Kids that grew up on power of the force 2 just don't know how much cooler our OT toys were. That line was goofy with figures as buff as Prince Adam. Why?😆

Yeah, they were interesting but you got to admit that they looked pretty cool. I appreciate the originals, even had many of the originals and still have all the Hoth themed Mini Rigs totally restored! But, I really like the POTF2 figures because they had rich detail. They had all the look and feel of the characters from all the original movies and even came with the authentic weapons they actually used in the film. They had an added point of articulation and didn't suffer from ( aside from the Hogan level of buffness ) film based inaccuracy like Walrus Man who later became Ponda Bobba. If you look at that original 1978 figure he wasn't wearing his orange jacket just a sporting instead an orange torso piece with some sort of strange jumper with Walrus Man having yellow eyes with black pupils instead of having black eyes like he is supposed to have. Although I really appreciate vintage Star Wars toys from that era along with Kenner's original ideas going into each product, the bottom line is the 90's era of toys weren't all that bad at all, they just get a bad reputation for a single reason rather than get a full look at everything else they had going for them. We 90's kids at least didn't have to suffer with all that yellow saber stuff you guys did growing up... Even if that retractable saber function was totally awesome and jealous 90's kids like myself missed out on. :)
@JamesThames1987
@JamesThames1987 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, the reason why they were so buff was that at the time the Star Wars line was dead in the water after 1985 so in the 90's Star Wars to many young kids like myself at that time didn't know what Star Wars was. It was something old trying to fit into a new world where everyone who was a kid in the day was high on super heros. Super heros were all the rage in the 90's. So, to compete with old time collectors demands they had to give the adult collectors what they wanted while at the same time having to give something back to the kids. Kenner's answer to that? Make the figures look like super heros to sell to kids who didn't know what Star Wars was or would probably even care about. Just make them buff and kids will want'em. I however saw Star Wars first in 94' before the second/first wave would come out in 95' and I will agree that even as a kid I wasn't too crazy about the masculine thing but it did let me have fun playing with them as if they knew how to fight in hand to hand combat. ( Yeah, having old ass Obi-Wan Kenobi beating up on Darth Vader with his bare hands seemed pretty stupid looking back. )

I had the Death Star playset. I was thrilled to finally see the trash monster in its entirety! And I'll mention this even though it's only tangentially related: I bought a Sith Speeder from the _Phantom Menace_ line in 1999 simply because it had Darth Maul with double lightsaber and removable cloak, which you could not get separately.

I think all of the MASK vehicles and playsets came with figures. A few of the figures were also sold separately (with some accessories), but these figures were always colored differently from the main ones that came with vehicles. Scott Trakker came with T-Bob, which is a robot that turns into a vehicle.

I was going to say this also - each one came with their custom "mask" (VR interface helmet), and like you say most of the figures were gotten by getting the vehicle. I had the main bad guy and his helicopter/plane and the good guy with the motorcyle that could fly. :P

You would be 100% Right... Those "playsets" with figures were Sear's exclusives. They would include three of four of next year's action figures, ones you couldn't get in stores yet. I think the new figures would launch in summer or late spring, then in late September the Wishbook would come out. That includes the cardboard "cantina" and "Bespin" playsets, and the repurposed plastic bases. I did get the Hoth package, but not the dungeon packages.

This is a rare oddity the 1996 TIE Interceptor Pilot George Lucas head STAR WARS Micro Machines ACTION FLEET Figure. Removable helmet with George Lucas head. Was basically an Easter egg figure. Super small. I had this toy it came with 2 pilots but one pilot had a removable helmet and when the helmet came off it blew my mind. Definitely worth a mention if not a whole episode about this toy. A great mid-80s memory of mine involves a local toy shop that was keen to clear out a whole lot of Star Wars toys now that the craze was fading. They taped action figure blister packs to vehicle and playset boxes for sale with them - basically doing at a local level what Kenner had done more widely. And whoever did the work knew what they were doing by adding appropriate figures, usually army builders, to each box.

