Craig as a fellow coffee addict there’s 2 things I do to keep the addiction minimal: 1: I make a half a cup / order half strength instead of the usual full cup every morning, then another half serve through the day to moderate the caffeine effects and avoid the big caffeine crash. 2: I regularly have a bad nights sleep somewhere in the week so usually end up having a full serve by Friday. So, either Saturday or Sunday each week/ fortnight I go without or just have green tea and it’s like a total reset the next day, back to a half serve for work! Keeps the addiction at bay and helps with sleep 💤

Do you have ADHD/ADD Caffeine can provide a substitute for medications that help with ADHD/ADD such as Concerta and Adderall. So if you have ADHD/ADD and you quit the caffeine you may notice your ADD/ADHD more.

I swear, your parent's skits just keep on getting funnier. This one made have to pause the video to take a breather! The rest of the video was fantastic too, by the way :) If you feel yourself slipping into your old dependence on caffeine, I'd be curious if keeping a little caffeine logbook would help. Like, writing how energetic/tired and motivated/unmotivated you're baseline feeling each day, and tracking the caffeine you do have and how it makes you feel. If you notice a correlation between caffeine & having a tired/unmotivated baseline, it could help you decide to start cutting back.

Quit caffeine 6 months ago. I have no desire to have it ever. Sleep much better, don't get hungry as often and feel better overall.

My body and mind have been sending me very clear messages that I can no longer tolerate coffee, which I’ve ignored until now. I’m quitting coffee and other sources of caffeine and I’m not happy about it. Thanks for the informative and funny video!

Good luck. I haven't quit coffee in awhile, but when I have in the past I've had better luck with the acute symptoms by tapering off rather than just stopping. E.g. reducing to one cup/day, then half-cup, then alternating days, then stopping. Last time I quit, it was for health reasons and it took a couple of years for the issue to resolve. Now I'm back on the sauce, but it's because I really love the taste of coffee amd my body tolerates it now. Long way to say, I hope your health improves with quitting coffee, since it's giving you trouble. And I hope you have/ find a good decaf option to keep enjoying tasty drinks.

Could I ask what signals those might be for you? I quit coffee from time to time for months at a time but never permanently or for any reason other than just stopping on some random day. I tend to stop doing some of my habits from time to time for no reason however anyways. I do recognize that I get ugly headaches without coffee when I used to drink a whole pot to myself. So to counter that I've taken it down to 3 cups which are more like bowls and then to just 1 in the morning. But I've gone back to 1 after work as well to distress for a total of 2 cups a day. On my days off though I get crazy and drink a full pot. Lol I'm broken haha

I gave up “morning caffeine” in January and I’m never going back. I was super anxious (I’m sensitive to caffeine). Now I just stick to tea or decaf and when I’m looking for that energy high I’ll have an occasional post 10am or afternoon coffee but I don’t keep regular coffee in the house. It’s been a great change for me!

I recently lowered my caffeine intake,(just decaf at home and max 2 cups at work) and found out it has a massive effect on ny anxiety, 2 cups are okay on a busy day but 3 cups make me feel sick and give me the same symptoms as an anxiety attack.. I always thought coffee had almost no effect on me but turns out i was wrong

Your parents are simply the best. It’s always so fun to see how they get incorporated into your videos. I tried giving up coffee last year and lasted approximately 3 days. Tried to give up cheese, lasted less than 24 hours. As a fellow Wisconsinite, I applaud you in your efforts, Craig!

Since you're talking about caffeine resets, my strategy is to reset once per week. Saturday is a no coffee day, and it helps make coffee work better the rest of the week. Yeah, that makes Saturday a bit of a slump, but usually I sleep in and do interesting things, as opposed to sit at my desk all day, so I make it through. I also start Sunday with decaf, Wednesday switch to half-caf, and by Friday it's full caf. A bit pedantic and micromanage-y, but it really works great (for me).

