeat. I learned to play the bass nearly 50 years ago copying his infectious bass lines! Steve Cropper is a musical genius who wrote, produced, and played lead guitar on many unforgettable hits along with the Big O. Booker T still grinds away on the organ last I knew. The world of music owes these three gifted and talented musicians so much more than a few minutes on Saturday night Live under a counterfeit moniker. 👑🎸🎵

Yeh, but that's what his outfit would be called in this day and age. I'm using, (rather facetiously since I think the clothes are tacky,) "boss threads" as the hip slang of the time, mid 1960s.

This was a huge hit for Rufus. I still perform it solo on piano. The tune is strong enough to get people off their butts even w/o a big band. This Blues Bros. Band is the best all around blues band ever created.

It's great to see some of the original Stax house band (Steve Cropper-Guitar, Donald Dunn-Bass Matt Murphy-Guitar, and Booker T Jones-Keyboards back Rufus on this. I'd need to pull my original LP out to confirm, but my guess they were on the original 60s recording.

All except Matt Guitar Murphy.. In fact, I don't recall seeing him on *any* of the old Stax recordings.. However, if memory serves correctly ,at the time he was playing in Memphis Slim's touring band.. and also, I think, recording with him. I'm pretty sure it was the MGs and the Mar Keys backing him up on his first album, after that there was just too much work for them to be the only house band so I believe by that time a few members of the Bar Kays did duties as house band too...

This is only the "blues brothers band" in as much as they were the band for the movie. And way before the "blues brothers" was even an idea. Actually they are is Booker T and the MG's aka Stax Record's session band....they did the backing music for almost every person who walked through the door at Stax. In my opinion they were with out a doubt the main reason that Stax had so many hit records. Of course the fact that they had one of the greatest bass players to ever Fender P-bass, Mr. Donald "Duck" Dunn (R.I.P) that could groove like no other! Not taking anything away from the rest of the band but Duck was one of a kind!

haaaa, my freakin dawg, what is going on in you avatar pic!? BTW, I was fortunate enough to see the D.A. & J.B. B.B.s at Winterland, New Years eve 1977 (The Dead of course) also had NRPS, Santana, The Band, someone like The Flying Karamazov bros opened it and as I recall Bill Graham rode a giant mock Harley on a wire from the top rear of the balcony to the stage. Me and the bud's had front center balcony. Before show started we were duct taping the microphones to the block in front and some BGP guy came over and said "You have to take those down. You can't light those off in here." and we looked at each other like WTF? Bud said "Uh, those are microphones". Guy said "Okay, thought they were sky rockets." I offered him a spliff for us having caused his diversion but he declined. As always, I fell asleep during Wharf Rat then woke up with Not Fade Away.

Brother that must have been freaking AWSOME! I wasn't borne until 73 so I'm what ya might call a late comer..well sort of my Aunt gave me one of those big ass house stereos, the kind with the phonograph and 8trk players and she gave me a bunch of old records like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard and a bunch of old Sun Records and Staxx 45's when I was around 11yrs so by the time I hit Jr high and everyone else was listening to Depeche Mode and that noise I was digging on the GOOD STUFF! I ended up playing bass guitar, like most kids by default because everyone else wanted the glory of playing 6string and be like Jimi or Jimmy or Eddie or but I was happy after discovering the real greats like Duck and Jaco! Long story short I enlisted at 17 back in 1990 and just retired in 2014 and now play in 2 different bands one of which we do originals with some Freddy King thrown in and in the other we do everything from Prince to Allman Bros and all the while I am doing my best to cop what Mr. Dunn did! My avatar? I was playing a gig at the Slippery Noodle Inn and this some what hot chick asked me for my number in between sets and the next thing I know I got this pic texted to me! I figure it was her fat friend who was trying her luck..and no I did not end up taking her home!!!

Agree with everything you said - 100%%%%!!! Duck Dunn had that "groove-thang" like no other. Growing up in Memphis in a family of music fans exposed me to literally everything being produced during that time. Not just in Memphis - but Muscle-Shoals, Nashville, etc. American Studios, in Memphis, was another somewhat forgotten gem of the 60's and 70's. Would love to see a documentary on all of the great music produced in Memphis other than - but including the obvious - Elvis, Jerry-Lee, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, etc. So much forgotten and/or under-appreciated talent. They deserve to be honored.

@CarlSchwamberger: Actually none of them were badly off in the seventies. Steve Cropper was a millionaire and Duck Dunn was close to it. The horn section were the best in the business (still are). Today they are worth a fortune. Duck Dunn owned the record company that released the Clapton Unplugged album. It sold ten million copies in a year. Only superstars (Neil Young, Dylan,Clapton) can afford to hire them. Cropper gets publishing royalties for writing some of the biggest songs of the 60's.