GI Joe’s had numerous vehicles that came with drivers. Might have been part of the price point differentials. Then with some of the bigger stuff a three dollar figure was not going to make much difference on the overall price at the end. Tactical battle platform was one that was medium sized but had no figure, at a time a decent amount of em were coming with figure included. I would have to take a few dive, but now that I think about it, play sets, bases etc were not sold with figures, just the medium and larger sized vehicles.

Empire Toys' Legends of the West line always included a figure with the various wagons they sold (stagecoach, buckboard, covered wagon, peddler's wagon, fire wagon). Normally, this was a fully carded random figure (the way I got duplicates when I was little, as it would just be some figure tossed inside the box for the wagon/vehicle. However, for the Fire Wagon, it came with an exclusive figure of a western firefighter, which meant a variant of an existing figure with a red shirt and black vest (not found on any of the rest of the line). There were even three variants there, with the Firemen being repaints of the Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, and Bill Hickok figures. I'm sure others will point out things like the Wild Bill helicopter pilot coming with the GI Joe helicopter (I know the vehicles there had specific names, but I wasn't a GI Joe guy).

1:45 WOW! Great Challenge... Obviously I was born in 1973 so I grew up with a fair few... HOWEVER, Most sets I owned that came with an Action Figure - They were Rarely Exclusives... You could almost always buy the figure on card on its own! I do know from watching various Vintage Toy Channels that GI JOE and ACTION FORCE here in the UK had some "Exclusive" Figures that came with Vehicles - Later released as Stand Alones... But I didn't collect either when I was a kid! 5:01WAIT! OH WAIT! The Land of the Jawas Sand crawler Playset - That Carboard thing... I HAD THIS! Here in the UK, PALITOY did include a JAWA with this set! I only know as the Christmas I had this set - My Parents would always do their best to try and put things on Display (Mainly as often the Star Wars stuff they managed to get me was not always brand new... But I didn't care! Life was tough and money was tight - To have these Star Wars toys at all was AMAZING!) and the Jawa Sand crawler Playset was one of the few things that came WITH ITS BOX - It does help that this had already been pretty much discontinued at the time so was being sold at Discount Stores as it was only a year away from Empire being released... I dont know why... I was OBSESSED With Jawa's - They were my Boba Fett before we ever heard of Boba Fett!

I remember all of those Star Wars toys, but don't remember any of those special versions with the included figures. That's probably because I've got the earliest versions of all my vehicles and play sets. I usually got a Star Wars toy as soon as it was available in stores. I know of a few other toy brands that included figures with their vehicles/play sets. Mego sold a few Micronauts with vehicles. I have the Crater Cruncher with a blue Time Traveler. I also have the CHiPs Highway Patrol Launcher and Motorcycle with a Ponch figure. I have a similar play set with a miniature Six Million Dollar Man and Bigfoot. Mego also had a special edition of the Star Trek Enterprise with action figures inside. They did the same with the Batcave and the smaller Comic Action and Pocket Super Heroes vehicles. My sister once had the Glamour Gals cruise ship (also made by Kenner) loaded with Glamour Gal figures inside. She no longer has the cruise ship but still has all the dolls. Her daughter has played with them. Kenner also did a Family Tree House with the family members and family dog included. Fisher Price did a Sesame Street play set with figures, Child Guidance did a Kentucky Fried Chicken play set, and there was also a Gilligan's Island play set with Gilligan, Mary Ann, and Skipper figures. I have them all.

I got the Dagobah Playset that came with 3 free figures, Bespin Luke, Vader, and Yoda. I also had the Cantina Adventure set and the Hoth Rebel Command Center. I always wanted the Bespin set though because they never did make any other Bespin playset.

Here's a bit of an outside the box. You'll notice many of the G1 Transformers toys had seats for drivers, pilots, and operators, especially the command centre in Optimus' trailer. If you were lucky enough to come upon a Diaclone version of some of these in big grocery stores, they came with little figures ..inside the box! That's like a figure that comes with a figure! (Headmasters don't count.) I tried to use my little Spacelink figures, but either their feet were too big or their bulbous helmets were too tall. And I'll never forget the day my mom watched me open up my (generic Shockwave) Galactic Man, and the first thing she did was point out his impressive Dirk Diggler appendage. Bought at a Farm Fresh, not a Radio Shack. (I sware his name was Astro Man.)

