WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE, out now on DVD and Blu-Ray!
mad.mn/marniehv
Twelve-year-old Anna believes she sits outside the invisible magic circle to which most people belong, and shuts herself off from everyone around her.
Concerned for her health, Anna's foster mother decides to send her to rural Hokkaido to stay in a sleepy town by the sea. As she dreams her days away amongst the marshes, Anna finds herself strangely drawn to the enigmatic house which sits upon the edge there. This is where she meets Marnie, an energetic young girl who seems to appear from nowhere. The pair quickly becomes inseparable.
One evening, Marnie makes a heartfelt request of Anna: "Promise me something - that we'll remain a secret, forever." Anna begins to wonder about her newfound friend and is compelled to investigate the truth about her. As she is drawn deeper into Marnie's world, she begins to learn about family, friendship and kindness.
Based on the beloved novel by Joan G. Robinson, WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE is the latest film from Studio Ghibli, and the second feature film by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of ARRIETTY.

Studio Ghibli movies are like fine wines.. When you see them you'll like them but what touches your feelings the most is after you've finished watching them. They have an "aftertaste" that stays in your heart.

The part where Marnie was asking for forgiveness, apparently there was a deeper meaning behind it. I saw a comment say that she was not only apologizing for leaving Anna at the silo, but for also leaving her (when Marnie passed away) in the world

Nobody talks about Anna's eyes, when the film started the first question I asked myself was "From whom did she get such beautiful blue eyes?" and I was able to glimpse the connection beyond the storyline and loved the story about two souls connecting through time. Since the "Grave of the fireflies" that I had not cry so much with a Studio Ghibli film, I love all of them but I have a special place for "When Marnie was there" because it's about those who are gone but who are alive in our hearts and memories.

Me too.... because the reason Anna forgave her was because Marnie died when she was still a baby. At first we think Marnie is saying sorry for leaving her at the silo but in reality she's saying "Sorry I wasn't around because I died when you were only two." Marnie lost her daughter Emily who was always angry at her and then she didn't have a real chance to take care of Anna either. Devastating but so beautiful.

Out of all the Studio Ghibli movies I've watched, this made me cry the most. The ending was bittersweet and I love how the MC finally got real happiness by the end. Depression is not an easy topic to discuss, much more PTSD that can lead to forgetting and altering memories in the process of trying to face them all and actually moving forward to become better, to finally free oneself from the sadness one holds in his or her heart. This movie did it in a very beautiful and emotional, but not angsty and irritating way, and may I add, the mystery element is just wonderfully done. The entire time, you'll think of one thing "Just who is Marnie?" And the ending will reveal it and I can assure you that it's not your ordinary psychological theme movie. By the end you'll realize that every scene and line, literally everything that happened, makes sense. The plot twist is just sooo great. This movie is a masterpiece.

I kinda relate to the story. 2 yrs ago I discovered the song Fine on the Outside when I had my clinical depression. I didnt know it was a theme song from a Ghibli anime so I was delighted since i loved anime for more than 10 yrs now. The song is just basically my life getting summarized so i called it my "life song". I also had a rough childhood; I got bullied and i hated myself. My aunt basically raised me since mom and dad were frequently away because of mom's disease. I lost her eventually and I only had one friend growing up. It's like Marnie's my spiritual anime character at this point.

@Julienne Sabijon Hey, I hope you are fine now. I suffered from depression many years (not anymore gladly) and I also feel very connected to the soundtrack of this movie. It has been a while since I’ve seen this movie but after listening to the soundtrack a lot, I kind of feel that the songs were written from the perspective of someone with depression. I want to watch the movie again soon and see if depression was actually subtly addressed in the movie. I could be mistaken though... It’s just that the lyrics describe a lot how I felt before.. I really hope you are better now and have healed from your past.. lots of love from someone who has experienced something similar♥️

It is a beautiful movie. The story was good, the artwork was gorgeous.. but what made this movie so unique was its atmosphere and how it portrayed the main characters emotions. This movie had a great impact on me, because I could relate so much to the protagonists feelings. It made me cry but also comforted me. That is why I recomend all of you to give this movie a try. Even though the greatest directors of the studio weren't involved in its making, this movie is in no way inferior to the other masterpieces of this studio. On the contrary.. for me it gained a special place on the top of my all time favorite list. This movie will either be an enjoyable movie or a masterpiece.. It depends on you. But either way, you should watch it! :)

It's a shame to see that many people don't understand the platonic "I love you.” 11/29/20 Edit: I was stupid when I made this comment. There are VERY clear romantic undertones (yup...) which made this trailer look like it was for a lesbian romance film. I cannot blame anyone for thinking so.

