Muhammad Ali is recognized by many as the greatest ever not just because of his boxing prowess but because of the influence he had on the whole world itself. Muhammad Ali changed culture, he changed and inspired the world through boxing. With that said, watch this old man (Mike Tyson's coach and father figure) Cus D'Amato school this great.

@@TheBoomtown4 the first thing I was taught by a great boxer, "was to defend yourself at all times", secondly "if you enter the ring underestimating an opponent then arguably you are closer to defeat than you should be!" He also use to say, "keep your guard up at all times,if you haven't got your guard up you are heading for the canvas!" Muhammad Ali in my opinion was the most accomplished boxer at his size that ever boxed, in the real world of boxing he just wouldn't have underestimated an opponent, he would circle away from his opponents strong arm, flicking out his world class jab to keep him at bay! Arguably he could have had that tempo in this situation, his speed would have prevented him being hurt and a jab with no power in it, would have kept the smaller opponent further away, plus that would give Ali the necessary distance for him to slip any and all punches. This was horseplay admittedly, but thats nothing to do with the facts, he underestimated an opponent and didn't take an opponent seriously! The third thing he taught was how to recognise a dirty fighter, (he was a great fighter whose career was cut short by serving honourable during wartime,) he stated that there's nothing worse in a boxing match than someone inflicting punishment on you without the referee "being aware" (he smiled when he said that) or you being able to counter it!

It was just him and 3 guys, me being one of 3. We was at this pool hall, not in a bad neighborhood. I was standing, leaning on my pool stick waiting my turn. I was watching the game and out of no where i hear this voice. I turn and there's this guy, with his pool stick in his hand waving at my face. I said excuss me, not hearing what he said, I'm deaf in my right ear. He repeated himself and said; you think your one of those big wrestling dudes don't you. Now, this is before MMA fighting events was even allowed in the United States. He was referring to professional wrestling. Now he has his hand half down the pool stick and kept waving it my face. He then says he's going to hit me with it. Now I look over his head and see 3 guys huddled together point our direction and chuckling. I'm not worried about the guy with the stick, I'm pissed they knew this going to happen. I look over at them and pointed, then motioned them over with my finger, had loud music and they was across the room. The 3 of them slowly walked over, as there buddy is still threatening me with his pool stick. They get to where they was standing behind him. I said to them does he belong to you. One of the guys was like yeah. I was like did you guys know he was coming over here to do this. Keep in mind the guy is still threatening me with the stick. I looked at the 3 guys and said we have 2 options 1st, you take him and leave and i don't want to see any of you the rest of the night or he hits me with the stick and i beat the ever loving shit out of 3 of you. The 3 guys look over at my buddies that are now sitting down, they knew i didn't need help. I said, they won't be involved it will be me and you 4, so what will it be. 2 of the 3 jumped their buddy and took the stick away from him and dragged him out the door, while the 3rd guy profusely apologized and thank me for not killing them. He takes off out the door after the other guys. By now the bar was looking at us. I turned and looked at my buddies and said whose turn is it. They got up and continued playing. Again standing there waiting, i feel this baseball glove size hand rest on my shoulder. I turn and had to look up to this 6'8" bouncer, huge black guy. My first thought is shit this is going to hurt. Lol. He spoke with this deep deep voice. He said, I've been bouncing for a while, never in my life did i see this happen. He said, man when you called those other 3 guys over, i wasn't worried about dealing with them if shit went down. He said dude, you was cold as steel, no sign of worry. Then instead of your boys standing to get ready to fight they sat down. That's when I knew you would a tough fight. However, glad to meet you this way and i appreciate how you handle that. I thanked him we shook hands he walked away. A minute later a waitress showed up and gave me a beer, she said the drinks are on the house for me, anything i want. I looked over at the bouncer, he tilted his glass and nodded. I gestured back in kind. That's one of many fights i avoided. Oh yeah, I was 6'3" 245 lbs had 3 hour a night workout routine, if i wasn't training in some style or another. Besides martial arts, my next door neighbor was golden gloves boxer, he trained me in boxing. 👋