I know a lot of the newer stuff came with pilots. The larger X-wings came with figures. Wedge Antilles' X-wing and Red Leader. I also have a TIE fighter with an Alliance logo that came with Derek "Hobbie" Klivian.

5:37: Modulok you have to put together and that’s an action figure. There’s also Multi-Bot as well. Is it the last 15 though? I mean there’s three of them in a 1984 box! “Every toy should come with a figure, any play set, especially if it’s a vehicle as it needs a pilot, that should be the rule.” I agree! That rule would have stopped many toylines from dying out, including Kenner Star Wars. Talk about a missed opportunity as The Power Of The Force II had a figure packed in with pretty much every vehicle you could think of.

The Kay Bee Toys in my local mall sold C-3P0 carry cases with three carded POTF figures taped to the outside. Like they were trying to sell off excess stock or something. What I hated was that some of them had figures I was looking for to buy alone, but the store didn't have them on the pegs. I would have had to buy another 3P0 case and two figures I already had just to get the one I wanted. Or just keep checking back, which is what I did.

I always liked the Cobra H.I.S.S. Tank and its driver. Also, I had a Jinx figure, but I wasn't crazy about her legs. One day, I came upon someone's box (giggity) of junked G.I. Joe pieces & parts, and inside was a pair of H.I.S.S. Tank driver legs. I swapped Jinx's fluffy pants and pumps for those mean C.F.M. boots, and BOOM! She's a total baddass now.

Great video Junkman. Fisher Price Adventure People vehicles came with figures.Lots of repaints in the line.May make a great video? Back in the 70's there was line made by Matchbox named MAC Mobile Action Command that included figures with the vehicles and rescue center playset.If I remember correctly the figures were between 2 or 2 1/2 inches tall with 7 poa.Cool line.

I had gotten the Bespin with figures playset for Christmas 1980, probably. I had seen one of the Cantina playset at Sears maybe 1978, and as I had been looking for it for a long time (in kid years,) I was thrilled, only to find out someone opened it and stole the figures.

That Darth Vader case was a nightmare, I took it to school for show and tell and all the weapons fell out and I lost them. Didn't realize until I got home. That compartment was the worst. The case doesn't close with a proper fit so all the guns fell out the seams. THANKS KENNER! I had like three heart attacks that day thanks to Kenner's cheapness. Whenever I try to sell the case at my local comic book store they refuse to buy and and then point to a largish pile they already have because everyone hates that terrible thing. The C3P0 one too

Those collector cases were bad. The other one that had the two trays was much better at keeping the loose accessories in, at least for me. I was practically Sheldon Cooper with my stuff as a kid, until my mom decided my younger brother was old enough to play with the SW collection I had... I lost pretty much my entire vintage figure collection quite slowly..a figure here, a lightsaber there.. I’m not mad. No, I’m not mad when I see the value of some of the figures loose w/accessories.. 🤬

Here in Canada all my Christmas presents and Star Wars toys came from the Sears wishbook too. Here it was Simpsons Sears not Sears Roebuck. I remember picking out the snow speeder and being so excited when I got it. I still have my twin pod cloud car with the bespin guard but his head fell off.

Land of the Jawas came with a free Yoda here in Canada (right before empire when they were clearing out starwars stuff to make room for empire)....because as I ranted on your stormtrooper shortage video WE WERE DROWNING IN YODA'S! it didn't actually say on the box which figure it just said with free figure...i opened about 50 boxes to try and find a figure i wanted....they were either all yoda or almost all yoda....then my dad showed up and saw me looking for a better figure....he grabbed a bobafett put it in the box and took out the yoda. The included figures were on card not in kenner baggies. Only ever got kenner baggie figures as part of a mail away offer.