I used to drink coffee only at work in the morning and I was wondering why I had headache every weekend. Then drinking a cup at a later time in the day did not fix this headache and I had to take pain meds on top. So I’m happy it works for you. If I skip a day is almost guaranteed headache. 😢

I’m 7 months caffeine free. I started feeling really good at 6 months. However I’ve seen testimonies and stories of people saying it can take up too 2 years to see the full benefits. When you hit 12-14 months you break through another layer of improvement. Most benefits I have experienced are , more confidence, more open to confrontation (sales) , better sleep, more calmness, less anxiety, better speaking abilities, more energy and so on. This is only at 7 months for me. I’ve abused caffeine and this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I’m so happy I did. Way better then being a junky with horrible side effects

Yeah, it takes your body a while to recovery from substance abuse. I think it was an ASAP science video that said it takes 4 months of no alcohol simply for the bacteria in your stomach to start to return to normal levels. I would love to see how someone 5 years down the line of no caffeine & alcohol feels, but I'm not sure there are many humans alive who manage that!

I am 20 months off caffeine now. And I can testify that this is how it works. After about 16-18 months, I broke through that level of improvement that you mentioned. I bridged the first year with decaf and decaf tea. I had my last cup of decaf coffee a month ago and don't miss it at all. Don't even crave it. I actually felt sick after I drank even decaf in the last 6 months or so. When I want a thicker drink that is similar to coffee, I drink golden milk (turmeric latte). I found it's a great replacement. I don't miss cola, either. It's really liberating. (I started this experiment to see if it will cure my migraines.) I'm glad you quit too. I hope you're still at it! I'm really happy I did and I don't think I'll go back. 2 years really is a turning point.

Dude! Just do the sleep study already! I thought it was stupid but I did it anyway and ended up with a CPAP and now my sleep is freaking AMAZING. I did not think it would make such a difference. You gotta fix your sleep. Everything else is connected to it.

We switched to half caff many years ago and it was exactly what I needed. No jitters, but a noticeable jolt of energy. Tip: you can buy half caff but I've never found flavored ones - buy a flavored decaf and a non-flavored caff and mix them together on your own.

I thought I was coffee-dependent, then I saw a psychiatrist, and it turns out I was.... because I have ADHD. I take meds for it now, and don't "need" so much coffee. Still love 'er though.

Caffeine is a stimulant too, it just works a bit differently than ADHD stimulant medication. For me, my health has actually improved a lot because I have better focus to prep meals, plan for exercise, and not order so much takeout. Plus, it’s helped enormously with anxiety and depression! Just depends on your definition of health.

@@owlexb1124 I know i not trying to judge your adhd medication use, i have adhd too and i use stimulants but not everyday, i just saying that when is was using everyday i started to have problems with high blood pressure and my glucose levels were very high my doctor said that i was in the way of having a stroke so i prefer to use caffeine instead of stimulants because it don't affect my blood pressure neither blood glucose.

I find that drinking coffee hides the fact that I get kind of sluggish when I don't exercise for several days in a row. Perhaps combining drinking coffee with intense physical activity several times a week might fix the demotivation?

I know this is a year later, but my recommendation would just be cessation of chronic caffeine in general, combined with more exercise. What did you actually end up doing?

As someone who has SEVERE ADHD, caffeine has been required for me to not literally vibrate. Recently (as in today) started back on stimulant medication, so it is going to be a weird adjustment since I have to reduce from the 500+mg I've been consuming a day for a decade

Really impressed with how well your parents know their decaf production processes. As for me, I've never cared for the taste of coffee, so have never had a chance to get addicted. My caffeine delivery method of choice is black iced tea. I go through probably two gallons a week (one at work, one at home), so feel free to do the math. I have gotten old enough that I can't drink it after dinner or I don't sleep well at night. But otherwise it works for me. Anywho, thanks again for insightful information!

I spent many years not drinking coffee because I thought it was the source of my anxiety. (turns out it was life and other things that coffee exacerbated) Anyway I started again in college and I realized that coffee AMAZING when used responsibly. It literally prevents my depression. Of course it helps focus and energy levels but the depression prevention is real. I completely avoided seasonal depression this year and I largely credit our new expresso machine with that. That being said, it’s like any drug and you have to use it consciously for it to have benefits, not drink too much, not too late in the day etc. There are days when I feel like I don’t need it and I don’t drink it. Works for me!

I realized just this monday that coffee boosts my mood. It doesn't wake me up, my heart rarely pounds like crazy after two strong cups, but I definitely feel happier through the day. There's nothing better than fresh grounded coffee. Even the smell.

Awesome! Would love to see future updates on caffeine regardless if you’re on the sauce or not. I’ve weened us to 1/3 caffeinated 2/3 decaf in the last year and I’m way less jittery. I think we’ll go to full on decaf soon.

