Kerry Von Erich defeated Nature Boy Ric Flair at the 1984 Parade of Champions event (promoted by Fritz Von Eric and World Class Championship Wrestling) . The event was in memory of David Von Erich, a man who was originally scheduled to win the NWA championship before his untimely passing.
Von Erich vs Flair isn't talked about much due to Kerry's subsequent title run failing to gain traction. Kerry lost the NWA championship in a matter of weeks with some stating that Kerry wasn't reliable. However, Kerry was still able to build a career for himself that also led to the WWF Intercontinental Championship a few years down the road.
This video looks at the circumstances leading up to the Flair vs Von Erich match in the Texas stadium, the NWA title bout itself, and Kerry's short title run.

I've said much of this before, I'm not the biggest wrestling fan in the world but there is something fascinating about the behind the scene aspect of wrestling. Your pieces are always great, well-written and well-presented. You capture the tone of each situation from the ridiculous to the tragic. From ground-breaking events to the personal side of the story. I've seen several recounts of this situation and many ignore much of the in-ring aspect. Your video is shorter than some but feels more comprehensive. Your videos are often funny but I love the respect and dignity you show the performers when they deserve it. Thank you.

It was a period of What If during this 1982- 84 period. What if David lived and he did become World Champion. What if Verne Gagne took the risk and made Hulk Hogan Champion in 1982. What if the Oil Industry never bottomed out and Mid South showcased Ted Dibiase as their top guy and their candidate for the World Title. Where would Vince be? A fascinating tale.

One of the many reasons why Flair is the greatest of all time. He had no problem dropping the belt in situations like this. And it never damaged his standing. Could you imagine Hogan being asked to drop the belt to Kerry? "That doesn't work for me, brother!" and it would end in some schmoz DQ heel run-in with the two of them fighting off the baddies and Hogan keeping the belt while doing the flexing and posing with Kerry in the end.

Kerry Von Erich held the NWA title for 18 days. 13 defenses, in 3 states, 2 countries, & 2 double shots. He defended the NWA title the following two days after he won it in 1984. I doubt he ever missed an NWA title defense. Someone, a promoter or wrestler, somewhere would have come forward and talked about it by now 40 years later. It's just bitterness. Rest In Peace Champ.

Im from east Texas and grew up watching the Von Erichs and Kerry was always the biggest star of the promotion. David was great but there's a lot of re-written history after his death about David being the man. Also Kerry didn't miss any shots and he was a fantastic and a realistic wrestle especially before his foot amputation, and should have had a lot longer reign with the NWA belt, because he would definitely bring in the young guys who looked up to him, and the women who fantasized about him. If you ask me Flair was just jealous of Kerry and after his death he never misses an opportunity to throw shade his way, because he damn sure wouldn't have done it while he was alive that's for sure. I'm also sure the backside was Flair's idea to give himself an out with Kerry just getting lucky, and catching a quick one on him. He should have passed the torch the right way and submitted when Kerry had the Claw on him.

This might be my favorite non-monday night war video in quite a while (that doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed the videos released). I liked this look back at a very historic match that wasn't a non-televised WWF match or something like that. I hope this can become a series of sorts. "Historic matches, cards or night we may not know about or may not know the history of" Great video! I look forward to the next!

Von Erich family is such a tragedy

While the individual deaths are sad, the real tragedy, at least in my mind, is that Fritz never disciplined them and tried to get them the help they so obviously needed... But hey, at least we still have Kevin.

It was interesting what Gary Hart said about the Von Erich’s in the WWE doc about WCCW that the brothers should have gone out and found their own way away from their family if that happened maybe they might still be around today

Yeah even if they decided to go into wrestling off their own back they all could have been successful elsewhere I still remember Kerry as the Texas Tornado as IC Champion and teaming with Warrior and the LOD at the 1990 Survivor Series That was only a short period but it was good

@philipglover3295 what really kinda bothered me was the press conference after Mike's toxic shock and Kevin's there crying thankful his brother's still alive then fritz said something to the affect of "No doubt Mike WILL be back in the ring" or something like that. 5 brothers 3 commit suicide I'm not blaming fritz or his wife but there seems to be something underlying in that fact

Kerry's title reign was agreed in advance to be short lived. Jim Crockett demanded Flair have it in hand for the May 29, 1984 Night of Champions defense vs. Ricky Steamboat at the Meadowlands, New Jersey. In those days, one NWA territory didn't report on another. This allowed a wrestler to work heel in one and face in another. Kerry's title change was mostly mentioned in Florida. As the biggest NWA territory, Jim Crockett's Mid Atlantic often worked as if it was the only NWA territory and monopolized the NWA champion by 1986. Kerry's title reign was effectively the last decided by the NWA committee. Once Flair regained it, he remained the traveling champion til February 1986; after that the title never left Jim Crockett Promotions.

the other wrestlers loved david because david would stand up to fritz. he would speak up for them, they felt comfortable going to him with issues they might've had. not to say they didn't like kevin, kerry, mike or chris, but they weren't going to say anything to fritz.

Pretty sure Fritz got David killed for that exact reason, covering it up as an intestinal explosion / drug overdose

Another bonus bios! I wasn’t around/aware of WCCW, as I got into wrestling around 1990 with wrestle mania 6 (and whatever was going on in WCW at that time) I only knew of the “Texas Tornado” (not knowing of the history), and always wondered how HE was the champion of the rival (as he was never more than a mid carder in WWF) Looking forward to the movie being made (even if I’m sure it will be incredibly depressing)

vince knew eventually kerry was going to go back to dallas. it wasn't an "if" but a "when". there were rumors they taped a match of him losing the ic title a few days after he won it, just to have it in the bag in case he left in the middle of his reign. IF (caps cuz it's a big "if") vince believed he had kerry locked in with no chance of him going back to texas, me might've gotten elevated to the main event scene. (also provided he limited his fanny pack activities.)

Such a shame World Class stopped it NWA interaction soon after Crocket became national on TBS. Can you imagine Dusty bringing in Kevin and Kerry to help fight the horsemen and the horsemen showing up in Dallas. The Von Erichs vs the Minnesota Wrecking Crew would have been awesome.

As a young kid in 1984, I was always confused why Kerry von Erich had such a short title reign as NWA champion. This documentary is really informative. It's really sad that Kerry von Erich could not overcome his substance abuse issues, he could have been one of the the all-time greats in professional wrestling.
