Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! Tonight, we rewind the clock to 2008. With Roy Jones Jr fresh off a significant defeat to Antonio Tarver and a surprising victory against Félix Trinidad, he wants to prove to the world he's still got it by challenging the 46 and 0 "Pride of Wales" Joe Calzaghe.

Joe's run at the end of his career when he beat Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins and then Roy is what defined him as a fighter. So rare that all of a top champion's defining wins come at that stage but Joe did it. On top of that with his dad by his side all the way. There's a reason everyone in the UK loves Calzaghe.

@@xDreMackexactly, this dude Jeff doesn't know what he's talking about. Calzaghe wasn't avoided by Roy. Calzaghe spent most of his time in Europe scared to leave the East and fight where most of the popular boxing matches were fought, America. When talking about boxers that are the greatest of all-time of any particular weight class, nobody mentions Joe Calzaghe at all. His name is never brought up. Why? Because he was an overrated undefeated fighter. Had he fought Roy in his prime, Roy would have tore his behind up.

I honestly thought Roy would demolish Calzaghe. I wouldn't call Calzaghe an all time great, despite his record. When you fight a majority of your career in the UK you can't be an all time great. You have to travel and fight the best IN THEIR PRIME. Calazaghe fought all but 3 of his fights in the UK. That's the definition of a protected fighter. @CarlNipmuc I said many, not most; Trinidad or Pavlik are both considered to be the best by most fans who have followed his career, and choosing his defining win depends on what you value more. He definitely schooled Trinidad more decisively, I’ll give you that, but if you ask me, the Pavlik win is WAY more impressive. Trinidad was a lot smaller and Bhop was in his athletic prime. He demolished a Pavlik after a loss to Calzaghe, winning upset of the year as a 43 YEAR OLD. The most insane thing about Bernard is he basically has two hall of fame careers in one man, as you and I have illustrated here: he has one of the most dominant middleweight runs ever, but then he’s ALSO the oldest champion ever after what he accomplished at light heavyweight. He is unbelievable

Ive watched calzaghe get out timed and out smarted in both the jones and Hopkins fight, yall say he was out his prime years but joe never lost he definitely was still in his peak compared to jones nd Hopkins…joe also stayed over seas where jeff lacy had to come fight him…if you really think he could compare to a prime jones your delusional…before mayweather jones was the guy dominating boxing…if joe wanted to be considered great he would of had to go fight and beat jones at that time not after he’s been knocked out twice…Nigel benn himself said he was respectfully scared to fight jones but would still do it…don’t jump in mid way if you don’t know the full story behind it…calazaghe put his name the same bracket as jones and Hopkins as a all time great with these half credit victories nd i still think Hopkins beat him he literally slapped his way in hopes of winning on points while Hopkins hurt him multiple times jones is the one who dominated boxing for over a decade jumping weight classes he literally was the FACE of boxing calzaghe was never that

Joe was great no doubt, and this is just a boxing fans opinion! Joe beat some fantastic fighters and some legends too! But he did not beat the best fighters in their prime!! Although, to be fair Joe seemed to have been in his prime for 15 years! for most it is as short a 3-5 years. I also think he avoided Collin’s for a few years while he was in his prime, Collin’s just got old and retired! Pity. that would have been a war of intellect and physical talent. I don’t believe he would have beaten Roy if both meet in their “prime”….at any weight.