I’ve developed a caffeine sensitivity, and I have to be so careful with decaf. I love coffee and espresso, which makes me sad that I can’t drink it like I used too. But it also concerns me how much caffeine my friends drink, especially when they say they aren’t impacted by coffee

Holy shit! Finally i'm not alone in caffeine sensitivity. Like, i'm on the level that ~ 3 tea leaves in a hot cup gives me a noticable stimulation. Also ginger and potentially cardamom are quite stimulating for me though in a different way and not at the same level as (green or black) tea or coffee.

When I gave up caffeine, I had insane heart palpitations for a week. My mom had the same reaction. Meaning it affects something as basic as heart rate. I think some people just aren't meant to drink coffee.

as someone who has never had coffee i can tell you you can stay motivated and alert without it. but it does take many months to get to that point. my wife went off it when she was pregnant and by say month 4 she did not miss it and was just as much energy as before. she did go back and now needs multiple black tea a day it’s very annoying as i don’t need to worry about such things

Oof, I am thinking I might become your wife, lol, because I lived and breathed coffee, literally, before trying to conceive (and now pregnant). It's been 10 months since quitting coffee/tea (was already off soda), and I don't want it back in my life except in the form of Swiss decaf on occasion. But I do believe pregnancy has caused a lack of appetite for me for coffee. (Every pregnancy is different.) I still have 8 months more to bake this baby, then several(?) more months to breastfeed. I don't plan on going back to coffee, but given how dependent on coffee I was before trying to conceive, I do think it's possible I will feel “safe” enough to fall back into old habits. Raising a kid is a busy job and requires a LOT!! So, I hope your wife has enough resources to handle raising your kiddo! ❤️ Maybe she will see how she's changed on caffeine, and how it might be affecting her blood pressure, sleep, personality, etc.? (Just some ideas.) Hope things get better soon! 🙏

@@sketchur As the video said caffeine I don't believe in moderation is bad for you. my wife works a full-time job as a nurse so having a few black tea per day is not big deal. I'm fully supportive but as somebody who doesn't need to drink caffeine I can say it's very liberating when you don't wake up needing that drink I don't have to worry about when I'm gonna get a tea or a coffee I think it's nice not drinking it. My father didn't drink tea or coffee and so I just did the same as him.

It’s easy just suplement fiber…. There’s flavorless micronized fiber. I liter scoop two scoops on everything

Look into psyllium husk fiber supplements, they work well (mostly) for my IBS constipation. It's an inert fiber supplement so it doesn't get absorbed, it's basically filler to push stuff through.

@@gm4ulkill while supplemental fiber supplements have some merits the real deal is what is really going to help improve health. If possible get as much from diet and let the supplements go, I dont want to push this narrative bit the supplement companies get a lot of money from you thinking that supplements are healthy

Looking into coffee scheduled according to your natural rise and fall of cortisol would be an interesting topic. For most people that would be midmorning and one mid afternoon. I used to have one twice a day, but now I only enjoy the one midmorning. I find doing this prevents jitters and allows me to enjoy my coffee :)

You know Craig, you might want to look into ADHD - both sleep problems and feeling better on caffeine can be symptoms, perhaps what you need is a more stable and regulated stimulant dose? It's not the first time it's crossed my mind watching you over the years either...

He'd probably find caffeine calming if that was the case, it might even help him sleep if it was ADHD. And also he'd have lots of ADHD traits... He doesn't, does he? Getting an energy boost from it really sounds like it's not ADHD, it should be the opposite

@@therabbithat Depends on the amount of caffeine, I was recently diagnosed and medicated and its a very fine balance between "not enough" caffeine and "way too much" and there is no real controlling that with coffee. I used to drink a cup of coffee right before bed and sleep like a baby, or I would have 2-3 cups throughout the day and I was jittery and useless. Type of ADHD also matters because the symptoms are so varied, I am not hyperactive but I am ADHD-Inattentive type which has different symptoms to what people typically perceive as ADHD

@@therabbithat I have ADHD and caffeine definitely does not calm me, so maybe everyone’s different. I definitely have sleep problems AND find it nearly impossible to quit coffee 100%. The lowest I can get down to is 6 oz in the morning. But over time, it tends to creep back up. Sigh….