I used to do boxing training, the instructor was an elderly ex area lightweight champ. Every session finished with five minutes in the ring with him, I never saw anyone lay a glove on him, he would pop up and tap you on the side of your face. Cuss wasn't making a prediction that peekaboo would have be in Ali's counter punching style he was making the argument that somebody who pursues in an orthodox manner. More specifically has the discipline to not allow themselves to be bated into Ali's countering set-ups Ali would really struggle. I don't think Tyson would have been a good matchup. People like to say that because Tyson is the only boxer they can remember who was crazy powerful and crazy aggressive. But Ali thought that in Foreman, most of you guys only remember Foreman when he made his comeback but if you look at the old footage of Foreman when he was young he was a f-ing machine. Complete powerhouse. He used to literally rip heavy bags open during training. Tyson would have been just as easily ropa doped as Foreman was maybe even easier. Tyson was known for not having great control of his temper and baiting people into hyper-aggressive actions that left them open to a knockout was kind of Ali's game. An example of what causes talking about is what happened to King Naseem. Spend a minute Google that guy's story. He was like Ali he's a counter-puncher with a big mouth who caused a lot of problems outside the ring just so that he could rile the guy up and get him to head hunt him inside the ring and then you know use that to his advantage. He was known for having what looked like to an untrained eye super natural head movement, it was all a trick it was setting the person up so that he could duck out of the way just in time and then catch them with a shot on the return. Perfect counter-punching technique. Same kind of idea I'll use it makes you look like you're super fast and unnaturally light on your feet. Obviously you're not no one is but like forcing the other guy to do what you want him to do can easily make it look like you can predict what he's going to do. Cusses arguing if he faces somebody with enough discipline to not do what you want him to do even when you make it really really tempting would result in a loss. And that's exactly what happens to Kingdom this Mexican boxer comes in with an orthodox style and he doesn't pursue anytime the same gives them that opening he just lets it go and then just beat him into the ground. It took like 10 rounds but he eventually wore him into the dust, the dude never even boxes again after that.

The archetypal structure of the style and the technique of Cus D’Amato’s training also proved to be identical to the Neapolitan fencing” Lee may have seen this, and been influenced by it, as Lee himself abandoned most of Wing Chun, and adopted Western Boxing and Fencing structures for late stage JKD, as he sometimes described it as fist and foot fencing.

I replayed the first part of their interaction SO many times. Even their pawing at each other is a masterful throw and counter, even when Cus receives the first "punch" his hand goes to Ali's elbow and forearm so casually and effortlessly. Cus switching of defensive tactics is absurd. He goes from using a long guard with a constant but light rhythm to disrupt alis flurry, holds the center, follows the rotation and then into feint low. A one eye old man and an absolute legend.

No it isn't? Mike had lots of weight shifts and foot movement/twisting to build momentum but most of his shots were hooks and uppers. Here Cus is just stab jabbing Ali and guiding him into an unprotected moment . He's extending in a way to max his jab distance and it's something Mike never did unless his opponent was backpedaling away and Mike was chasing them for a finishing shot. The only thing Cus is doing here that was like Mike's style was keeping his right fist over a well-tucked chin and staying low to make as small a target as possible but even then he's keeping his left arm extended and not using peekaboo.

@@conorhaddock3956 do you have any idea who Cus D'Amato is? He trained Mike Tyson in the peek a boo style that made Mike the youngest Heavyweight champion in history. At 5' 11" he dominated men who were 2 to 6 inches taller with longer reach. Cus not only taught Mike that style he was able to do it himself. Something the vast majority of coaches can't do. He and Ali were just playing around, but if you think Ali meant to allow that old man to put a soft quick shot on his face, you would be incorrect. That was the greatest boxer ever, interacting with arguably the greatest boxing coach ever. Go back to what you know, Japanese cartoons.

He was surprised about the jab but was his friend who he respected and so just let his friend get him and then feel good about it especially with his face in the pic lol. I knew an older gentleman who once told me you could be put dizzy before the hit. I said how can that happen. He demonstrated the move by going low then making an (S) shape forcing on the eyes. The move made your eyes go side to side (vertigo). The opponent would get dizzy and the punch would put them down. He said the old timer fighters used this technique. I've seen Mike Tyson do this in the ring. Great old time technique. I want to add to this story that the gentleman demonstrated the move on me. Yes my eyes went cross side and I got off balance. Some film makers used this technique in film making. In today's games its called motion blur. In some games you have to turn this down or you will get dizzy. How it work is (example in a racing game) your eye will be pulled to a corner turn by the camera. This is suppose to give you a really experience turning. However all it does is make your stomach sick. Turn it off if your kids are playing these games. Once at the movie theater a whole lot of people were throwing up after a knife scene. The technique was to have the camera go slow then fast. This would cause motion blur.

I met Cus in the late 1960's in a house along with Floyd Patterson. Cus trained my father in the late 1940's right after WW2. I met Ali in Deer Lake and have pictures of him with my son. My dad was a friend of Angelo Dundee from his time in training in NYC.

I just now saw the techniques that he taught iron Mike. He showed to stay low and attack with a jab to the body then you'd have enough leverage to power up a punch coming upwards using a lunge to enforce body weight into the punch

Not enough has been said or documented about Cus D'Amato. A through documentary of Cus should be made. The men he inspired. Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson went on to be the greatest in Boxing. So few realize that it was all Cus D'Amato in the background that made these great men in boxing what they were. For both men it was coming to grips with their ID. That Shakespear wrote about in the Tempest. Cus brought the Classical to the Street then to the ring. Where now Mohamned and Mike now reign Supreme. These are the legends of the Ring.
