The only real canon are movies, everything else can easily be retconned or thrown out of the "canon", this is why these short stories are loosely connected to the main sotryline and don't really change anything in the universe. Vader managed to survive without his life support system before. A legend story where he meets vision of Padme and collapses a whole temple on himself. He was running around and fighting people without helmet, because the Dark Side kept him alive. Kinda like Darth Sion could keep his fractured body together, because the suffering he felt made him stronger in the Dark Side so it was a nice loop going on.

Chewie barely fought off a weakened Vader, and if the fight had really continued, Vader still would have killed him. Vader is an absolute powerhouse in canon, with so many feats of power that put him far above basically everyone else.