Adults who nap in the daytime regularly have an increased correlation with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Not saying coffee will prevent Alzheimer’s, just saying there’s a connection between daytime napping and dementia. * Alzheimer’s runs in my family, so I’m taking precautions as much as possible.

I'm currently two weeks into a month of no caffeine, cutting out not only coffee but also my caffeinated pre workout and I've tried to reduce things like kombucha that have green and black tea in them. Hoping this reset will allow me to feel the effects more, not going to lie I have missed coffee making me poop in the morning for a very long time

Have you ever been tested for ADHD? I'm ADHD, as I've watched your videos over the past 2 years I've noticed that you and I share a lot of similarities. ADHD people tend to have terrible sleep, mine is gotten worse as I've gotten older.

I was thinking the same thing. People with undiagnosed or unmedicated ADHD tend to rely on caffeine for its focus more than neurotypicals.

Came to find this comment, thank you for beating me to it. I have to laugh at myself a little though because, despite wanting the benefits coffee would probably have for my brain, the part of my ADHD that never got over “childhood” picky eating can’t get over the taste (even if it’s mostly sugar and flavors) enough to drink more than a few sips and espresso shots just seem intimidating. Smells nice though 🤪

I was JUST wondering the same thing... The ADHD brain processes caffeine a little differently than the neuro-typical brain. If I remember correctly, it's not as much of a "I HAVE ALL THE ENERGY IN THE WORLD; I'M AWAKE NOW" hit, but more of a "I have energy and can FOCUS!" hit. p.s. your parents were especially on point in this one. p.p.s. "Eliza" is the best name ever. I may be biased.

When I stop Caffeine Or THC intake to make sure I can keep the doses low, and my relationship with the two good, Is I take "vacations" after I reach a certain threshold of MG of either to feel satisfied with the effect to bring dependence down. This has helped a lot with my mental health. I noticed as I needed higher and higher doses, I get almost manic, and then almost no amount in enough. I get more depressed, stressed, and anxious from tiny things than I ever would normally. Once I started the vacations, I might get a little irritated when I am on the vacation, but barely. Only like if I was an hour or two late for lunch. Like suuuuper light hanger. Before it would always be extremes. Either functioning great, or not functioning at all. I am only 3 minutes and 9 seconds in to the video. It just sparked me wanted to share my experience with fighting these addictions. Loving your vide so far!! Thank you for sharing so much, I know its hard to share things like this, and even though I only just found you with this video, I glanced at your channel and saw you do this a lot, subscribing for SURE! Thanks! Really helpful!

Also, with caffeine, since it blocks or inhibits the Adenosine receptors, your body will actually make more receptors. This is what caffeine tolerance is. Once you stop caffeine, you now have many more receptors for adenosine which is the chemical that triggers you to be tired. So when you first stop caffeine after long use, you will be tired more. You said that it seemed caffeine was just masking the fact that you were tired a lot is not entirely accurate... most likely at least. I don't know your life. That tib-bit of info really helped me understand recovery from caffeine and helped me know that I wasnt just always tired, and that my body WILL adjust. It just takes time. And sometimes lots of time to adjust to something like that :D

I absolutely love the reenactments and parent bits. Highly entertaining and made my morning. I'm still on coffee (1-2 16 ounce cups, of which a solid 3 ozs is half and half), but I'm Team No Alcohol for a Year (8 months in and change).

I feel a much bigger difference giving up alcohol than I did giving up coffee. I love my organic coffee in the morning. Also Decaf is supposedly really bad for you because of the processing.

Listening to Alexis Fernandez on do you f**king mind and the lack of motivation you talked about reminded me of her episode about dopamine. Stimulating my own dopamine production is something I struggle with as well. Since I stopped making my own coffee at home I've definitely been lazier, until I get to work where I get coffee for free

I never liked coffee so I don’t drink it but I noticed something interesting. I would get tired every day without eating a lot of sugar or any caffeine most of my life (maybe it is carbs then) and the few times I drink soda with caffeine, my brain fog and need to take a nap because I am too tired goes away. I actually have energy! Not sure why soda helps me.