@@DarkSunGameplay actually it doesn't mean romance lmao. Especially not in this case. Anna and Marnie end up being related so if you really think that they meant it in a romantic way you're gross lmao :/ either way, telling someone you love them doesn't always mean they're in love with them. I tell my friends I love them all the time but I don't want to date them. And people tell their parents they love them too. If you hear someone tell their relative they love them and your mind goes to romance you genuinely need help...

@SagetheWise well being bi if someone mistakes me for a homophobe then I don't really care? Because I know I'm obviously not and if someone accuses me of being one I can explain to them that I literally can't be homophobic lol. Also, if they weren't related I would ship them too; but when people ship these two characters it's really upsetting to me because of the fact they're related. But don't get me wrong lol, I love me some good lgbt representation, but this isn't lgbt representation and it bothers me over how many people don't realize that. I love when people speculate and make up headcanons for characters they believe might be lgbt, but when they're canonically related it makes me uncomfortable :/
@kuhntzzz
@kuhntzzz 4 жыл бұрын
@@DarkSunGameplay oh gosh, I'm so sorry ahh. I thought you saw the movie and said the "I love you" was romantic even though you knew they were related. I didn't know you never saw it, I'm so so so sorry for the spoilers !!!! I won't reveal how they're related though, and there is another twist and it's an amazing movie and I really recommend you see it still !!! But I'm assuming the people who are gay and homophobic are in denial about the fact they're gay or it's probably internalized homophobia from past experiences that made them hate themselves like that. If anyone just assumes I'm homophobic without letting me explain themselves, then I won't feel bad at all. That's their own fault for not giving me the time of day to be honest, and again it doesn't bother me because I'm not trying to prove to the world how accepting of the lgbt community I am, being lgbt myself haha. So again if people think that, it genuinely doesn't bother me because I know that I'm not and I'll be happy to explain to people why. When I meet gay people filled with internalized homophobia, I don't feel hateful towards them like I would a straight homophobe. I feel sorry for them because there was probably so many defining factors in their lives that made them end up hating themselves that much.

SKY You have a good point though I love you does not always mean romance and that’s the point you were trying to make. I love my mother. I tell her that. SPOILER ALERT During the movie from the moment I saw Marnies eyes I knew something was up and my guess was that Marnie was her mother so the final reveal was truly a surprise. I always wondered what if Marnie was alive, they would have had the most beautiful grandma-grandchild relationship ever? Not that Anna's aunt or Yuriko not love her but that relationship would have been so fulfilling for both Marnie and Anna, specialy for Marnie since the one thing she ever wanted was to have a loving relationship with her child. Marnie loved her granddaughter so much but got to spend so little time with her. When Anna was seeing 12 year old Marnie it wasn't just in her dreams, it was actually her grandma or more like Anna's granmas love for her and a part of her spirit that was left behind when she passed just manifesting into a physical form that Anna could see, hear and feel, I like to think of in this way because that means Marnie actually got to spend a little time with her grandaughter and her soul can rest In piece now knowing that her love for Emily and Anna were finally recognized atleast by one of them (Anna). Marnie only had a few people that recognized her value, Hisako, Kazuhiko and now Anna. What a beautiful story, this movie will forever be close to my heart, also the scenery of the marsh, the moon at night, the mansion just.... Wow... this is not art this is idk what to call these Ghibli animations, just... Wow same with every ghibli movie, hits different fr! These movies show the imperfectly perfect beauty of humanity, love, nature and life. Thank you Mr.Miyazaki and everyone at Ghibli 🙏🏽

I wish I had a friend to whom I can look right into her eyes when talking to her and not be awkward. I am 15 and I don't know how it feels like having a friend. Anna was really relatable. I know it's my fault for being like this. My dad was an introvert too in his school days so he supports me a lot so I'mreally thankful. It's been 2 months since the school started but I only attended the classes for 2 weeks in total. I always tell myself IT'S OKAY TO NOT HAVE FRIENDS IT'S OKAY IF I'M ALONE IN SCHOOL but on the inside it's not. I always stay up all night just scrolling through yt because i can't sleep thinking about my future. I most of the time convince myself i don't need any friends. Family is enough for me. But I always wonder what would it be like if I had a friend. And I always wish I could change myself.
