I am a scientist and technologist by training, and I despise how people omit the unit (°F vs. °C) with a vengeance; sure, when you are familiar with the two scales, you can tell what it most likely is referring to, but even seasoned users may have problems with unfamiliar recipes in the region around the figure 200, because it's where breads and pies are baked in degrees centigrade, and it's where meats and some more custard- or pudding-like desserts are baked in degrees Fahrenheit, so if you are not sure where something is meant to be headed and especially if you don't understand the two scales, you can fuck things up. Also, because you are always supposed to mention what the unit actually is.

I mean, it's only fair. American cookbooks really do be like this, either asking me to buy bunch of premade stuff, or some esoteric stuff like corn syrup. Like, how do you even turn corn into syrup, and why? So we both suffer equally.
@laslw Жыл бұрын
@@legio1942 when it says to add things like peeled sliced apples or melted butter, it assumes you can follow those steps without us having them written down. We don't have pre-peeled and sliced apples, melted butter, etc. on our shelves. Corn syrup though, while yes is an odd ask, can be substituted by other things, as well as many other ingredients in American recipes.
@legio1942 Жыл бұрын
@@laslw Why is it an odd ask? Stores literally don't sell those. Also, I did not mean stuff like sliced apples or melted butter, I mean stuff like pre-made dough of specific brand and similar things, that I just can't get.
@laslw Жыл бұрын
@@legio1942 I'm agreeing with the corn syrup point. It's odd for cookbooks to assume europeans have access to corn syrup, keeblers pie crusts, or graham crackers. I do see some of the same things though, in European baked recipes. For example, every recipe for Speculaas I've seen said "just use your simple classic mold" like I just have a Speculaas mold sitting around. I'll have to really look for that in any shop I go to and even then, it'll be hard to find.
@laslw Жыл бұрын
@@legio1942 either way, those brand-specific asks, again, could be substituted. The reason for the brand ask is usually for convenience or because it has a signature taste, but at the end of the day, it's likely possible to do on your own.

The fact that he actually had a flute for the gag is amazing ngl Also the struggle of following US (or UK) recipes is real. When "cups" are used, good luck trying to figure out which cups they mean, because opinions on what that is in ml varies. Butter is an extra "screw you", be it "tablespoons" or STICKS OF BUTTER.
@Phosphor662 жыл бұрын
I feel like the only reason we ever use tablespoons for butter is because they are printed as lines on the wrapper of the sticks of butter we use. The whole system is just bizarre; even as a kid I wondered why butter was packaged that way. I still wonder. btw a stick of butter is about 113g, and a tablespoon of butter is about 14g.
@NeedleDrops2 жыл бұрын
To be fair a stick is a standard thing here, all companies that make butter here make it in 4 oz (about 115 grams if I remember right) "sticks," of which then the struggle becomes real. It's so acknowledged how bad it is that butter companies mark tbsp on the wrap. But there's 8 tablespoons in a stick according to the wrapper, so I'd use 14 grams. One cup is 8 US fluid ounces in volume, which is 30cc (29.5 something) each, so 240ml. Hope this helps :) (professional chef, and I have a magnet on my fridge at home with the conversions, because I really prefer metric)
@agitatorjr2 жыл бұрын
@@Phosphor66 butter didn't always come in prepackaged sticks. Scooping a spoon out of a container full of butter is something people have done for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Sticks have only been around for about 100 years.
@Nabesima2 жыл бұрын
@@NeedleDrops with the sticks it's pretty straightforward when I google at least, though I don't bake/cook by US recipes nearly often enough to remember it and have to look it up every time hahah. With cups however, there are at least 4 different "cups" ranging from 237 to 284 ml, with 240 and 250 being other popular options. 10 ml difference probably won't do anything terrible, but I like precision when baking, blin! :'D
