When Detailing Doesn't Go As Planned
A stunning Flame Orange Bentley GTC was in to receive a 2 stage Minor Correction with wheels off work, fabric hood protection, Modesta coatings etc etc... It wasn't until I got 40% of the way round with the cutting stage that I realised the OSR wing had been left in a pretty bad way! (wish I took a PROPER look a lot earlier on)
With two main burn throughs on the panel and every edge having been compromised from previous polishing attempts, it was at this point i put the tools down and packed away! The car's been taken away and will return once the repair work has been completed. Stay tuned for Part 2!

Always good to have evidence of what’s going on with the car and paintwork. Schoolboy error if you didn’t do it. Some are easy to point the finger and blame you when it was the dealer not taking care of the car for their client. They’re just looking at the numbers of cars pushed out the door, not quality. You’re all about quality. That I respect and admire. Not many are, even the ones that are in your line of work. Great video. Looking forward to the next ones.

Hi Jim. The N/S/F wing, the marks on the paint are caused by the sheeting but the defects are caused by the car being sheeted up and then baked in the booth when the car is wet. The sheet sticks the water when baked and that’s what caused the marks. The drivers door, when you said it’s been painted on the edge, it has indeed but they have lipped it off the line by the door handle and then blown in half of the door, why they would do that and not paint the whole door I don’t know but I just thought I’d let you know, I’m not criticising because I love your work and attention to detail. Working in a body shop I see these problems daily which I have to rectify. Keep up the excellent work Jim. 👍🏻

I work at a Bentley dealer in the States and by eye looking at the door edge and other bits. It looks like an outside spot repair not body shop work. That would explain why the door is not blended properly. Amazing job cleaning it up! Keep up the good work👍🏻

Jim my Man, I feel your pain. I had a customer a year or 2 back who was involved in a multi car accident. She wasn’t at fault but her car I had previously corrected and coated needed major repairs and after these repairs, I was asked to correct the repaired work and recoat the areas. My customer was told the passenger rear wing and bumper had been replaced. I took the work and started my work. Little did I know that after starting the correction process working on the rear bumper last I would find that the drivers rear wing had been repainted aswel, not only this but I would find a burn through on both doors, and damage to the ceramic coating due to over lapping onto the doors. This meant I had to remove the coating. Correct all the paintwork again, but more then that. The car needed returning for the burn throughs on the door edges to be repaired. Fortunately I had also documented the issues and this helped the insurance get the car sorted.

The marks on the wing are referred to by us painters as “sweat marks”. It’s where any trace water under the sheeting evaporates during the bake cycle and gets trapped between the panel and the sheet and sticks it to the car

I thought I would change my original question around. Normally I would watch your videos and take certain parts from them to use myself, but I thought my question would be aimed at you this time. What have you learned from your experience with the Bentley? Do you now assess cars in a slightly different way now instead of a quick gloss over? I come from a car mechanics background and now in the health and safety industry. There are similarities between the 2 where planning of work and assessing work before starting can pay off later on. It's like the saying goes, measure twice, cut once!!

Also a tip from an old fart....I wear knee pads when wrenching. Sure your knees don't feel the shock now but it will catch up to you down the road. Cheers.

The line on the fender is because they've painted the lower part again i would figure. Reason they did could be they painted "a runner" in the clear coat and cut through it after. Besides this, there are alot off silicone points in the same fender, such poor repaint... Reason for the small part of color difference on the door is because they didn't mix the right color properly, this is an "pearl" color, wich means it has probably mutliple layers of color and/or different layers before the color is painted. They tried to "paint out" the color instead of painting the whole door in clear coat after the color was painted. Not a proper way to fix and paint a car, specially for such luxury and expensive car...
