I knew Draylen. We went to elementary school together. He mentored my best friend. Initially, I had written out this whole rant about how it took a colossal sucking waste of a person to extinguish the life and light that flowed from Dray's presence, but it felt too focused on his death rather than his life. For anyone who'd like to know exactly how outstanding and talented he was, go listen to a performance of his composition "Hell Fire" - it says more than I ever could.

Draylen was a close friend of my best friend’s son. He was much loved in the community and is sorely missed out here in Austin by those that knew him and those that still hadn’t had the pleasure alike. This young man was well on his way to greatness. His talent and sweet soul are still talked about to this day. My husband and I live in East Austin and I sh!t you not when I say that the whole community was terrified and on edge from day one to the last day. No connections. No correlations. Every time you checked your porch for packages was unnerving. The moment this nightmare was over, the city seemed to hug each other and really come together and radiate love for those that were unjustly lost and harmed.

I live in Austin, and that was a surreal time. For context of how nervous people were towards the end: I was downtown on a Friday night and people just started stampeding down one of the streets yelling to run. I stepped into a side alley because I hadn’t heard anything that would warrant running - turned out it was literally nothing. Just some people began running and it caused a panic. Thanks for covering this. In many ways, I’m glad the story quickly disappeared, because that POS doesn’t deserve to be remembered, but on the other hand, his victims do.

I agree. Even if they wanted to stick with that theory they could have still maybe said it was a theory and added to not open any packages that you weren't expecting. Esperanza's story really stuck with me. I know she survived while others lost their lives, and my deep sympathies go out to the loved ones of those taken during that nightmare. However, that 75 year old Esperanza was caring for her 93 year old mother and was the tiny dynamo that friends and family turned to for strength and support, that this little woman fought like a tiger to survive... It just really really moved me.
@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 11 ай бұрын
I too was very moved by her story, what a fantastic woman. I was so relieved to learn she had lived. But I am angry too - that for 23 years there was literally and metaphorically a ticking time bomb out there, an angry male who would one day try to murder her with such barbarity. And he didn't even know her personally! I suspect that's the problem right there - the fact Mark Conditt didn't know his victims personally, reflected the weirdly isolated life he had led. His parents restricted his access to the world, kept him home and educated him themselves, denying him of the umpteen daily interactions with other humans that are so crucial in creating well-adjusted adults who care about their fellow man and woman. He didn't even begin interacting with life on his own terms as an adult, as he started working for his father's company! This is not healthy. The extreme and bigoted political views he spouted online with such conviction aged 17, were a clue to the type of 'education' he had received from his ultra religious parents. He had clearly become an angry, frustrated young man by the age of 18 - and not surprisingly, there's no evidence of the typical joys most young people enjoy, of friendships and even romances with his peer group. In my view his parents controlling ways damaged him and played a major part in his barbaric crimes. They took a beautiful, innocent baby boy full of potential, and moulded him into someone capable of killing society's most beloved members. Conditt will not be missed - except perhaps by his family. His victims however, will be greatly missed. I am so glad that sweet lady survived - though she will be forever changed by such a cruel and horrific attempt on her life.

As a life-long Austinite: thank you. Thank you for covering this insane, horrible case. It gets overlooked because of how relatively brief it was - and how, at the end, there was just...nothing. The culprit went out the way everyone expected, so there was no chance for the families of the victims to have *anything* at all. A friend of mine had just moved in with us a few months before this started. He biked around a lot. After the second incident (and third, since it was the same day), he told me his plan for if he saw a seemingly out of place or package. Followed by both of us hating how this was a real conversation we needed to have.

I remember this case. Everyone was scared of getting packages. My husband works for The United States Postal Service & at the time of the bombings, he was a Rural Carrier. For a week or so, approx 70% of the residents & approx. 45% of businesses declined all packages. It reminded me of the postal Anthrax case. I worked at the IRS at the time & we had to wear special gloves in order to handle tax forms (this was back when eFile, TurboTax, etc. were brand new) Every time we noticed powder on the forms/envelope or smelled something weird (weirder than urine, feces & vomit which happens a lot more than people think) our building went into immediate lockdown until Hazmat & police cleared everything. It didn’t matter if we lived in or around the area these cases took place, EVERYONE was on edge & overly paranoid. Now that I think of it, the extremely remote possibility of getting a package bomb &/or Athrax in the mail caused more fear across America than contracting Covid or any of it’s mutated Karen offspring.

I find it so wild how I've never heard of this case. I watch a lot of news but can't recall ever seeing coverage about this. I don't doubt that Mark was just a crazy serial killer that had no reason other than he just got his rocks off on murdering people. I'm sure if investigators dug deep enough they'd find some level of "trauma" in his history, but certainly nothing that warrants murdering innocent people. Without knowing who his remaining targets I find it hard to 100% believe they were hate crimes since his 4th bombing was completely random, but I wouldn't doubt it if investigators ever confirmed it. As frustrating as it is that he took the cowards way out, I'm glad he's dead so he wouldn't further waste our time watching him plead not guilty and go through a ridiculous trial about how its all a big misunderstanding. I also don't think killers like him ever have remorse, so a life sentence would barely be punishment for him if he were alive.

A new That Chapter video as my birthday present. Life is good! In all seriousness, I hope the victims are resting peacefully and the families are doing okay. Thanks for the birthday present for me, Mike!

There are others out there, but none come close to the way Mike spins a crime story. He's simply the best! Hmm, that sounds like a song just waiting to be written!

Mike is my very first as well, before Mike I had not a clue about true crime channels. I will be faithful to Mike forever. I love Mikes style ❤❤❤

I lived in Austin during this time, and one of the attacks (the tripwire incident) happened a few miles away from where I lived. The day the d-bag was found, I happened to be driving someone to the airport and the city was SWARMING with officers from every branch of law enforcement. It was a terrifying time, and I refused to pick up packages that were on my porch for weeks afterward. Literally, none of us knew what the shit was happening,

I remember this case! I worked at the Home Depot in Austin near Lakeline at the time, and I remember that my freight team had a meeting to talk about it because he got the supplies for these bombs at one of the Home depots in Austin (Not at our store though). We specifically have training to refuse service to anyone who is buying certain products together because of situations like this one though I can't imagine it's as easy to catch when they use the self checkout. I remember following each time they found a new bomb and the chase with the police and the bomb that he used to end it all. Everyone felt a HUGE amount of relief to know that he wasn't still out there setting more traps.

Did anybody work out how he was able to make bombs so successfully. He wasn't in the army so he just self taught himself? Was there more to the story?

@@matthewmatthew9485it's really not hard to find this information online. But if you're not already handy with electronics and chemistry it's really easy to f yourself up in the attempt. Remember that innocent kid that made a nuclear reactor in his shed out of pure curiosity?

What was the protocol after refusing service? Did you report the incident to police, pull cctv etc?