Research the sugar friend… it’s slowly poisoning your mitochondria. It’s a quick rush for a big price down the line. Hope you find something that works for you. Also research fasting for energy. ❤

Sugar and caffeine are addicting, if you don't have it you go through withdrawals. That's why it feels like you're not tired or don't need naps when you have a soda, it's the same as an addict getting his/her fix. Moderated caffeine is not horrible, 1-2 cups a week of decaf that has a little bit of caffeine in it. The sugars though, that's just poison for your body. Get rid of those.

@@eliserio86 For me it is not addicting. I can go cold turkey no problem. But when I quit sugar and soda and caffeine, the brain fog and low energy and tiredness come back. So I’d rather have the soda that fixes things. I don’t have to have it, but if it makes me feel better I will since nothing else cures these issues.

Curious on whether you have any other signs that you might have an ADHD brain structure. Mostly asking because the difference in mental stimulation levels are very different with people that have ADHD and those that don't, and not having caffeine or a stimulant medication never seems to "wear off" or even out for us.

Yep! 28 years and going through treatment for sleep, anxiety, depression, and a small dose of Vyvanse helped the most. (Anecdotally, weaning off of coffee didn't do much for me other than increase depression, even after 6 months.)

Also, green tea has EGCG and theanine and all that which acts to counter the bad effects of caffeine while also being calming. I had an addiction to coffee, quit, now I drink one cup of coffee a day after lunch, before 3pm and it's perfect. No need for coffee in the AM, always made me tired by mid afternoon, then I'd need a 2nd cup, and a 3rd.

You're still physically addicted if you drink it everyday, I know because I've been drinking one cup of coffee everyday for the past 10 years. After I quit, I had a headache for 2 days and sluggishness for weeks because of mere one cup.

I haven't had coffee or tea for nearly 35 years. I find this whole addiction to coffee thing just weird. People spend so much money on it. They're proud of not being functional until having drunk it. They take pictures with it like it's a beloved family member or something. It's just ODD. Edit: Also your parents are fantastic.

I agree with everything you said, but I think it's not fair to lump tea with the coffee. But maybe that's because I drink green tea during work days at the office. Supposedly tea caffeine is released slowly and evenly, with no crash. I only drink it because it's nice to have a hot drink nearby at work and it prevents me from snacking. And the many health benefits can't be ignored. I've been in situations where I stop the tea for many days, and I literally feel no different from any lack of caffeine. No withdrawals like with coffee. I don't even enjoy the taste of green tea, haha, but try to keep the habit because of it's supposed health benefits...

The easiest way to keep caffeine dependency low, is to decrease the portion size of your coffees. At work, I use a real cup, not a mug (what Americans apparently call a "cup"). So in essence I drink about 2 or 3 half-mugs a day. This evens out the caffeine spikes more, and keeps your total intake at a low enough level that you don't get headaches and fatigue when you completely skip a day.

I can really relate to the need for naps. It happened when I switched from espresso to black tea in the morning and I was too stupid to make the connection, I thought I had some nutrient deficiency or something.

I do half-calf. It’s good. Once a friend made me a coffee at her house and all of a sudden my heart went crazy. I was scared and thought I might need to go to the ER. I asked her what kind of coffee she used and she said, Oh I made you a double espresso. 😳😳😳

You could be like me and have an ireggular heartbeat that jumps into a high rhythm called SVT if I have any caffiene. 😢 Above 200 bpm requiring medical intervention. I haven't had caffeine for 3 years. And I miss the added energy every day. But I like my heart not exploding. 🤷‍♂️

i quit coffee a few years ago cause of bad anxiety and panic attacks, since it's a stimulant. I restart drinking coffee last year and in August i quit again. The trick to not have a lot of issues is to do it gradually. Both times I bought instant coffee both regular and decaf, and started with 2 tea spoons of regular and gradually ended up to 2 tea spoons of decaf. The whole process took slmost a month.. Now decaf coffee wakes me up like a charm, if i have 2 decafs i get the tremors. I am really anxious and depressed so my insomnia isn't soo much better but i do sleep deeper and no panic attacks for me :)

This is pretty relatable. Every time my caffeine addiction gets too bad, I quit for a few months and then repeat the cycle. I think you hit the nail on the head, without caffeine there's more of a baseline. You don't have the highs and the lows, but after 30ish years of lots of caffeine, not having any highs feels kinda meh. It's a tough thing to have a more stable longer lasting overcast day, or to see the sun for a few hours before it becomes stormy.
